Yes—Milwaukee’s compact M18 tools are powerful enough for most routine DIY drilling, fastening, furniture, shelving, cabinetry and repair work. The important qualification is tool type: a compact drill/driver is not a substitute for a hammer drill in masonry or an impact driver when you repeatedly drive large or stubborn fasteners. Choose by material, hole or fastener size, workload duration and battery platform rather than by the word “compact.”

What “powerful enough” means for a DIY tool

Power is not one number. For a cordless tool, the useful combination includes torque for turning a fastener or bit, speed for drilling efficiently, the correct chuck or driver interface, battery capacity, control at the trigger and protection against overload. A tool can have a high published torque figure yet be the wrong choice for a particular material or bit.

Milwaukee’s ratings are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. They establish the intended capability of each model, but they do not guarantee a particular hole count, runtime or driving result. Actual performance varies with bit sharpness, wood density, masonry hardness, fastener size, operator technique and battery condition.

When the 3601-20 compact drill/driver is enough

Furniture and flat-pack assembly

Assembly work usually involves pilot holes, moderate screws and a need for precise control rather than maximum force. The 3601-20’s two-speed range lets you use a slower setting for controlled screw driving and a faster setting for drilling. Its clutch can be set to stop driving when the screw reaches the desired depth, reducing stripped heads and crushed particleboard.

Shelves, cabinets and trim

Installing shelf standards, cabinet hardware, curtain brackets and trim fasteners is a strong use case for a compact drill/driver. Its short body is easier to position inside a cabinet or between joists, and the lower bare-tool weight helps when the work is above shoulder height. Use a pilot hole sized for the screw and the material; forcing a large bit through a dense board is a different workload from driving a small cabinet screw.

Household repairs

Door-hardware replacement, furniture repair, hanging hooks and drilling ordinary wood or thin metal fall within the manufacturer’s stated range of drilling and fastening applications. A quality bit matters as much as the motor: a dull bit creates heat and drag, making a capable compact tool appear weak.

Where it starts to be the wrong choice

Large hole saws, long structural screws, continuous drilling in thick stock and repeated heavy-metal work place more demand on gearing, battery capacity and heat management. The published compact specifications do not establish runtime or sustained-load performance for those jobs. If that describes your project, compare a larger or higher-output model against the exact bit diameter, fastener length and expected cycle time instead of assuming the compact model will deliver the same result.

For concrete and masonry, choose the hammer-drill category

A standard drill/driver rotates a bit; a hammer drill adds a percussive action that helps a masonry bit break through mineral material. Milwaukee’s compact 3602-22CT is therefore the relevant comparison when your project includes concrete, brick or block. It is listed with a similar torque and speed envelope to the compact drill/driver, but the hammer mechanism changes its suitability for masonry.

“Masonry capable” is not a promise that every hole is equally easy. Check four variables before starting:

  • Substrate: soft brick and light block are less demanding than dense reinforced concrete.
  • Hole diameter and depth: a small anchor hole is a different task from a deep passage for pipe or conduit.
  • Bit type: use a sharp masonry bit appropriate to the material and chuck.
  • Repetition: a few occasional holes may suit a compact hammer drill; dozens of deep holes can justify a larger rotary hammer or other specialized tool.

Use the hammer setting only with bits designed for it, keep the tool square to the surface and clear dust from the hole as appropriate for the bit instructions. Stop if the tool overheats, binds or encounters suspected reinforcement; forcing it can damage the bit, battery or gearbox.

When an impact driver is the better fastening tool

An impact driver uses a quick-change hex interface and pulsed impact action. That makes it useful for repeated driving, long screws, lag-style fasteners and situations where a conventional drill chuck would require more user force to prevent cam-out. In Milwaukee’s 3693-22CX compact combo, the impact driver is listed at 1,700 in-lb peak torque and a short 4.4-inch length.

That rating should be read as a category and model specification, not as the force every fastener will receive. Use the lowest effective speed, maintain firm axial pressure and select a bit that fits the fastener precisely. Impact-rated bits are appropriate for impact use; ordinary bits can fracture under repeated impacts.

A combo is practical when one project list includes both drilling and substantial fastening. If your work is mostly pilot holes and small screws, buying an impact driver adds capability but also adds another tool, battery and storage requirement. Match the purchase to how often you encounter demanding fasteners rather than to a peak number alone.

Bare tool, kit and battery considerations

The 3601-20 listing is a bare tool. It does not include a battery or charger, so its usefulness depends on already owning compatible M18 equipment or budgeting for those items separately.

