Yes: open-weight models have become much more competitive with closed models, but they have not caught up across the board. In Stanford HAI’s March 2026 Arena comparison, the top closed model led the top open-weight model by 49 points, or 3.4%. Other evaluations put the lag at roughly four to eight months, but those estimates measure different things. The useful answer depends on the task, benchmark and date—not on one universal gap number.
Are open-weight models catching up with closed models?
They are catching up in the broad sense that the distance from leading closed models has narrowed compared with earlier years. But the trend is not a straight line, and it does not mean open-weight models match closed ones on every capability.
Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index technical chapter says the gap briefly narrowed in 2024 and reopened in 2025. In its March 2026 Arena comparison, six of the top ten models were closed. Those results describe Arena rankings at that time, not every model or task.
How far behind are open models?
There is no single authoritative figure: the available estimates use different benchmarks, model samples and methods. Treat each number as an answer to a particular measurement question.

| Source and measure | Reported gap | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Stanford HAI, Arena, March 2026 | 49 points, or 3.4% | Claude Opus 4.6 scored 1,503 and the top open-weight model, GLM-5, scored 1,454. This is a score difference on Arena, not a general capability percentage. |
| Epoch AI, Epoch Capabilities Index (ECI), January 1–May 28, 2026 | Four-month average lag; eight ECI points, with a 90% confidence interval of 7 to 11 points | Epoch estimates the average time the most capable open-weight models lagged the closed frontier under its composite-index method. Using a stricter point-estimate criterion, Epoch says the lag would be six months. |
| UK AI Security Institute (AISI), estimates discussed in its Frontier AI Trends Report | Four months on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index; eight months on METR time-horizon benchmarks | AISI calls the eight-month estimate an upper bound. It notes that the two evaluations capture different capabilities, including performance on longer-horizon tasks. |
Epoch cautions that its estimate may understate the gap because open-weight models may perform less well on private benchmarks and its index requires adequate public benchmark coverage. AISI’s comparison also illustrates why a model can look closer on one evaluation than another. The figures should not be combined into a single definitive estimate.
Why does the gap vary by benchmark?
Benchmarks test different slices of capability. A broad index or head-to-head ranking cannot tell you whether a model is the better choice for your particular coding, reasoning, multilingual or long-running agent task.
- Task: Check whether the evaluation reflects what you need the model to do. Longer-horizon agent work may produce a different comparison from shorter tasks.
- Evaluation and date: Record the benchmark, model snapshot and test date. Results are snapshots that can shift when models or evaluation methods change.
- Score versus time lag: A difference in Arena points is not interchangeable with an estimate of how many months one group of models trails another.
- Benchmark reliability: Stanford HAI flags reliability and gaming concerns around widely used evaluations. A benchmark result is evidence about performance under that evaluation, not a guarantee of real-world performance.
AISI suggests that greater optimization for mainstream benchmark scores and weaker performance on longer-horizon agentic tasks may help explain differing estimates. It presents these as possible influences, not a settled explanation. Compute and data requirements, along with whether leading developers continue releasing open models, may also shape the trajectory; no smooth or inevitable convergence is established.

Open-weight means the model parameters are available to download. That can enable local execution, but it does not by itself mean the developer has released the training data, training code or a complete account of how the model was built. The precise meaning of “open source” is also discussed differently by researchers and organizations, so look at what materials a specific release actually provides.

James Landay, Denning Director of Stanford HAI, describes both the benefit and limitation: “Open weights are progress,” he said. “You can download the model, run it on your own machine, keep it out of someone else’s data pipeline. But you still can’t see how the thing was built, what it was trained on, or why it behaves the way it does. That’s not an open model. That’s open distribution.”
Can you run an open-weight model on your own computer?
Potentially, if the model’s license permits your intended use and your computer has suitable hardware. Downloadable weights make local execution possible, which may keep prompts and data out of a hosted provider’s pipeline. But hardware requirements vary by model; these comparisons do not establish the memory, GPU or configuration needed for any particular release. Check the individual model’s documentation and license before choosing a setup.
What access changes—and what it does not
Local execution gives users more control over where inference runs, and released weights can allow broader experimentation and scrutiny. That does not automatically make a model fully transparent, nor does it ensure that every user applies safeguards or installs later updates.

It discusses proposed tamper-resistance and safeguard techniques, while noting that harmful fine-tuning can disable safeguards and that robust evaluation against real-world attacks remains challenging. These are governance tradeoffs, not proof that either open-weight or closed models are categorically safer.

How to choose between an open-weight and a closed model
Start with the job you need done rather than the headline ranking. Compare models on the relevant task, then weigh the deployment and governance differences that affect your use.
- Define the task. Identify the capability you need—such as coding, multilingual work or agent tasks—and look for evaluations that test it.
- Check the evidence date and method. Note the benchmark and model snapshot, and distinguish a benchmark score from a time-to-match estimate.
- Confirm deployment fit. For a downloadable model, verify its license and model-specific hardware requirements. For a hosted model, consider that it runs through the provider’s service.
- Decide how much transparency and control matter. Check whether weights, code, training data and details of the training process are available; do not infer the latter from weight access alone.
- Account for updates and safeguards. Consider who can update the system and how safeguards are applied in your deployment.
What the latest milestones do—and do not—show
The International AI Safety Report 2026 records several developments that illustrate how quickly the field has moved: DeepSeek-R1 performed comparably to OpenAI o1 on a number of benchmarks in January 2025; Alibaba’s Qwen models held the top open-weight position on Chatbot Arena as of August 2025; OpenAI released gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b in August 2025; and Meta continued releasing Llama models. These are historical milestones reported in that publication, not current rankings.
The practical conclusion is that open-weight models are credible contenders, but a claim that they are now “as good” as closed models needs a task, evaluation and date attached. The benchmark result that matters most is the one that reflects your intended use.
