Usually, the documented problem with lawn grubs is damage to grass roots—not proven poisoning of people, pets, or birds. However, the extension sources available for this question do not provide direct toxicology evidence showing that every grub species is harmless when touched or eaten. Treat the grub and any insecticide used against it as separate questions.
Birds, moles, skunks, and other wildlife may dig for grubs, but digging is not proof that grubs are present. If you need to decide whether control is justified, inspect the turf and soil first, then follow local extension guidance and the exact pesticide label.
What lawn grubs are and why they appear
Lawn grubs are the immature, soft-bodied stage of several beetles and chafers. They live in the soil and feed on grass roots. The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension explains that vigorous turf can tolerate some feeding, while heavily damaged areas become thin and may pull up easily because the roots have been eaten.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The visible symptoms are therefore mainly horticultural: thinning patches, loose turf, and animals disturbing the surface while searching for food. A grub is not the same thing as a lawn insecticide. Any risk to a person, pet, bird, pollinator, or soil organism can depend on the product’s active ingredient, formulation, application rate, timing, and label precautions.

Are lawn grubs poisonous to people?
What the available evidence establishes
The reviewed extension material does not establish that lawn grubs commonly poison or injure people through ordinary contact. It also does not establish universal safety for every beetle or chafer larva, every amount eaten, or every individual exposure. The practical conclusion is narrower than either “grubs are toxic” or “grubs are completely harmless”: common lawn damage is well documented, while direct human toxicology for touching or eating grubs remains unresolved in these sources.
Touching a grub
Finding a grub while digging does not, by itself, indicate a poisoning hazard. Avoid rubbing soil or insect material into your eyes or mouth, and wash your hands after handling turf and soil. Those routine hygiene steps do not identify a species or prove a toxic effect; they simply reduce accidental transfer of soil and whatever else may be on it.
Eating a grub
There is no named statistic or authoritative ingestion limit in the extension sources reviewed. If someone has swallowed a grub, has an unusual reaction, or may also have contacted a lawn treatment, obtain case-specific advice from a qualified poison-information or medical professional. The sources do not provide a treatment protocol, so do not infer one from the grub’s appearance or from advice about a different species.

Are lawn grubs harmful to dogs and cats?
Why a pet may eat one
Dogs and cats can encounter grubs while digging, nosing through loose turf, or eating insects. The extension references do not provide direct toxicology studies that settle the risk of a dog or cat touching or swallowing lawn grubs. Consequently, it is not supportable to promise that a grub is safe for every pet, nor to claim that a single grub is normally poisonous.
What to do after possible ingestion
- Note what the animal may have eaten and when, including whether a lawn product was recently applied.
- Watch for abnormal signs and contact a veterinarian or veterinary poison-information service if the animal is symptomatic, the amount is substantial, the species is unknown, or an insecticide may be involved.
- Have the product container or label available if a treatment was used. Product-specific advice is more reliable than general statements about “grubs.”
Do not transfer a safety statement about one biological control to unrelated pesticides. The question of grub toxicity and the question of pesticide exposure must be evaluated separately.
Do birds eat lawn grubs, and are the grubs dangerous to them?
Foraging is common, but it is not a diagnosis
Birds may feed in lawns where grubs are available. A UNH Extension grub-control transcript describes birds, moles, and skunks feeding in a lawn as a possible indication of grubs. The associated guidance cautions that this clue is not conclusive: wildlife also digs for earthworms and other soil insects. Bird activity alone therefore cannot tell you how many grubs are present.

What is known about harm to birds
The reviewed sources do not settle whether eating lawn grubs causes direct toxicity in birds. They document wildlife foraging and turf disturbance, not a species-by-species safety assessment of grub ingestion. If a bird appears ill after feeding in a treated area, contact a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian for case-specific guidance and identify any product used on the lawn.
The bigger bird-related risk can be the treatment
Managing soil insects can affect non-target wildlife. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program notes that insecticides used to manage invertebrates can contribute to contamination and harm human health or ecosystems. That does not mean every product causes those effects, but it is a reason to confirm the pest, use the narrowest effective treatment, and follow the label rather than applying a product simply because birds are digging.
How to confirm that grubs are actually causing the lawn problem
Inspection is more reliable than guessing from brown patches or animal activity. Nate Bernitz of UNH Extension writes, “The only way to be sure that you have grubs is to scout for them in your lawn.”

