Moonquakes are usually a low immediate danger to astronauts on a short visit, but they are a serious design issue for long-lived lunar infrastructure. The strongest shallow events detected by Apollo were roughly magnitude 5 to 5.5, and lunar shaking can continue for hours. That combination could damage a habitat, tip a vehicle, destabilize a slope, disturb stored propellant or interrupt operations even when it would not seriously threaten a crew during a mission lasting only a few days.

Risk depends on more than magnitude. Distance from an active thrust fault, the stability of local slopes and regolith, how long people and equipment remain exposed, and whether a site has continuous seismic monitoring all matter. The sparse Apollo network cannot yet provide a precise damaging-event probability for a particular Artemis landing area.

What is a moonquake?

A moonquake is seismic activity on the Moon: energy released through the lunar interior or surface that produces ground motion. NASA groups lunar seismic signals into four broad classes.

Type Cause Why it matters to missions
Deep moonquakes Stress from Earth’s tides acting hundreds of kilometres below the surface. They can recur in patterns linked to the Moon’s orbit and help reveal its interior, but they are generally less threatening to surface hardware than shallow fault events.
Shallow moonquakes Sudden slip on thrust faults formed as the Moon’s interior cools and the crust contracts. These are the principal concern for habitats, vehicles, slopes and other surface infrastructure because they occur close to the ground people use.
Thermal moonquakes Expansion and contraction caused by the Moon’s extreme temperature swing between lunar day and night. Repeated smaller signals can reveal how the surface responds to thermal cycling and may contribute to fatigue in exposed equipment.
Meteoroid impacts Impacts inject a sudden pulse of seismic energy. They are difficult to predict at a particular moment and create a separate impact hazard for people, equipment and pressurized structures.

The Moon has no Earth-like system of moving tectonic plates. Its interior is still cooling, however, so the crust slowly contracts. NASA estimates that the lunar diameter has decreased by about 150 feet (50 meters) over the last several hundred million years. That contraction wrinkles the crust into thrust faults; when stress overcomes friction, a fault can slip and produce a shallow moonquake.

Moonquakes also behave differently from ordinary earthquakes. The Moon’s dry, fractured crust and regolith allow seismic energy to reverberate, so NASA states that a moonquake can last for hours. Duration is crucial: a short burst may be tolerable for a visiting crew, while many hours of vibration can fatigue joints, loosen connections, shift equipment or destabilize a vehicle that must remain ready for months.

How strong can a moonquake be?

There is no single universally stated maximum in NASA’s public explainers. NASA’s 2025 safety discussion describes rare, most-powerful shallow moonquakes at about magnitude 5.0. A separate NASA Science explainer describes contraction-related shallow events reaching up to magnitude 5.5 and lasting more than 10 minutes. These are rounded figures from different explainers, not a precise engineering limit.

A magnitude near 5 is substantially weaker than a magnitude-7-or-higher terrestrial earthquake when comparing the magnitude scale. That comparison does not make lunar shaking harmless. Lunar structures are not protected by an atmosphere, are often placed on slopes or loose regolith, and may need to function without immediate repair crews. Long-duration vibration can matter more than a single peak number.

  • For a few-day crew visit: NASA’s current safety framing says a rare shallow event around magnitude 5.0 would pose little risk to astronauts during the short exposure window, provided the landing area and vehicle are sound.
  • For a surface habitat: Repeated or prolonged shaking could damage seals, power systems, life-support connections, antennas and scientific instruments.
  • For a launch or ascent vehicle: A vehicle resting on unstable ground could shift, tip or suffer damage that is not discovered until an emergency departure is required.
  • For a slope or crater rim: Even light shaking can trigger a landslide where the regolith is weak or over-steepened.

Are moonquakes dangerous to astronauts?

The answer depends primarily on mission duration and location. A crew landing for several days has a much smaller exposure window than a permanent or semi-permanent base. The same event that is unlikely to endanger people inside a well-designed lander during a short sortie could become a major maintenance or survival problem for a habitat occupied continuously.

Immediate crew hazards

During shaking, astronauts could fall while walking outside, lose contact with a rover, or be struck by unsecured equipment. A rover parked on a slope could move unexpectedly. Dust and small surface failures could reduce visibility or damage seals. These are operational hazards even when the main pressure vessel remains intact.

Delayed hazards after the shaking stops

The more consequential failure may be discovered later: a cracked connector, misaligned antenna, damaged solar array, shifted propellant line or weakened landing pad. A crew that has lost power, communications or a safe ascent vehicle may face danger long after the seismic signal ends.

Why proximity matters

Thomas Watters, senior scientist emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, summarized the site effect this way: “The hazard probability goes up depending on how close your infrastructure is to an active fault.” A moderate event directly beneath a habitat can be more consequential than a stronger event many kilometres away, depending on depth, direction of slip and local ground conditions.

Could a moonquake destroy a lunar base?

It is physically possible for a shallow moonquake to cause catastrophic damage to a poorly sited or lightly engineered base, but current public data do not support assigning a precise destruction probability to any proposed site. The principal failure pathways are known even though their frequency is not.

Structural and pressure failures

Rigid modules can experience differential movement where they connect. Repeated long-duration vibration may fatigue pressure shells, hatches, seals, buried utilities and docking interfaces. A base assembled from several elements needs joints and flexible service loops that tolerate relative motion rather than transferring every load into a brittle connection.

Ground and slope failure

A foundation can settle unevenly, while a crater wall or ridge can shed material. NASA modeling found that portions of candidate Artemis III regions and permanently shadowed slopes could be susceptible to landslides from even light seismic shaking. A habitat does not need to be struck directly by a fault to be threatened; it can be buried, isolated or blocked by a nearby slide.

