Large Windows malware counts do not show that a Windows user is proportionally more likely to get infected than a Mac user. The figures commonly cited count collected files, variants, detections, or potentially unwanted applications—not infected computers or people measured under comparable conditions. They show that threats exist, but they are not a head-to-head measure of personal risk.
Why raw malware totals do not equal infection risk
A malware sample is an artifact collected or tested by a security organization. It is not the same thing as an infection. One threat may generate many near-identical samples; some collected files may be active only briefly; and some statistics combine malicious programs with potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), such as adware or bundled software.
To compare the chance that a person will be infected on Windows or macOS, a study would need comparable definitions, exposure, detection methods, and denominators—for example, infections per device or user over a stated period. The reports discussed here do not provide that matched dataset. Their sample totals therefore cannot establish comparative infection odds or prove that the platforms carry equal risk.

AV-TEST’s daily figure includes PUAs
AV-TEST says it registers more than 450,000 new malicious programs and potentially unwanted applications per day. The institute examines and classifies samples and displays cumulative and monthly statistics, but it also warns that many samples are active only briefly and that few pose a permanent threat. This is a collection statistic that includes PUAs—not a count of daily infections or lasting new threats. Its platform graphs are updated, so check the page for current values rather than relying on an old screenshot or an unqualified total. AV-TEST Malware Statistics & Trends Report

AV-Comparatives found Mac threats worth testing
For its Mac malware-protection test conducted in May 2025, AV-Comparatives selected 899 recent and representative Mac malware samples. The organization said it had collected thousands of unique Mac samples in the first half of the year, while noting that some could be classified as PUAs and that near-identical variants may differ only slightly. The tested set was deliberately selected; it is not a census of all threats or a measure of how many Macs were infected.
The test updated definitions to May 8, 2025, and kept systems online for cloud services. It assessed detection through insertion, scanning, copying, and execution. The report also assessed 750 prevalent Mac PUAs and 500 prevalent Windows malware samples as separate test sets. Because these sets differ in platform and category, their sizes should not be divided to produce a Windows-versus-Mac risk ratio. AV-Comparatives described its Mac set as small compared with Windows, while arguing that even a few threats can cause widespread damage, particularly when many Mac systems do not use third-party security software. That is the lab’s rationale for testing the samples, not an epidemiological finding about infection rates. AV-Comparatives Mac Security Test & Review 2025

Vendor threat reports describe observed activity, not a platform comparison
Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 describes attacks against known security gaps, financially motivated activity, and Lumma Stealer as its most prevalent observed infostealer between October 2024 and October 2025. Microsoft also says that a mid-2025 operation with government and law-enforcement partners seized or blocked more than 2,300 malicious domains. These observations illustrate active threat operations, but they do not compare Windows and macOS infection rates.
Microsoft reports that 97% of identity attacks were password-spray attacks. That percentage refers specifically to identity attacks in Microsoft’s reporting, not to all malware incidents or all users. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025

What controlled security tests can—and cannot—tell you
A lab result describes how a product performed against a defined sample set, with particular settings and test methods, during a stated period. It can be useful evidence about that product and test. It cannot guarantee protection against every future threat or tell you the probability that an ordinary user will be infected.
AV-Comparatives’ 2024 Mac report makes this distinction explicit: its results applied to particular sets of 643 recent Mac malware samples, 750 prevalent Mac PUAs, and 500 prevalent Windows malware samples. A 100% result meant no misses in that specific set, not universal protection. Those product percentages are not current rankings. AV-Comparatives Mac Security Report 2024

Similarly, AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 consumer test evaluated Microsoft Defender Antivirus version 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional. It reported 100% zero-day real-world protection in both months and 100% detection of its recent prevalent malware reference set in each month. This is evidence about Defender under that lab’s test conditions—not a Windows-versus-macOS comparison, a guarantee, or proof that additional security tools are never useful. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSo, are Macs safer than Windows PCs?
The sources here cannot answer that with a comparable infection-rate figure. A larger collection of Windows samples may reflect differences in the number of samples researchers encounter, how threats are classified, how many variants are collected, or which samples are selected for testing. Without common exposure and infection data, it does not establish how much more likely an individual Windows user is to be infected.

That limitation is not evidence that Windows and macOS have the same risk. It is a reason to avoid turning artifact counts into a personal-risk ranking. The evidence does establish that Mac malware exists and that Windows threats remain a subject of active monitoring and product testing.
What to do as a Mac or Windows user
Use the counts as a reminder that both platforms need sensible security habits, not as a reason to panic or to assume one operating system is immune. Choose protection based on your device, behavior, and the protection you need; treat lab results as bounded evidence, and check the test date, operating system, product version, sample set, and method before drawing conclusions.
Quick Recap
- Keep your operating system, browser, and applications updated so known security gaps are addressed.
- Be cautious with unexpected attachments, downloads, and requests for credentials, even when a message appears familiar.
- Use account protections that reduce the impact of stolen or guessed passwords.
- If considering security software, look for testing that matches your platform and needs, and read what the test actually measured rather than relying on a headline percentage.
