Foldable phones can be durable, but durability depends on the exact model, how it was tested, and what happens when something goes wrong. A visible crease is normally part of the flexible display design on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5, and Samsung says its Fold6 and Flip6 were designed for an average of more than 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles. Those statements describe specific products and laboratory or engineering targets—not a guaranteed lifespan for every screen, hinge, or phone, and not a reliable ranking of brands.

For a sensible purchase decision, inspect four things separately: normal crease and hinge behavior, the manufacturer’s test conditions, written warranty exclusions, and the repair and parts situation in your country.

What “durable” means for a foldable phone

A conventional smartphone has few user-operated moving parts. A foldable adds a hinge, a flexible display assembly, protective layers, and a second set of mechanical and electrical interfaces. Durability therefore has several meanings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cycle durability: how many opening and closing movements a design is tested to withstand.
  • Environmental durability: resistance to drops, pressure, moisture, dust or debris under stated test conditions.
  • Functional durability: whether the phone continues to open, close, display an image, register touch, and charge normally.
  • Ownership durability: whether warranty coverage, authorized service, and replacement parts make a failure financially manageable.

A manufacturer’s test result answers only the question it was designed to test. A hinge-cycle figure cannot prove that the inner screen will never fail, while a drop test cannot establish how many openings the hinge will survive. No trustworthy, comparable cross-brand real-world failure-rate statistic is established by the evidence discussed here.

What Samsung’s testing statements establish

In a July 2026 Samsung Mobile Press interview, Samsung executive Sunghoon Moon said the latest Galaxy Z family—Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Flip8—completed more than 100 reliability-validation tests. Samsung described tests involving drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture, and debris. This is useful information about the scope of Samsung’s own validation program, but it is not an independent, long-term ownership study. It does not disclose the percentage of phones that fail after one, three, or five years.

EU ecodesign rules also define particular drop-testing conditions for covered smartphones and impose repair-part obligations in their jurisdiction. Regulatory tests and manufacturer tests should be read as separate evidence, not blended into one durability score.

How many folds can a foldable phone survive?

The Fold6 and Flip6 figure

Samsung Gulf Support says the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 are designed to handle over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. Samsung illustrates that number as more than five years when a user opens and closes the phone 100 times per day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both qualifications matter. “Over 200,000” applies to those named models, and “on average” describes a design target rather than a promise that every individual phone will reach the number. The five-year calculation is Samsung’s usage example, not a warranty period or a guaranteed service life. It also counts a particular motion under test conditions; it does not guarantee that the display, hinge, battery, seals, or other components will all remain healthy for that period.

Why cycle claims are easy to misread

Daily use is not identical to a controlled test. A phone may be opened with grit near the hinge, dropped while partially open, exposed to heat or moisture, or subjected to pressure in a bag. Those events can affect a device independently of the number of cycles. Conversely, a phone that has been opened fewer times can still develop a fault caused by impact, contamination, manufacturing variation, or another component.

When comparing two models, record the model number, the stated cycle target, whether the figure is an average or a minimum, and the conditions attached to it. Do not convert one company’s cycle figure into a universal “foldable lifespan.”

Is a visible crease normal or a defect?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 guidance

Samsung Gulf Support says the crease on the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold5 main screen is a normal characteristic of its flexible Ultra Thin Glass design and cannot be completely eliminated. Samsung states that the crease itself does not affect display quality or performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That guidance is model-specific. A crease’s visibility, shape, and feel can vary with lighting and viewing angle, so cosmetic appearance alone is not a dependable diagnosis. Do not treat Samsung’s Fold5 statement as a rule for every foldable phone from every manufacturer.

Signs that deserve support evaluation

Samsung advises contacting support if a Fold5 crease becomes significantly deeper or uneven. Check function rather than relying only on appearance:

  • Does the entire inner display show a stable image without new lines, dark areas, or dead pixels?
  • Does touch response work across the crease and the rest of the panel?
  • Is brightness consistent rather than flickering or dimming in one section?
  • Does the phone open and close normally without abnormal resistance?
  • Are any layers lifting or separating?

A changing crease combined with touch, image, or opening problems is a reason to stop trying to diagnose the phone by sight and arrange an assessment with the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

What hinge movement and clicking can mean

Samsung’s Fold5 and Flip5 hinge FAQ says subtle curves or bends that are visible in direct light do not, by themselves, indicate a defect. It also says slight movement and clicking or a “snaggy” sensation can result from the hinge’s design and friction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful distinction is functional: a sensation that remains within the model’s stated normal behavior is different from a sensation accompanied by a problem. Arrange service when the hinge becomes progressively harder to move, no longer holds the intended positions, fails to open or close evenly, or is associated with display damage, touch loss, unusual separation, or another functional change.

Do not force a hinge, insert objects into it, or attempt to flatten a crease. The supplied manufacturer guidance does not authorize home hinge surgery, and forcing a mechanism can turn an uncertain symptom into clear physical damage.

