Open-ear earbuds are often good for staying aware and can handle calls in quiet or moderately busy places, but they are not a dependable all-purpose choice for loud environments. Their microphones may separate your voice from background sound, while the open design leaves traffic, conversations, machinery and wind audible to you. If your priority is hearing a call clearly in a noisy place, sealed earbuds with active noise cancellation are usually the better fit; choose open-ear models when awareness, comfort and an unobstructed ear are more important.
Two different questions are hidden in “good for calls”
A call has two audio paths, and open-ear earbuds treat them differently:
- Outgoing speech: the microphones must capture your voice and suppress competing sound for the person on the other end.
- Incoming speech: the speakers must make the other person understandable to you while the surrounding world remains audible.
Beamforming microphones and digital noise processing can improve the first path. They do not turn an open ear into a quiet room. A caller may report that your voice is clear while you struggle to hear that caller over a café, station announcement or treadmill fan. This is why a microphone rating and a noise-isolation rating should never be treated as the same thing.

What open-ear design changes in a noisy place
Open-ear earbuds sit beside or just outside the ear canal instead of sealing it. That design supports awareness and can feel less occluding during long listening sessions, but it provides little passive isolation. RTINGS found almost no attenuation of outside frequencies on the Shokz OpenFit Air and almost zero noise isolation on the Bose Ultra Open. Bose says its Ultra Open Earbuds “don’t block out the world or have noise cancellation.”

Shokz makes the same trade-off explicit in its comparison of the OpenFit Pro, OpenFit Air and OpenFit 2+: “None of the three isolates you like sealed earbuds do, and that’s deliberate because staying aware of your surroundings is the point of open-ear audio.” That is a description of the design goal, not evidence that every open model performs identically.
Steady background noise and wind create different problems. A café or office raises the sound floor that competes with the incoming call. Wind creates bursts and turbulence at the microphones, often overwhelming speech-processing algorithms. Running, cycling or walking quickly can therefore produce worse call results than standing in the same location.

| Model | Outgoing-call evidence | What the wearer hears | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shokz OpenFit Pro | Shokz lists three microphones, AI voice processing and wind control. It claims up to 99.4% background-noise reduction in internal laboratory simulations. | Open-ear design; no independent isolation figure stated in the reviewed evidence. | The 99.4% figure is a manufacturer simulation result, and Shokz says real-world performance can vary. No independent comparative call test of this model was published. |
| Shokz OpenFit 2+ | Four beamforming microphones and AI noise processing are listed by Shokz. TechRadar reports clear calls in suitable conditions. | Open fit leaves environmental sound present. | TechRadar also reports that clarity can suffer on windy days or while running. |
| Shokz OpenFit Air | RTINGS found the voice intelligible and satisfactorily separated from background noise in a moderately busy environment. | RTINGS measured almost no attenuation of outside frequencies. | Good microphone intelligibility in that test does not mean the wearer will hear a call comfortably in a loud location. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (original) | RTINGS describes microphone performance as decent. | Bose confirms there is no noise cancellation and that the wearer remains open to the world. | These findings concern the original product; do not substitute them for results from the second generation. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds 2nd Gen | SoundGuys’ October 2026 review found its ideal-condition sample clear, but office and street noise processing also muffled speech. The windy sample was the worst. | The open design continues to expose the wearer to surrounding sound. | The 2nd Gen results are separate from the original Ultra Open measurements and should not be generalized to every open model. |
The pattern is consistent: open earbuds can deliver usable speech capture, yet performance falls as noise becomes louder, more variable or windier. A product with a strong microphone can still be frustrating when you need to understand the incoming call.
What the noise-reduction percentages do—and do not—mean
Shokz reports “up to 99.4%” background-noise reduction for OpenFit Pro, based on internal laboratory simulations, and “up to 96.5%” environmental-noise filtering for OpenFit Air in its comparison information. Both are manufacturer-reported laboratory figures. They are not independent head-to-head call measurements, and they do not establish intelligibility in every street, office or weather condition. “Up to” also describes a best-case result rather than a guaranteed level in your next call.
Use these numbers to understand the processing target, not to predict what a caller will hear. A real evaluation should include a voice recording or call in the environment where you actually work or travel.

Match the earbuds to the place you use them
Quiet room or home office
Open-ear earbuds are usually an easy fit here. You can hear your own room, doorbell or a colleague while the microphones have relatively little competing sound. Check that the person on the other end hears consonants clearly, not merely that your own voice sounds loud in a local sidetone preview.

Moderately busy office or café
Results become more dependent on microphone tuning and speaker volume. The OpenFit Air example from RTINGS shows that intelligible outgoing speech is possible in a moderately busy setting, but its near-zero isolation means you still hear every nearby conversation. If you regularly take long calls, test whether raising volume to overcome the room makes listening tiring.
Street, station or public transport
Intermittent announcements, engines and passing voices compete with incoming speech. Open earbuds preserve awareness of those sounds, which can be useful for safety, but that same awareness reduces the clarity margin for the call. A sealed, noise-cancelling design is more appropriate when understanding every word matters more than hearing the environment.

