Bitcoin-mining companies are redirecting some facilities and investment toward AI and high-performance computing (HPC), but the available documents do not verify that the mining assets in this headline belonged to FTX or show who acquired them or how they are being used now. The industry shift is documented; the FTX-specific link is not.
What happened to FTX’s old Bitcoin-mining assets?
The documents reviewed do not establish that the particular Bitcoin-mining assets described as FTX’s were owned by FTX, identify a buyer, or connect those assets to a current AI or HPC operator. Without an estate filing, court-approved sale document, or disclosure from a buyer or operator that links the assets through that chain, their disposition cannot be stated as fact.
That distinction matters because disclosures about other mining companies’ sites do not fill in FTX’s asset history. For example, MARA Holdings’ 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, reports that it acquired two mining sites in January 2024 with 390 MW of nameplate capacity. That figure describes those sites; the filing does not tie them to FTX or establish that they are being used for AI.

Are Bitcoin-mining sites being turned into AI data centers?
Yes, some operators have disclosed plans and activity to redirect facilities or investment toward AI/HPC colocation. The evidence supports an industry trend, not the claim that every former mining site has already become an AI data center.

Core Scientific’s conversion plans and contracts
Core Scientific’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company is reallocating infrastructure and capital from Bitcoin mining to high-density colocation for AI/HPC workloads. It describes facilities being constructed, refurbished, reallocated, or converted and states an intention to convert its portfolio over three years, subject to circumstances. These are company-reported activities and plans—not confirmation that every site has completed conversion.
Core Scientific disclosed HPC contracts with CoreWeave in June 2024 and discussed possible expansion as well as talks with other prospective customers. That disclosure establishes a named customer relationship at that time. It does not, by itself, establish the contracts’ current scope or status.

Other operators’ disclosures
Riot’s 2024 filing said it was evaluating remaining power capacity at its Corsicana site for AI/HPC development. An evaluation is not a completed conversion or a customer contract. MARA’s reported 390 MW acquisition is a separate mining-site transaction, not evidence about FTX or a disclosed AI conversion.
Why are Bitcoin miners pivoting to AI?
Mining operators already work with power-intensive facilities, and access to power, land, and infrastructure can interest companies seeking capacity for AI workloads. Operators may also seek additional or more predictable revenue sources. But the value of a site depends on what it can actually deliver and what must be built or adapted—not simply on its former use as a mining facility.

In June 2024, TIME quoted Core Scientific CEO Adam Sullivan saying: “They have started to buy up mining sites for greater prices than what Bitcoin miners are willing to pay.” This was an executive’s statement in the context of that reporting, not an independently verified price series covering the sector.
Why a mining site is not automatically an AI data center
A Bitcoin-mining facility and a high-density colocation facility serve different computing equipment and workloads. Mining ASICs are purpose-built for Bitcoin mining; their presence does not mean a site has the GPUs, servers, or operating setup needed for AI workloads. Company disclosures describing construction, refurbishment, conversion, and separate capacity for GPU-support systems underscore that transition work can matter as much as access to a powered site.

Core Scientific’s June 2024 investor presentation distinguished capacity serving GPUs from capacity supporting the systems around them. Its allocations were then-current and planned figures from that presentation, not current capacity measurements. For a present-day assessment, readers need newer disclosures that identify what is operational, what is contracted, and what remains planned.

How to assess a mining-to-AI conversion claim
When a company says it is adapting mining infrastructure for AI/HPC, distinguish evidence of a proposal from evidence of a functioning, contracted facility. The most useful questions are:
Best Value
- ✅Premium Aluminum Construction: Constructed from high-quality aluminum for enhanced durability and heat dissipation, ensuring longevity and optimal performance.
- ✅ Accommodates 8 GPUs: Designed to house up to 8 graphics cards, providing ample space for expanding your mining setup and maximizing efficiency.
- ✅ Superior Airflow and Cooling: Engineered with optimized airflow design to prevent overheating and maintain optimal operating temperatures for prolonged mining sessions.
- ✅ Easy Assembly: Simple and straightforward assembly process allows for quick setup, getting you up and running in no time.
- ✅ Sleek and Space-Saving Design: Compact and minimalist design saves space while adding a professional touch to your mining rig setup.
- Power: What capacity is contracted and deliverable, rather than merely proposed or available in principle?
- Facility readiness: Which buildings and infrastructure can be reused, and what construction, refurbishment, or conversion work is still required?
- Workload allocation: How much capacity serves GPUs directly, and how much supports the surrounding systems?
- Customers: Is there a named customer contract, and does the disclosure establish its current scope and status?
- Timing: Is the figure an operational fact, a historical allocation, a plan, or a future target?
The filings and presentation cited above do not establish a comparable independent return-on-investment figure across operators. A conversion plan or a large power-capacity figure alone is not enough to determine whether a site is operationally ready or commercially successful.
What the evidence supports—and what it doesn’t
Company filings and disclosures support the broader story: some miners are pursuing AI/HPC colocation, and Core Scientific had disclosed contracts with CoreWeave in June 2024. They do not establish that FTX owned the assets in question, who acquired them, or whether those specific assets now serve AI workloads. Treat the FTX connection as unverified unless a document directly connects the estate, a sale or transfer, and a current owner or operator.