The 3601-22CT kit is listed with two CP2.0 batteries, an M18/M12 multi-voltage charger and a contractor bag. Milwaukee lists the kit at 3.2 pounds with battery. That weight is the more relevant figure when judging overhead fatigue, while the bare-tool weight is useful only for comparing tool bodies.

Existing M18 owners should compare the bare tool with the value of the kit contents they actually need. A first-time buyer should account for the complete system: tool, batteries, charger and bits. Two smaller batteries can be convenient for alternating work and charging, while a higher-capacity battery may change balance and runtime. The supplied specifications do not establish a universal runtime advantage for one battery size, so treat runtime as workload-dependent.

M12 versus M18: avoid blanket power claims

Milwaukee sells both M12 and M18 families, but the available official overview does not provide directly comparable detailed output specifications for the platforms. It is not defensible to say that every M18 tool is more powerful than every M12 tool, or to rank the platforms without naming exact models and battery configurations.

For a real choice, compare the specific tool type and model, published torque and speed, dimensions with battery attached, chuck or driver interface, and the batteries you already own. A compact M12 tool may be the better ergonomic choice for light work in a cabinet, while a particular M18 model may offer more headroom for larger bits. The platform label alone does not answer the project question.

A project-based decision framework

Your task Most relevant choice Why Check before buying
Small holes and ordinary screws in wood, plastic or light metal Compact drill/driver Chuck accepts common bits and clutch provides fastening control Bit diameter, material thickness and battery availability
Occasional brick, block or concrete anchor holes Compact hammer drill Percussion assists masonry drilling Substrate, hole size, depth and number of holes
Many long screws, lag-style fasteners or structural connectors Impact driver, often alongside a drill Impact action reduces user effort during repeated driving Fastener length, bit quality and whether impact-rated accessories are available
Large holes or prolonged heavy work Compare a larger, higher-output tool Compact specifications alone do not establish sustained-load capability Expected cycle time, heat, battery capacity and manufacturer duty guidance

How to get the most from a compact tool

  1. Define the job: write down the material, hole diameter and depth, fastener type and approximate quantity. “Drill a hole” is not specific enough to select a tool.
  2. Choose the tool category: use a drill/driver for general drilling and controlled screws, a hammer drill for masonry, and an impact driver for repeated demanding fastening.
  3. Fit the accessory: select a bit designed for the material. Use impact-rated bits in an impact driver and keep cutting edges sharp.
  4. Set speed and clutch: start slowly for screws and delicate materials; increase speed for suitable drilling. Use a low clutch setting first and raise it only when the fastener does not seat fully.
  5. Prepare the workpiece: clamp loose stock, mark the center, and make a pilot hole when the screw or bit requires it. Keeping the tool aligned reduces binding.
  6. Manage heat and battery: pause during sustained drilling, clear chips or dust, and swap batteries before the tool is forced through a low-charge shutdown.
  7. Verify the result: check screw depth, hole diameter and material damage before repeating the operation across the project.

Common problems and fixes

The tool stalls or stops

Reduce bit diameter, lower the clutch setting for fastening, clear chips, fully charge the battery and let the tool cool. If the application is still beyond the tool’s intended workload, move to a larger model rather than repeatedly resetting overload protection.

Screws strip or sit proud

Use the correct bit size, keep the driver in line with the screw, reduce speed and increase clutch setting gradually. For long or stubborn fasteners, an impact driver may provide better control than leaning harder on a drill/driver.

Masonry drilling is extremely slow

Confirm that hammer mode is selected, the bit is a masonry type and the substrate is not unusually dense. Reduce pressure enough to keep the bit cutting and clear dust. For many deep or large holes, a rotary hammer or larger specialist tool may be more appropriate.

The tool feels too heavy overhead

Use the smallest suitable battery, take short breaks, support the workpiece where possible and choose the shorter tool body. The kit’s with-battery weight is the useful reference for this decision, not the bare-tool listing.

Safety and maintenance essentials

  • Wear eye protection and hearing protection when drilling or using an impact mechanism.
  • Keep hands away from rotating accessories, secure the workpiece and remove the battery before changing bits.
  • Inspect bits, chucks and batteries for damage; do not use cracked accessories or swollen battery packs.
  • Follow the tool and battery manuals for charging, storage, temperature limits and cleaning.
  • Do not defeat overload protection or continue forcing a hot tool. A pause protects both the tool and the workpiece.

Milwaukee’s compact M18 drill/driver is a credible DIY choice for routine drilling and fastening, especially where a short body and manageable weight improve access. Select the compact hammer drill for masonry, add an impact driver when demanding fastening is common, and judge larger workloads by their actual hole sizes, fastener dimensions and repetition. The published specifications support those distinctions; they do not replace matching the tool to the job.
