Neither is universally better. I Bonds usually suit an individual building a modest, inflation-linked savings reserve who values federal-tax deferral and no market-price volatility. TIPS are usually better for larger allocations, tradability, regular income, or a maturity ladder. The deciding issues are how much you can invest, when you may need the money, whether you need cash payments, and where you will hold the security—not inflation protection alone.

How I Bonds and TIPS protect against inflation

Both products are issued by the U.S. Treasury and adjust returns using the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), but they do so differently. I Bonds are nonmarketable savings bonds. TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) are marketable Treasury securities that trade in the secondary market.

I Bonds: an inflation-linked savings bond

An I Bond earns a composite interest rate made from a fixed rate and a semiannual inflation rate based on CPI-U. The Treasury changes the inflation component and the composite rate every six months. Interest accrues inside the bond rather than being sent to you periodically, and you normally receive it when you redeem the bond.

I Bonds are not traded. After the required holding period, you redeem them through TreasuryDirect rather than selling them to another investor. Treasury’s comparison describes the composite rate as able to fall but not below zero, so the bond’s composite earnings rate does not become negative during a period of falling prices.

TIPS: an inflation-adjusted Treasury security

With TIPS, the Treasury adjusts the security’s principal using CPI-U. A fixed coupon is then calculated on that adjusted principal and paid every six months. If inflation raises the principal, the dollar amount of future coupon payments can rise; if the index adjustment falls, coupon dollars can fall.

TIPS are marketable. You can buy them at a Treasury auction or through a bank, broker, or dealer, and you can sell before maturity. The price you receive depends on interest rates, inflation expectations, credit-market conditions, and demand at the time of sale. It can be above or below what you paid.

Side-by-side differences

Feature I Bonds TIPS
Inflation adjustment Composite rate combines a fixed rate with a semiannual CPI-U-based inflation rate. Principal is adjusted with CPI-U; a fixed coupon is paid on the adjusted principal.
Trading and redemption Nonmarketable; redeem through TreasuryDirect after the one-year minimum holding period. Marketable; buy at auction or through financial institutions and sell before maturity.
Cash flow Interest accrues and is paid when redeemed. Interest is paid every six months.
Capacity and minimum $10,000 per Social Security number per calendar year for electronic purchases. $100 minimum; TreasuryDirect lists up to $10 million for a noncompetitive auction purchase.
Federal tax timing Federal tax can generally be deferred until redemption, final maturity, or another taxable disposition. Federal tax generally applies each year to coupon interest and inflation adjustments.
State and local tax Exempt from state and local income tax. Exempt from state and local income tax.
Early exit No redemption during the first 12 months; redeeming before five years costs the last three months of interest. Sale is possible before maturity, but the market price may be higher or lower than your cost.
Deflation protection The composite earnings rate cannot fall below zero. At maturity, Treasury pays the greater of inflation-adjusted principal or original principal.

What the 2026 I Bond rate means

For I Bonds issued from May 1 through October 31, 2026, TreasuryDirect lists a 4.26% composite rate, including a 0.90% fixed rate. The quoted composite rate applies to bonds issued during that six-month window; the inflation component and composite rate reset every six months. A bond’s fixed rate is set when it is issued, while later six-month periods use the Treasury’s applicable inflation calculation.

Do not treat 4.26% as a permanent yield or as a prediction of future inflation. Rates, purchase limits, and Treasury procedures can change. Check the current TreasuryDirect rate before buying, especially if the purchase date is near a May or November reset.

Which has less risk?

I Bond risks and constraints

  • Liquidity risk: You cannot redeem an I Bond during its first 12 months. If you redeem after 12 months but before the five-year anniversary, Treasury withholds the most recent three months of interest.
  • Capacity risk: Electronic purchases are limited to $10,000 per Social Security number per calendar year, which makes I Bonds difficult to use for a very large inflation allocation.
  • Rate risk: The composite rate changes with the six-month inflation calculation. A lower future rate does not reduce the bond’s principal, but it can reduce future growth.
  • Access risk: Because the bond is nonmarketable, you cannot sell it instantly at a quoted market price if you need cash.

I Bonds avoid the day-to-day price swings that appear in a brokerage account. If you can wait through the lockup and accept the annual limit, that stability is a major advantage for emergency reserves that are not needed immediately or for a long-term savings bucket.

TIPS risks and constraints

  • Market-price risk: A TIPS can lose market value before maturity. Rising real interest rates generally pressure existing TIPS prices, even if the CPI adjustment is positive.
  • Inflation-measurement risk: The adjustment follows CPI-U, which may not match your household’s personal spending pattern.
  • Cash-flow and reinvestment risk: Coupons arrive every six months, but the amount can change as adjusted principal changes. Reinvesting coupons may occur at different market yields.
  • Tax-timing risk: Federal tax can be due on an inflation adjustment before you receive that amount as cash.

If you hold a TIPS to maturity, Treasury’s stated protection is that you receive whichever is greater: the inflation-adjusted principal or the original principal. That maturity guarantee does not prevent losses if you sell earlier.