Wind, running and cycling
Wind deserves its own test. Movement changes the angle and pressure of air at the microphones, and gusts are not equivalent to steady room noise. OpenFit 2+ call clarity has been reported to suffer on windy days or while running, while SoundGuys found the windy sample for the Ultra Open 2nd Gen particularly poor. Shokz advertises wind control on OpenFit Pro, but its 99.4% claim remains an internal simulation result; it is not a promise of clear speech in every gust. Test while moving at the speed and route you actually use.
What to compare before buying
Marketing labels such as “AI” or “clear calls” are less useful than recordings made in relevant conditions. Evaluate these factors:

- Sound reaching your ear: open designs intentionally provide little isolation. Decide whether you can understand speech with your normal background noise.
- Fit style and stability: ear-hook and clip-on shapes place different pressure points. Walk, turn your head and speak before committing to long calls.
- Controls: verify mute, answer/end and volume controls on the phone and in the earbud app. A convenient physical control is valuable when you cannot reach your phone.
- Multipoint behavior: if you switch between a computer and phone, confirm that call handoff and microphone selection work with your devices.
- Battery and charging: check the maker’s stated runtime for your call pattern and whether the case can cover a full workday. Runtime and current price vary by region, firmware and retailer, so confirm them at purchase.
A practical call test you can run in 10 minutes
- Pair the earbuds with your phone and install any required firmware or companion-app update.
- Record 20–30 seconds in a quiet room. Speak at your normal call volume and include names and numbers with hard consonants.
- Repeat in a café-like room, beside a road or in another moderately busy location. Keep the phone position and speaking distance the same.
- Repeat while walking, then add a fan or natural wind if that reflects your use. Do not infer outdoor performance from the quiet recording.
- Have someone listen without telling them which sample is which. Ask them to note missing words, muffled syllables and whether the background is distracting.
- On the same route, listen to an incoming call or spoken audio. Decide whether you can follow complete sentences without repeatedly asking for repeats.
- Test mute, answer/end, device switching and reconnection before relying on the earbuds for work calls.
This procedure separates microphone performance from your ability to hear the call, the two outcomes that are often collapsed into one product rating.

When sealed earbuds with noise cancellation are the better choice
Choose a sealed in-ear or over-ear design with active noise cancellation when your primary requirement is understanding speech in aircraft cabins, busy stations, loud gyms, open-plan offices or traffic-heavy streets. A seal and cancellation system reduce the sound arriving at your ears, giving incoming speech more headroom. The trade-off is reduced awareness of nearby people and vehicles, plus a less open physical feel.
Open-ear earbuds make more sense when you need to monitor announcements, communicate with coworkers without removing an earbud, or remain aware while walking in a moderately noisy area. They are a compromise: better environmental awareness than isolation-focused designs, with call quality that depends strongly on microphones, fit and wind.
Quick decision guide
| Your priority | More suitable design | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Hear traffic, coworkers or announcements while listening | Open-ear earbuds | The open fit intentionally leaves environmental sound audible. |
| Make understandable calls in a quiet or moderately busy room | Open-ear or sealed earbuds, based on test results | Open models can provide intelligible outgoing speech when background noise is limited. |
| Understand every word in loud or unpredictable noise | Sealed earbuds with active noise cancellation | Open designs provide almost no isolation for the wearer. |
| Run or walk in changing wind while taking calls | Whichever model passes a moving, windy call test | Wind can defeat otherwise effective speech processing; manufacturer claims alone are insufficient. |
Bottom line
Open-ear earbuds are good for calls when your surroundings are quiet to moderately busy and you value awareness. They are not a reliable solution for hearing calls in loud places because the outside sound remains at your ears, and wind can degrade the microphones. Judge the exact model with call samples from your typical office, street or route. If clear incoming audio in substantial noise is the non-negotiable requirement, start with sealed noise-cancelling earbuds instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a manufacturer’s noise-reduction percentage predict how my caller will hear me?
No. The OpenFit Pro figure of up to 99.4% and OpenFit Air figure of up to 96.5% are Shokz laboratory claims. They do not replace an independent recording or call test in your environment.
Are the original Bose Ultra Open and Ultra Open 2nd Gen call results interchangeable?
No. RTINGS’ “decent” microphone assessment applies to the original product, while SoundGuys’ October 2026 review found office, street and especially windy call problems on the 2nd Gen. Treat them as separate test results.
What is the fastest way to decide whether open earbuds will work for my calls?
Make matched recordings in a quiet room, a moderately busy place and moving air, then have another person judge missing or muffled words. Also listen to an incoming call in the same locations.
