In the United States, an online-only bank is not inherently less safe than a branch-based bank for deposit insurance. Eligible deposits at either type of institution are generally covered by the FDIC up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The key questions are which bank legally holds your money, whether your particular account is an insured deposit, and whether the account’s terms and access fit your needs. Deposit insurance protects against the failure of an insured bank; it does not guarantee protection from fraud, account-access problems, or losses on investments.
What does “safer” mean when comparing banks?
“Online” and “traditional” describe how customers interact with an institution, not the kind of protection attached to a deposit. A branch-based bank and an online-only bank can both offer FDIC-insured deposit accounts. For covered deposits, the decisive factors are the identity of the insured bank, the account and ownership category, and your total deposits at that bank—not whether you can visit a teller. The FDIC explains that digital banking customers can receive deposit insurance when their deposits are held at an FDIC-insured bank. FDIC guidance on digital banking
That answer is narrower than saying the two formats are equally safe in every respect. Deposit insurance addresses a specific risk: an insured bank failing. It does not establish that online and branch-based banks have equal cybersecurity, customer-service quality, fraud prevention, operational resilience, or recovery procedures. The official guidance cited here does not provide comparative incident rates or a ranking showing that either format is safer overall.

- Coverage amount: Add up balances at the same insured bank within each applicable ownership category.
- Fraud and account access: Review the institution’s procedures and use sound security practices; FDIC insurance is not transaction insurance.
- Practical access: Consider cash deposits, ATMs, in-person help, transfer limits, and the support channels available when you need them.
What does FDIC insurance cover—and what does it not?
The standard limit depends on depositor, bank, and ownership category
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per account ownership category. It is not a separate $250,000 limit for every account number. Multiple accounts in the same ownership category at the same bank may be combined when coverage is determined. Different ownership categories may receive separate coverage under the applicable rules. The details can depend on how accounts are titled and who owns them, so do not estimate coverage by simply looking at each account’s balance. FDIC explanation of deposit insurance

If your balances, co-owners, beneficiaries, trust accounts, business accounts, or intermediary arrangements make the calculation less straightforward, use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) or contact the FDIC for guidance. Insurance follows qualifying deposits, not every product in a banking app
FDIC insurance applies to qualifying deposits if an insured bank fails. It does not cover non-deposit investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or crypto assets. Nor should you assume that every balance displayed in a bank’s or financial app’s interface is an insured deposit. Check the product documents and identify the institution legally responsible for holding the funds. FDIC coverage explanation
A credit union is not covered by FDIC insurance. If you are considering one, check its status and applicable coverage through the credit-union insurance system rather than treating the FDIC limit as its coverage rule.

How do you verify who actually holds your money?
Check the bank’s identity independently
Use the FDIC’s BankFind tool to search for the institution by its legal name or website, and make sure the result matches the entity named in the account agreement. Start from a known, correct web address rather than a link in an unexpected email or message: scammers can imitate bank websites and misuse FDIC language or logos. The FDIC discusses this risk in its guidance on scammers and fake banks.
Then confirm that the specific product you plan to open is a deposit account at that insured bank. A brokerage balance, investment product, or app balance should not be treated as an insured bank deposit merely because it is accessible through an account dashboard or carries a banking-related label.
Ask direct questions when a nonbank app is involved
A financial technology company or app is not itself FDIC-insured just because it offers payment or banking-like features. If the provider says it places funds with a partner bank, find out which bank receives the money and read the provider’s agreement and disclosures. The FDIC advises consumers to understand when and how funds are deposited and how coverage applies to the account arrangement. FDIC guidance on banking through third-party apps

- What is the legal name of the bank holding the funds?
- Is the balance in an insured deposit account, or is it another kind of product?
- How and when is money transferred to the partner bank, and how is it credited to your account?
- What do the account agreement and disclosures say about the arrangement and your access to funds?
Verify the named bank through the FDIC independently instead of relying only on a provider’s branding or insurance claim. Do not assume that a partner-bank relationship automatically settles how coverage applies to your particular balance or account structure. What should you compare before choosing an account?
Compare the actual account and service—not a broad label such as “online bank.” Read the deposit agreement, fee schedule, and product disclosures, and check current terms directly with each institution. Terms can change, and an advertised rate or offer may have conditions or an expiration date.
Costs, rates, and conditions
- Fees: Check monthly maintenance, overdraft, ATM, wire, and other transaction fees that could apply to your normal activity.
- Interest: Compare the rate, minimum balance, and conditions. Find out whether an advertised rate is promotional and when it expires.
- Overdraft terms: Review how overdrafts are handled, what protection options exist, and what charges may apply. The OCC recommends reviewing account agreements and asking the bank about terms such as overdraft protection. OCC guidance on depository services
- Offer requirements: Check the eligibility rules and any account activity, balance, or timing requirements attached to a promotion.
The FDIC advises weighing ongoing benefits and costs instead of allowing a short-lived offer to decide the move. Its March 2024 switching guidance says: “Do not let short-term promotional offers be the only factor in your decision making.” FDIC guidance on moving to another bank