Vehicle and logistics losses

Landing pads, cranes, rovers, oxygen tanks and stored cargo may be damaged or displaced. A tipped vehicle is especially serious if it is the crew’s only pressurized rover or ascent option. Long-duration plans therefore have to treat seismic protection as a logistics and redundancy problem, not only a building-strength problem.

What does Apollo tell us about lunar seismic risk?

Four Apollo seismic stations operated from 1969 through 1977, concentrated on the near side. NASA’s 2018 analysis identified 28 shallow moonquakes in that record, with estimated magnitudes of about 2 to 5. Relocation work placed eight of them within 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) of visible faults. NASA’s historical summary also records more than 1,700 meteoroid impacts; the later Apollo stations continued transmitting until September 1977.

Those observations established that the Moon is active, but they do not provide a complete global hazard map. Four stations cannot reliably locate every event on the far side or determine how often damaging shallow quakes recur near a proposed south-polar base. The network’s near-side concentration also leaves uncertainty about whether the apparent scarcity of far-side events reflects geology or limited detection.

Are Artemis landing sites at risk?

Potential Artemis sites, particularly near the lunar south pole, combine scientific value and difficult terrain. Permanently shadowed regions preserve volatile materials but can include steep crater walls, irregular illumination and poorly characterized regolith. NASA’s slope modeling indicates that some candidate Artemis III areas and permanently shadowed slopes could fail under relatively light shaking.

That finding does not mean every Artemis landing site is unsafe or that a mission has a known probability of being hit by a destructive quake. It means site selection must combine seismic information with terrain analysis. A flat location farther from mapped thrust faults may be preferable to a scientifically attractive but unstable slope. Conversely, a site near a fault is not automatically disqualified if structures, pads and evacuation routes are designed for the local hazard.

How new instruments will reduce uncertainty

Farside Seismic Suite

NASA’s Farside Seismic Suite is planned for delivery to Schrödinger basin by a Commercial Lunar Payload Services lander. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the package is designed to operate for at least 4½ months, measure far-side moonquakes and meteoroid impacts, and investigate why Apollo detected so little far-side activity.

The payload combines a CNES very-broadband sensor with a short-period sensor built by Kinemetrics and university partners. Data from the far side should improve event locations, estimates of seismic energy and models of how signals travel through the Moon.

Lunar Environment Monitoring Station

NASA describes the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station as a suitcase-sized station for continuous monitoring of moonquakes and meteorite impacts near the south pole. In a 2026 update, NASA reported that construction was complete and the instrument was awaiting assignment to an Artemis mission. A station at the south pole would provide measurements where future crews and infrastructure may actually operate, rather than relying only on Apollo-era observations.

Renee Weber, a NASA Marshall Space Flight Center co-author of the south-polar hazard work, said: “To better understand the seismic hazard posed to future human activities on the Moon, we need new seismic data, not just at the South Pole, but globally.”

How mission planners should compare lunar sites

  1. Distance to mapped thrust faults: Identify visible and inferred faults, then model how shaking decreases with distance and how fault orientation could direct movement.
  2. Slope and regolith stability: Analyze crater walls, ridges, loose deposits and permanently shadowed slopes for settlement or landslide potential under low-level shaking.
  3. Mission duration: Separate a short sortie, a months-long expedition and a continuously occupied base. Exposure grows with time, as does the chance that a quake coincides with an outdoor task or critical operation.
  4. Structural sensitivity: Evaluate habitats, power systems, antennas, landing pads, rovers, stored propellant and ascent vehicles for long-duration vibration, not just peak acceleration.
  5. Local monitoring: Prefer sites with continuous seismic instruments and communications that can provide warnings, event characterization and post-event inspection data.
  6. Other environmental exposure: Include meteoroid impacts, thermal cycling, dust, illumination limits and the ability to reach a shelter or alternate vehicle.

This framework avoids treating an earthquake-style magnitude as a complete risk score. Two sites with the same expected magnitude can have very different consequences if one is flat and redundant while the other is on a steep, fractured slope with a single ascent vehicle.

How a lunar base can reduce seismic risk

Choose and prepare the ground

Map faults and slopes before committing to permanent construction. Use high-resolution topography, radar, rover measurements and seismic surveys to identify weak layers. Place habitats on broad, stable terrain; keep launch vehicles, propellant and critical power equipment away from likely runout paths.

Design for movement and inspection

Use flexible utility loops, compliant joints, anchored equipment and vibration-tolerant mounts. Separate critical systems so one damaged module does not depressurize the entire base. Install sensors that can detect tilt, strain, pressure loss and electrical faults immediately after a seismic event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect vehicles and escape options

Secure rovers and cranes against sliding, provide stable parking surfaces and keep more than one route to shelter or an ascent vehicle. A vehicle should be inspected after a significant event before it is treated as flight-ready.

Plan operations around alerts

Continuous stations can identify an event and support a pause in surface activity. Crews can suspend extravehicular work, move away from unstable slopes, secure loose equipment and perform a structured inspection before resuming operations. Monitoring cannot predict every quake, but it can reduce exposure during and after one.

What remains unknown

Scientists still lack a globally sampled, long-duration record of shallow moonquakes. The Apollo network was sparse, near-side focused and operational for eight years, so recurrence estimates near individual Artemis sites remain uncertain. Public NASA material does not establish a precise probability that a particular landing zone will experience a damaging event, nor does it define one exact maximum magnitude for all contraction-related quakes.

New far-side and south-polar measurements should improve fault maps, event recurrence estimates and slope-stability models. Until those data exist, responsible mission planning treats moonquakes as a manageable but location-dependent hazard: low immediate risk for a carefully planned short visit, and a central engineering constraint for infrastructure intended to last years.