How the tax treatment differs

I Bonds: tax deferral

Interest on I Bonds is generally exempt from state and local income tax. For federal income tax, you can usually defer reporting interest until the bond is redeemed, reaches final maturity, or is otherwise disposed of in a taxable transaction. Deferral can be valuable when you want the bond to compound without an annual tax bill.

Qualified higher-education use may allow a federal tax exclusion, but only if the IRS requirements—including eligible expenses, ownership rules, filing status, and income limits—are met. Confirm current IRS rules before relying on that benefit.

TIPS: annual taxation of income and adjustments

TIPS coupon interest and inflation adjustments generally create federal taxable income as they occur. The inflation adjustment can therefore produce “phantom income”: taxable income that increases the bond’s principal but is not paid to you as spendable cash that year. TIPS are also exempt from state and local income tax.

Because tax treatment depends on the account, a TIPS held directly in a taxable brokerage account can have a different practical result from one held in a retirement account. The Treasury security’s tax rules do not by themselves determine the tax treatment of an IRA, 401(k), or fund that owns TIPS.

Which is better for retirement income?

When I Bonds fit retirement planning

I Bonds can serve as a conservative reserve for a retiree who wants inflation-linked growth without watching a market quote. They do not provide scheduled income, so you must redeem units when you want cash. The $10,000 annual electronic limit per Social Security number also means building a large balance takes time, unless other permitted purchase channels apply to your situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The one-year lockup makes I Bonds unsuitable for money that may be needed immediately. A retiree should keep a separate liquid cash reserve rather than counting an unredeemable bond as an emergency fund.

When TIPS fit retirement planning

TIPS pay every six months, making them easier to coordinate with planned spending. Their 5-, 10-, and 30-year maturities can be combined into a ladder: securities mature in different years, returning principal on a schedule. A ladder can help match known future expenses, but each security’s price before maturity still moves with the market.

TIPS are also scalable. TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum and up to $10 million for a noncompetitive auction purchase. Large investors can therefore obtain substantially more inflation-linked exposure than the I Bond annual limit permits. The trade-off is market risk, brokerage or transaction considerations, and annual federal taxation outside tax-advantaged accounts.

How to choose between them

Choose I Bonds when these conditions dominate

  • You are investing a small-to-moderate amount and the $10,000 annual electronic limit is sufficient.
  • You can leave the money untouched for at least 12 months and preferably five years.
  • You want federal-tax deferral and state and local tax exemption.
  • You prefer a nonmarketable savings bond whose value does not fluctuate with daily market prices.
  • You are saving for a long-term goal and do not need semiannual cash payments.

Choose TIPS when these conditions dominate

  • You need to invest more than the I Bond annual electronic limit.
  • You want to sell before maturity if circumstances change.
  • You want semiannual interest payments or a ladder of known maturity dates.
  • You accept that the market value can fall before maturity.
  • You can place the investment where annual federal taxation of coupons and inflation adjustments is manageable.

Use a mixed approach when the jobs are different

The two securities do not have to compete for the same dollar. An investor might use I Bonds for a tax-deferred, long-term reserve and TIPS for a larger ladder or for scheduled income. That combination does not remove either product’s limits: I Bonds remain locked for the first year, while TIPS remain exposed to market prices before maturity.

Buying and holding: practical checks

  1. Set the job for the money. Identify whether the goal is emergency reserves, a future purchase, retirement income, or a specific maturity date.
  2. Check the time horizon. Reject I Bonds for money needed within 12 months. For TIPS, decide whether you can hold through maturity or might need to sell early.
  3. Check the account and tax location. Compare taxable-account treatment with the rules of any retirement account or fund you are considering.
  4. Check current terms. Verify the current I Bond composite and fixed rates, the applicable purchase limit, and current TIPS auction terms before placing an order.
  5. Document the exit plan. For I Bonds, account for the possible three-month interest penalty before five years. For TIPS, estimate how a sale could be affected by current real yields and market liquidity.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the 4.26% May–October 2026 I Bond composite rate a guaranteed long-term rate.
  • Assuming an I Bond can be cashed whenever an emergency occurs.
  • Assuming a TIPS bought at auction will retain its purchase price if sold early.
  • Ignoring federal tax on TIPS inflation adjustments because no matching cash payment arrived.
  • Using the $10,000 I Bond limit as though it were a household limit rather than a limit stated per Social Security number for electronic purchases.
  • Comparing a direct TIPS with a TIPS fund without accounting for the fund’s duration, fees, trading behavior, and lack of a single maturity date.

Bottom line for different investors

For a saver seeking a simple, inflation-linked reserve with deferred federal taxation and no secondary-market volatility, I Bonds are often the better fit—provided the 12-month lockup and $10,000 annual electronic limit work. For an investor who needs scale, liquidity, regular income, or a 5-, 10-, or 30-year maturity schedule, TIPS are usually more flexible, but their market prices can fall before maturity and their inflation adjustments are generally taxed federally each year.

Recheck TreasuryDirect terms before purchasing: rates, auction yields, tax rules, purchase limits, and procedures can change. The appropriate choice also depends on your jurisdiction, tax bracket, account type, liquidity needs, and time horizon.
