Sometimes—but not by default. A child should wear light-up shoes in rain only when the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model allow the exposure. Skechers describes its light-up shoes as water-resistant for light moisture, while Stride Rite identifies its M2P light-up shoes as waterproof. Those are model-specific claims, not a rule for every light-up shoe.
If the product information does not explicitly cover rain or waterproof use, keep the shoes out of prolonged rain, deep puddles and submersion.
Why the answer depends on the exact pair
Light-up shoes do not all use the same construction. Electronics may be sealed differently, and manufacturers can set different limits for rain, puddles, washing and immersion. A waterproof claim for one line cannot be transferred to another brand or model.

Skechers’ “The Ultimate Parents’ Guide to Skechers Kids’ Light-Up Shoes,” published February 16, 2026, says: “They are water-resistant for light moisture (rain, damp grass), but deep puddles or submersion may affect performance.” That wording permits a narrow exposure—light moisture—while warning that heavier water can interfere with operation.

Skechers’ customer-support guidance is more conservative. It advises keeping light-up styles dry and warns that submerging them may cause the lights to fail. When the parent guide and support advice appear broader or narrower, use the instructions for the specific model and the more cautious limit.
Stride Rite describes its M2P light-up shoes as “machine-washable and waterproof,” explaining that the light units are sealed inside the outsole. This is a claim for the M2P line, not evidence that all light-up footwear has sealed electronics.
Rain, puddles and submersion are different exposures
“Can kids wear light-up shoes in the rain?” has no useful yes-or-no answer without defining how much water is involved. Use the manufacturer’s stated exposure, not the child’s label for the weather.

The table separates water exposure from cleaning. A shoe described as water-resistant is not automatically suitable for soaking, and a product advertised as washable may still have model-specific instructions about the cycle, temperature or drying method.
How to check whether a pair is suitable
Read the product page, box, sewn-in label and care instructions for the exact model number. Look for the manufacturer’s own terms rather than a retailer’s generic description.
- Identify the exact model. Record the style name or number, size line and any version or collaboration name. “Light-up shoes” is a category, not a water-protection specification.
- Find the water claim. Distinguish “waterproof” from “water-resistant.” Check whether the wording mentions rain, damp grass, puddles, washing or submersion.
- Read the limitations. A statement that permits light moisture may simultaneously warn against deep puddles or immersion.
- Check care instructions. Confirm how to clean and dry the pair. Instructions for another model or another product line do not establish safe treatment for yours.
- Use the stricter instruction when information conflicts. If a marketing page sounds permissive but customer support says to keep the style dry, avoid substantial water and ask the manufacturer about the specific model.
Everyday situations parents ask about
A brief walk through drizzle is a different decision from an afternoon at a splash pad. If the model’s instructions permit light moisture, a child may be able to cross wet grass or walk in light rain, but the shoes should not be treated as rain boots. Choose ordinary waterproof boots for sustained downpours when the light-up pair lacks an explicit waterproof claim.

Playground puddles deserve special attention. A child can step into water deeper than the upper, forcing moisture toward seams and the sole. Because Skechers specifically warns that deep puddles may affect performance, redirect play when the model is covered only for light moisture. Do not test the claim by dunking one shoe.

For school or daycare, tell caregivers the model’s limit. A note that says “water-resistant for light moisture” does not authorize water play, and “waterproof” still does not necessarily mean submersible. Keep the product page or care label available if staff need to check the wording.
What to do when light-up shoes get wet
Gentle cleaning and drying reduce the chance that moisture or residue will interfere with the wiring and battery performance. Skechers gives the following approach for its light-up shoes; follow a different method if the maker of your pair says otherwise.
- Remove surface water. Take off the shoes and wipe away standing water with a soft cloth.
- Spot-clean only. Use mild soap and warm water on a soft brush or cloth. Work on the dirty area instead of soaking the shoe.
- Wipe off residue. Use a damp cloth to remove soap and loosened dirt.
- Air-dry naturally. Leave the shoes in a ventilated place away from direct heat. Do not place them on a radiator or use a heat gun or hair dryer.
- Do not machine wash or machine dry Skechers light-up shoes. Mechanical agitation, heat and a large volume of water can exceed the care limits in Skechers’ guide.
- Check the instructions before reuse. If the model’s guide gives a different cleaning or drying method, that model-specific direction controls.
Do not try to speed drying by opening the sole or cutting into the shoe. Such work can damage the wiring and may expose the battery compartment.
If the lights stop working after rain
A light failure after wet exposure is a performance problem, not proof that the child has been exposed to a dangerous electrical condition. The available manufacturer guidance warns that water can interfere with wiring and battery performance, but it does not establish a universal injury risk from rain.

- Follow the maker’s natural-air-drying instructions and keep the pair away from direct heat.
- Do not machine wash, machine dry or submerge the shoes in an attempt to clean them.
- Do not open the sole or try to replace an internal battery.

Battery safety: what parents should and should not infer
Skechers customer support says its light-up styles contain non-replaceable coin batteries and warns customers not to attempt to access them. That means parents should not cut into the outsole, pry open a light module or let a child handle an internal battery.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 15, 2026 warning about accessible coin batteries concerned a separate product: submersible LED lights sold under the Akavivo name. It is useful background on why an accessible coin battery can be hazardous if swallowed, but it is not evidence that children’s light-up shoes as a class contain accessible batteries or that rain makes shoe batteries dangerous.
Keep the shoe’s battery compartment closed and intact. If a shoe is damaged so that a battery or wiring becomes accessible, stop using it and contact the manufacturer for instructions.
Choosing a pair for a wet climate
Rainy commutes, wet playgrounds and outdoor school activities require a clearer specification than a picture of flashing lights. Compare models using the manufacturer’s wording.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on a retailer’s headline. A listing may say “rain-ready” without defining whether that means light splashes or full waterproofing. Verify the manufacturer’s page.
- Assuming a sealed-looking sole is waterproof. Appearance does not establish how the electronics are protected.
- Confusing washable with submersible. Even a machine-washable claim is limited to the maker’s stated method; it is not permission to soak shoes in a tub.
- Using heat to dry faster. Direct heat can conflict with care guidance and may damage materials or electronics.
- Repairing the light module at home. Opening the sole can damage wiring and expose a non-replaceable coin battery.
