Yes—an unidentified lawn mushroom can harm a child or pet if it is eaten. Some wild species cause vomiting and diarrhea; others can produce neurologic effects, severe liver or kidney injury, coma, or death. You cannot establish safety from a mushroom’s color, shape, location in the lawn, a photograph, or an identification app.
Seeing mushrooms in the grass does not by itself prove that anyone has been poisoned. The urgent issue is possible ingestion: keep people and animals away, do not wait for symptoms, and contact the appropriate poison or veterinary service immediately.
What makes lawn mushrooms dangerous?
Mushrooms that appear in a lawn are wild mushrooms unless a qualified expert has identified them. Several poisonous species closely resemble edible species, and the features needed to distinguish them are not reliably visible in a casual inspection. Poison Control’s guidance is unequivocal: “It is NEVER safe to eat a wild mushroom unless a mushroom identification expert says so.” See Poison Control’s wild-mushroom warning.

Simply finding mushrooms in grass does not establish that a child or pet has been exposed to a toxin. However, young children and animals may pick up and swallow mushrooms before an adult notices, so an uncertain situation should be treated as a possible ingestion rather than dismissed because the mushroom looks ordinary.

Toxic effects vary by species and dose. Reported outcomes include:
- vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal illness;
- confusion, hallucinations, seizures, or coma from mushrooms that affect the nervous system;
- delayed liver or kidney damage;
- breathing problems and, in the most serious cases, death.
Those symptoms are examples of what some toxic species can do—not a way to identify the mushroom in your yard. The absence of symptoms is not proof of safety because onset can be delayed. ASPCA’s veterinary information and Poison Control’s clinical guidance both recommend prompt expert advice after a suspected ingestion.
If a child may have eaten a lawn mushroom
Do not wait to see whether the child becomes ill. In the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or use webPOISONCONTROL and the other contact options listed by Poison Control. Poison Control specifically advises calling right away when someone may have eaten a wild mushroom, even if the child appears well.

- Move the child away from the lawn. Check the mouth and remove any remaining pieces you can see, but do not put your fingers deep into the throat.
- Call for case-specific advice. Give the child’s age and weight if known, the approximate time, and how much might have been eaten. Tell the specialist whether vomiting or other symptoms have started.
- Do not induce vomiting or give home remedies unless a poison professional or emergency clinician tells you to. Do not offer another food or drink as a supposed antidote.
- Preserve useful evidence safely. If you can do so without handling it unnecessarily, keep the mushroom or take clear close-up photographs of its cap, underside, stalk, base, and the surrounding lawn. Do not taste or cook it to test whether it is edible.
- Escalate immediately for severe symptoms. Call emergency services if the child has trouble breathing, a seizure, collapses, cannot be awakened, or is rapidly deteriorating. Poison Control can advise whether an emergency department is needed in less severe cases.
Children should be supervised outdoors in areas where mushrooms may grow. The CDC’s guidance states that children should not be fed wild mushrooms unless experts have identified them. CDC’s report on accidental mushroom ingestions provides that supervision recommendation.
If a dog or cat may have eaten one
Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison service as soon as possible. In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control can be reached at (888) 426-4435; a consultation fee may apply. ASPCA also advises immediate veterinary attention when a pet is symptomatic. See ASPCA’s mushroom-toxicosis guidance.
- Remove access to the area and check whether other mushrooms are present.
- Call the veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly. Report the pet’s species, weight, age, health conditions, the suspected mushroom, the time of exposure, and any signs of illness.
- Do not give hydrogen peroxide, activated charcoal, food, or other treatment on your own. A poison professional must decide whether decontamination is appropriate and safe.
- Take photographs or retain a specimen if safe. A close-up of the cap, gills or pores, stalk, base, and where it was growing can help an expert. Keep the sample away from children and animals.
- Go to an emergency veterinary clinic for serious signs such as repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, seizures, collapse, extreme weakness, or marked behavioral changes.
Some liver-toxic mushrooms can have a delayed course. ASPCA’s 2017 pet guidance describes possible onset after 8–24 hours, with stomach upset, reduced appetite or energy, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. That is a possible delay for some mushrooms, not a universal timetable; a pet that looks normal still needs professional advice after a credible exposure. ASPCA’s pet-safety article explains the delayed-risk concern.

