Usually not on purchase price alone. In the U.S. examples listed here, Windows handheld PCs cost more than Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and can cost more than some Xbox Series X configurations. A handheld may still be worth paying extra for if you value portable Windows gaming and access to multiple PC game libraries. Prices below are manufacturer or platform listings, not a complete market survey; check current retailer prices before buying.
How the listed prices compare
These prices apply to the specific U.S. models and configurations shown. They are not a like-for-like performance comparison: Switch 2 is a hybrid console, PS5 and Xbox Series X are dedicated home consoles, and the ROG examples are Windows handheld PCs.

Portability and Windows game access
ASUS describes the Ally X20 as a Windows 11 handheld compatible with multiple game libraries. That flexibility can be valuable if you want a portable PC gaming device or already have games in compatible PC stores. It is a difference in capability, not proof of savings: compatibility and performance can vary by game and launcher.

Your existing library and the games you plan to buy
Before choosing, list the games you already own that you can actually play on the handheld, then compare the prices of the specific games you intend to buy on each platform. Store availability, compatibility, regional pricing, and sales affect the result. No comparable basket of game prices is established here, so there is no defensible universal saving or break-even figure.
Subscriptions and multiplayer
Include a subscription only if you expect to use its specific benefits, such as a game catalog or online multiplayer. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass have multiple plans, but a reliable current U.S. price comparison is not established here. Check the current plan price and the requirements for the particular games you want before adding subscription costs to your budget. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass explain their respective offerings.

Choose by the kind of gaming you want
- Choose a console when: your priority is a lower listed hardware price among these examples, a dedicated living-room setup, or a particular console library.
- Consider a handheld PC when: portability and access to compatible PC game libraries matter enough to justify its listed hardware price.
- Compare before committing when: subscription needs, new-game purchases, storage, or accessories could materially change your budget.
These are decision factors, not claims that one platform performs better or has a lower lifetime cost. A fair total-cost comparison needs your region, exact device configurations, ownership period, existing library, planned games, subscription assumptions, and current prices. Retail offers can differ from the official listings above.