Access and day-to-day features
- Cash: If you receive or use cash, ask whether deposits are accepted and where. Online-only institutions may not accept cash deposits, while a branch-based option may offer in-person teller service.
- ATMs: Check the ATM network, possible surcharges, and any reimbursement rules rather than assuming access is free.
- Payments and transfers: Review check-deposit rules, transfer timing and limits, bill pay, and how recurring payments are managed.
- Human support: Confirm service hours and available channels. Decide whether in-person assistance matters for the kinds of problems you might need to resolve.
- Errors and suspected fraud: Find the current instructions for reporting an unauthorized transaction, disputing an error, or regaining account access. Obtain the procedures from the institution rather than assuming they are the same everywhere.
The FDIC notes that online and branch-based arrangements can differ in services such as in-person help and cash access; an online-only institution may not provide a physical location. Check the particular bank’s actual features and fees. FDIC overview of digital banking
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you reduce account-security risks?
Insurance and cybersecurity address different risks. FDIC insurance does not reimburse every scam, stolen credential, payment error, or inability to sign in. For customer-side security, the FDIC advises using strong credentials, keeping protective software updated, and connecting through a trusted, secure network when banking. FDIC customer cybersecurity guide
- Use the bank’s genuine website or official app; avoid links in unexpected messages when signing in.
- Do not disclose credentials in response to an unexpected call, message, or request.
- Keep the devices and protective software you use for banking updated, and use a trusted connection.
- Before opening the account, locate the institution’s official contact and fraud-reporting procedures so you know where to turn if access or a transaction is in doubt.
These measures help protect your devices and behavior. They do not prove that online-only or branch-based banks have better cybersecurity, and the available official guidance does not establish a winner between the two formats.

How should you switch without disrupting deposits or bills?
Keep the old account available during the transition. Moving income, payments, and pending transactions in stages makes it easier to spot a failed deposit or bill payment before the old account is closed. The FDIC recommends contacting customer-service representatives at both institutions to understand timing and avoid unnecessary fees or hassles. FDIC switching checklist
- Open the new account and confirm access. Complete the institution’s identity and account-opening steps, review the disclosures, and make sure you can sign in and use the account before redirecting income or moving the full balance.
- Check the costs and transition rules. Ask both institutions about transfer timing, applicable fees, and any conditions for closing the old account. Review the new account’s fee schedule and agreement.
- Move income and recurring payments deliberately. Update direct-deposit instructions with the payer. Move automatic withdrawals and update bill-pay instructions. If you use the old bank’s bill-pay service, the FDIC advises canceling those payments there and enrolling them through the new bank.
- Wait for unsettled activity to clear. Check for pending checks, card transactions, transfers, and automatic debits. Confirm expected timing with both banks rather than assuming a transfer or payment will complete immediately.
- Keep enough money in the old account. Leave funds to cover unsettled activity and remaining scheduled payments while you verify that everything is working.
- Confirm the new arrangement before closing the old account. Check that income is arriving and recurring bills are being paid as intended. Then confirm with the old bank that the account can be closed without a fee or other consequence.
Record which payers and billers you have updated, along with the dates you expect the changes to take effect. If a payment is due during the transition, check its status directly rather than assuming a new instruction has already replaced the old one.
Which option should you choose?
Make a side-by-side comparison using the bank and account you would actually use. The FDIC’s guidance supports no universal ranking of online-only versus branch-based banks for cybersecurity or overall safety. Instead, weigh the points that affect your situation:

- Legal bank identity and FDIC-insured status.
- Whether the specific account is an insured deposit and how its ownership category affects your total coverage.
- Fees, rates, minimums, and conditions that apply to your expected use.
- Cash-deposit options, ATM access, in-person services, and customer-support channels.
- Digital features, payment and transfer logistics, and procedures for handling errors or suspected fraud.
- For an app or other nonbank provider, the named partner bank and the terms explaining how funds are held and credited.
Choose the account whose verified protections, terms, and access match your needs. The word “online” alone does not answer whether your money is insured or whether the account will be practical for you.