Symptoms: what to watch for, and why waiting is unsafe
Symptoms depend on the species, amount eaten, and the person or animal exposed. Possible effects reported by the sources include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Possible effect | What the guidance says |
|---|---|
| Digestive illness | Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal or severe stomach upset, and loss of appetite can occur. |
| Neurologic effects | Confusion, hallucinations, seizures, coma, or major behavior changes are possible with some species. |
| Organ injury | Some toxins damage the liver or kidneys, and injury may become evident only after a delay. |
| Other emergency signs | Breathing difficulty, collapse, profound weakness, or yellowing of the eyes or skin requires urgent care. |
Do not use this list as a “wait and see” checklist. A person or pet may have no symptoms during the period when treatment decisions are most useful. Call first and follow the poison specialist’s or veterinarian’s instructions.
Can you tell whether a lawn mushroom is poisonous by looking?
No simple visual rule can make an unidentified mushroom safe. Poison Control notes that expert identification may require examining all of the following:

Look-alikes can fool people who have eaten or collected mushrooms before, and knowledge from one region may not transfer to another. A phone app, online photograph, or field-guide match is not a safety certification. Do not eat the mushroom, feed it to a child or pet, or recommend it to someone else based on a casual identification.
If an expert needs a sample, photograph it in place first and include an object for scale. Photograph the top, underside, full stalk, base, and surrounding habitat. Handle it as little as possible, wash your hands afterward, and keep the sample sealed and inaccessible. ASPCA notes that a local university mycology department or a qualified mycology consultation may be a route to identification, but identification is not a substitute for poison or veterinary advice after ingestion. The ASPCA identification guidance and Poison Control’s feature list describe the limits of lay identification.

- Inspect the lawn frequently. Mushrooms can appear quickly, particularly after conditions that leave the grass damp.
- Remove visible mushrooms before pets go outside. Place them in a closed container or bag and put them where children and animals cannot reach them. Removal reduces access but does not prove that the lawn is risk-free.
- Supervise children and pets outdoors. Watch for picking, chewing, or carrying a mushroom, not just for obvious swallowing.
- Check again after mowing, watering, or rain. A previously inspected lawn can contain new growth later the same day.
- Do not rely on fungicide, a barrier, or a particular removal tool as guaranteed protection. The cited medical and veterinary guidance emphasizes supervision and prompt response, not a product that eliminates poisoning risk.
If you find evidence of chewing—missing pieces, a mushroom in a child’s mouth, or a pet licking or swallowing one—treat it as a possible ingestion and make the appropriate call even if the lawn otherwise looks clean.
What the available statistics do—and do not—show
Published numbers demonstrate that wild-mushroom poisoning can be severe, but they do not provide a precise probability for a mushroom growing in your particular lawn.
| Report | What it counted | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| California response reported by CDC in 2026 | 39 suspected cases after foraged wild-mushroom ingestion in California from November 18, 2025, through March 17, 2026; 3 liver transplants and 4 deaths were reported. | Shows the potential severity of some ingestions. It is not a lawn-exposure rate and does not estimate the chance that a random yard mushroom is toxic. Read the CDC report. |
| CDC MarketScan analysis published in 2021 | 556 accidental poisonous-mushroom ingestion diagnoses using U.S. claims data from 2016–2018. | These are claims-based historical data, not a current national incidence estimate, and they do not isolate mushrooms found in lawns. Read the analysis. |
The statistics cannot tell you that a mushroom is safe because it is common, small, white, growing in grass, or growing where dogs usually play. They support the practical rule used by poison experts: prevent eating and seek advice promptly after a suspected exposure.
Which expert should you call?
Use the route that matches who may have been exposed:
| Situation | First contact in the United States | Outside the United States |
|---|---|---|
| Child or other person may have swallowed a mushroom | Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222 or webPOISONCONTROL. | Your country’s poison center or emergency medical service. |
| Dog, cat, or other pet may have swallowed one | Your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. | A local veterinarian or animal poison service. |
| Only identification is needed and nobody ate it | A qualified mycologist or local university mycology service may be able to examine a specimen. | A trained local mycology service, while still keeping the specimen away from people and animals. |
Poison services and veterinarians need facts, not a confident species guess. Have the time of possible exposure, the person’s or pet’s age and weight, symptoms, and photographs or a safely retained sample ready. Never delay a medical or veterinary call while trying to obtain a perfect identification.
Bottom line for a yard with mushrooms
Assume an unidentified lawn mushroom could be toxic if eaten. Keep children and pets from picking or chewing it, inspect and remove mushrooms before outdoor play, and supervise outside. If ingestion might have occurred, call Poison Control for a person or a veterinarian/animal poison service for a pet immediately—even when there are no symptoms. Appearance, location, a photograph, and a phone-app match cannot establish that a wild mushroom is safe.
