Mac cleaner apps are not automatically safe or unsafe because they belong to the “cleaner” category. Judge each app by its source, developer identity, macOS security warnings, requested permissions and the specific feature you plan to use. Gatekeeper and notarization help verify provenance and detect known malicious software, but they do not prove that an app is privacy-preserving or that every requested permission is necessary. Treat Full Disk Access as highly consequential, question requests for Accessibility or Automation, and grant access only when a trusted app can explain exactly why it needs it.
What “safe” means for a Mac cleaner
Safety has several separate dimensions. An app can be correctly signed yet request more data access than its cleaning feature needs. It can come from a legitimate developer yet collect usage information you would rather not share. It can also be useful for a narrow task while being unnecessary because macOS already provides a built-in way to manage storage.
Start with provenance. Apps from the Mac App Store are reviewed and signed by Apple. For software downloaded elsewhere, macOS checks a Developer ID signature and, by default on macOS Catalina and later, notarization. Gatekeeper can block or warn about software that cannot be checked. Apple’s guidance is to investigate an alert rather than blindly bypass it: contact the developer, look for an updated App Store version or choose an alternative. The relevant question is therefore not “Are cleaners safe?” but “Is this particular app, with these permissions, necessary and trustworthy for this task?”

Permissions that deserve the most scrutiny
macOS places sensitive capabilities behind explicit consent. Apple’s Platform Security documentation says users should have “full transparency, consent, and control over what apps are doing with their data.” The following permissions vary in impact and should be evaluated against a specific feature, not granted as a package.

Apple explains these protected resources and their controls in Controlling app access to files in macOS. A permission prompt is not proof of malicious intent; it is a signal to check necessity, scope and trust.
Why Full Disk Access is different
Without Full Disk Access, a utility may be unable to inspect some protected locations, so a vendor may request it for a more complete scan. That broader visibility also increases the consequences of a compromised, misconfigured or over-aggressive app. If you grant it, use a product whose developer identity you have verified, understand what the scan will examine and keep deletion review enabled. Do not interpret “the scan found more items” as evidence that the permission was essential or that every result should be removed.

How to check an app before installing it
- Use a trustworthy distribution channel. Prefer the Mac App Store or the developer’s official download page. Confirm the displayed developer name, spelling and domain before opening the installer.
- Read the first-open warning. If macOS says it cannot check the app or cannot verify the developer, stop and investigate. Apple’s instructions at Safely open apps on your Mac describe the relevant alerts. Do not override a warning solely because the app has a polished website or calls itself a cleaner.
- Check what security verification does and does not mean. A valid signature and notarization support provenance and screening for known malicious software. They do not verify the developer’s privacy promises, the accuracy of cleanup recommendations or the necessity of every permission.
- Map each prompt to a feature. Before clicking Allow, identify the scan, duplicate finder, browser-data tool or other action that requires the access. If the explanation is vague, postpone the decision.
- Look for user control. A responsible utility should show scan results and deletion candidates before taking destructive action, with ways to exclude files, folders or categories. Verify this in the current version instead of relying on marketing language.
- Read privacy disclosures. Note what the developer says it collects, why it collects it and whether the statement is self-reported. A disclosure is useful information, but it is not an independent audit.
- Consider a narrower alternative. If macOS settings or a purpose-built utility can perform the same task without broad access, that may be the lower-risk choice.
How to grant, review and revoke access
On macOS 13 and later, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy. Select the permission category, then use the controls to enable or disable the listed app. You may need to authenticate with an administrator password or Touch ID. On macOS 12 and earlier, the path is System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Apple documents both layouts in Controlling app access to files in macOS.
- Open the relevant Privacy category, such as Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation or Files and Folders.
- Identify the app by its complete name and developer context. Remove similarly named or obsolete entries you do not recognize.
- Turn access on only for the feature you are about to use, then return to the same pane after the task.
- Turn access off when you no longer need it, and remove the app if you have uninstalled it. Do not assume uninstalling automatically removes every consent record.
On a Mac managed by an employer or school, an administrator’s configuration profile can restrict these controls. If a setting is unavailable or immediately reverts, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass policy.
Using a cleaner without surrendering unnecessary control
Before the first scan
- Back up important files. Cleanup software can make broad changes, and a backup gives you a recovery path.
- Close applications whose caches or temporary files you intend to inspect, unless the utility specifically requires them to remain open.
- Read the scan categories and exclusions. Be particularly cautious with system folders, application support data, browser profiles, mail databases and files marked as “old” rather than clearly disposable.
- Record the permissions you enabled so you can audit them afterward.
During the scan and deletion review
- Prefer a preview of individual files or grouped categories over a single “clean everything” action.
- Keep personal documents, project folders, saved application data and anything whose purpose you cannot identify.
- Use the app’s quarantine, undo or restore function when available, and learn how long recovery remains possible.
- Run one category at a time if the utility allows it. That makes an unexpected change easier to trace.
After the task
Check the applications and workflows you rely on. If a program loses settings, browser sessions, plug-ins or local databases, restore the affected items from the cleaner’s recovery area or your backup. Then revisit Privacy & Security and revoke permissions that are no longer needed.

Example: what a Full Disk Access request tells you
MacPaw’s support article says CleanMyMac requests Full Disk Access “to detect and remove more unneeded items from your Mac.” That is the vendor’s stated reason for the request, not independent proof that granting it is safe for every user or configuration. The product’s Mac App Store listing describes cleanup, malware scanning and background-process management. Its privacy section says the developer indicated that it may collect contact information, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics for listed purposes, while also stating that Apple has not verified those privacy practices. Treat those statements as the developer’s disclosures, not as an independent finding. The listing and permissions can change, so check the live entry and the prompt shown by your installed version at the CleanMyMac Mac App Store listing.
A practical comparison framework
When assessing two cleaners, score each one on the same questions rather than assigning a broad “safe” or “unsafe” label.

Warning signs and what to do
macOS says it cannot check the app
Do not treat the alert as a minor inconvenience. Verify the download source, look for a newer signed or notarized release and contact the developer through its official channel. If you cannot establish who built the app or why the warning appears, remove it and choose another solution.
The app insists on several sensitive permissions
Decline first and test the feature without them. Ask the developer for a feature-by-feature explanation. A cleanup utility that needs Accessibility, Automation, Full Disk Access and personal-data permissions should provide a particularly clear justification for each; otherwise, select a narrower tool.
You cannot tell what will be deleted
Cancel the operation. Look for a detailed results view, exclusions and a recovery option. If those controls do not exist, do not grant broader access merely to make the scan complete.

A permission remains after you stop using the app
Open Privacy & Security, switch off the relevant category and remove the app. Recheck after a restart if the entry was difficult to identify. Managed Macs may require an administrator to change the setting.
The bottom line on cleaner safety
A Mac cleaner can be a legitimate utility, but its category is not a security certificate. Verify provenance and warnings, understand the limits of notarization, demand a feature-specific reason for every permission and retain control over proposed deletions. Full Disk Access is the broadest file permission; Accessibility and Automation also require explicit scrutiny. Grant only what a trusted app needs for a task you understand, then revoke it when that task is finished.