- Choose a representative patch. Select an area where turf is thinning or lifting, rather than sampling only a spot that an animal has disturbed.
- Cut a one-square-foot section. Use a shovel or lawn edger to cut three sides of a square section of turf. Peel it back carefully so the root zone and soil remain available for inspection.
- Inspect and count. Look through the soil and roots for the C-shaped larvae and count the grubs in that square-foot sample.
- Replace the sample. Fold the turf back into place and press it down so the roots do not dry out unnecessarily.
- Interpret the number locally. UNH’s New Hampshire guidance describes 10 or more grubs per square foot as a serious infestation. That is a regional 2019 threshold, not a universal treatment rule. Soil type, grass health, grub species, season, and local recommendations can change the action level.
Healthy grass may withstand some root feeding, so the count should be considered with the condition of the turf. Conversely, a low count in a stressed lawn may still coincide with visible damage. Ask your state or provincial extension service for a local threshold instead of exporting New Hampshire’s number to another region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you treat the lawn?
Start with confirmation and timing
Treatment is most defensible when you have confirmed grubs, assessed the density, and determined that the damage justifies intervention. Local timing matters because products differ in which life stage they affect and when they work best. A product that is labeled for one grub species or application window may not be appropriate for another.
Compare management choices by the factors that matter
- Confirmed pest and density: Do not treat solely on the basis of bird or mammal digging.
- Local life cycle: Follow regional advice on when susceptible stages are present.
- Active ingredient and label: Read the complete label for permitted sites, rates, re-entry directions, protective equipment, storage, and disposal.
- Biological or chemical approach: Check that the method is labeled or otherwise recommended for the grub identified in your lawn.
- Non-target effects: Consider people, pets, birds, pollinators, aquatic areas, earthworms, and other soil organisms before applying anything.
A shovel or lawn edger is enough to perform the diagnostic sampling described by UNH Extension. You do not need to purchase a control product merely because grubs are present.

What about products containing Bacillus thuringiensis galleriae?
A 2024 Ask Extension response reports that a grub-control product based on Bacillus thuringiensis galleriae is safe for pets and children when directions on its label are followed. That statement is product- and label-specific. It should not be expanded into a claim that all formulations, all microbial products, all grub species, or all exposure situations are safe.
Before using any treatment, verify the current label for your location and lawn site. Keep people and animals away as the label directs, prevent drift or runoff, and observe any watering or re-entry instructions. If the label does not clearly cover your pest, turf, and intended use, ask a local extension professional before applying it.
How to think about a possible exposure
Grub only, no product involved
The available sources do not define a toxic dose for a grub eaten by a person, dog, cat, or bird. If there are no symptoms, monitor normally and avoid further exposure. If symptoms occur or the amount is uncertain, seek advice from the appropriate medical, veterinary, or wildlife professional rather than relying on a generalized internet assurance.

Grub plus a lawn treatment
When an insecticide, fertilizer blend, or other lawn chemical may be involved, the chemical label becomes essential. Record the product name, active ingredient, application time, and possible route of exposure. Contact a poison-information service, veterinarian, physician, or wildlife rehabilitator as appropriate, especially when symptoms are present. Do not assume that a statement about the grub itself applies to the product.
Birds or mammals digging after treatment
Wildlife activity can indicate available food, but it does not prove either infestation or poisoning. Follow the product’s wildlife and re-entry precautions, and obtain professional help if an animal is visibly ill or dead. The extension sources do not provide a universal waiting period that can replace the label for every product.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for a safe decision
- The established lawn effect of grubs is root feeding that can thin turf and make it lift easily.
- Birds and mammals may forage for grubs, but their digging is not a reliable diagnosis.
- UNH’s benchmark of 10 or more grubs per square foot applies to its New Hampshire guidance; local thresholds differ.
- Direct toxicology evidence for people, pets, or birds touching or eating lawn grubs is not established by the reviewed extension sources.
- Any insecticide presents a separate, label-dependent exposure question, with potential non-target effects.
- Confirm the pest before treating, use local timing advice, and seek case-specific professional help after a symptomatic exposure.