What durability tests do—and do not—tell you

Evidence type What it can show What it cannot establish
Fold/unfold cycle test Whether a named design met a stated number of repeated movements under test conditions. A guaranteed life for every phone or for every component.
Drop testing Performance under the specified drop heights, orientations, surfaces, and procedures. Protection from every real-world fall, especially with a different case, angle, or surface.
Pressure testing Response to the loads and locations used by the test program. Immunity from crushing or bending in a pocket, bag, or vehicle.
Moisture or debris testing Results under the manufacturer’s defined exposure and cleaning conditions. A universal water- or dust-proof claim unless the exact model has an applicable rating.
EU regulatory testing Compliance with requirements that apply to covered products sold in the EU. A worldwide durability guarantee or a prediction of failure rates.

Samsung’s 2026 description of more than 100 validation tests and its earlier 200,000-cycle statement are manufacturer evidence. They are valuable for understanding design targets, but they are not independent comparisons between brands or generations.

Warranty and repair exposure can matter more than the cycle number

Read exclusions before you buy

A foldable’s ownership risk includes the cost of a damaged inner screen or hinge. Check the exact model’s written warranty for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the standard warranty length;
  • exclusions for accidental, physical, cosmetic, or liquid damage;
  • whether the inner display and hinge are treated differently from other components;
  • the process for obtaining an inspection and estimate;
  • the country or region in which the terms apply.

Motorola Razr Fold 2026 example in the United States

Motorola’s US support guidance for the Razr Fold 2026 says each Motorola smartphone has a one-year limited warranty. It states that physical or liquid damage is not covered by the standard warranty. The same guidance describes MotoCare options and says repair cost depends on the damage, the service route selected, coverage, and warranty status. Estimates are provided during the repair-submission process.

Questions to ask an authorized service center

  1. Is the inner screen or hinge repair available for this exact model in my country?
  2. What is the inspection fee, if any, and when is a final estimate issued?
  3. Will an accidental-damage plan cover a cracked inner display, hinge damage, or liquid exposure?
  4. Is the replacement part new, refurbished, or unspecified?
  5. What data-backup and device-shipping steps are required?

What EU repair rules add

The consolidated European Union ecodesign regulation cited for smartphones sets specific conditions for foldable-phone drop tests. It also requires certain spare parts to be available to professional repairers for at least seven years after the end of placement on the market, subject to the regulation’s scope and conditions.

This is an EU regulatory requirement, not a worldwide promise of inexpensive repairs or direct consumer access to every part. It does not eliminate labor charges, inspection fees, shipping, or the possibility that a particular repair is uneconomical. Buyers outside the EU should not assume the same parts obligation applies locally.

How to compare two foldable models responsibly

Use a side-by-side worksheet rather than a single durability score. Fill in only values supported for the exact model and region.

Comparison question Record Why it matters
Cycle claim Number, model, date, and whether it is an average, target, or minimum. Prevents a model-specific laboratory figure from being treated as a universal lifespan.
Test scope Drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture, debris, or other named tests. Different tests measure different risks.
Crease guidance Expected appearance and symptoms the manufacturer says require service. Separates normal cosmetic behavior from a functional fault.
Warranty Length, accidental-damage exclusions, liquid exclusions, and region. Shows how much failure risk you carry yourself.
Repair route Authorized location, parts status, estimate process, and turnaround information. A durable design is less useful if a practical repair is unavailable.

If a cell is not stated by the manufacturer or regulator, mark it as “not stated” instead of inferring it from another model.

Pre-purchase checklist for a foldable phone

  1. Identify the exact model and market. Specifications and warranty terms can differ by generation and country.
  2. Read the support page. Look for the model’s description of normal crease depth, hinge movement, and display symptoms.
  3. Separate test categories. Note cycle, drop, pressure, moisture, and debris claims independently.
  4. Price the failure scenario. Obtain a local estimate or repair-policy explanation for an inner-screen and hinge replacement.
  5. Check protection options. Confirm whether accidental damage covers the inner display and hinge, rather than assuming it does.
  6. Verify parts access. Ask who performs the repair and whether parts are currently stocked in your region.
  7. Plan backups. A repair may require handing over the phone or resetting it, so keep an independent copy of important data.

What to do when a problem appears

  1. Record the change. Photograph a new crease, display line, or uneven gap in good lighting and note when it began.
  2. Check basic function. Test opening and closing without force, touch response across the panel, brightness, and visible pixels.
  3. Stop aggravating the mechanism. Do not press the screen flat, pick at a lifting layer, or put tools into the hinge.
  4. Review coverage. Compare the symptom with the written warranty and any accidental-damage plan.
  5. Use an authorized route. Request an inspection and written estimate; do not assume a cosmetic symptom is covered or excluded until the service provider evaluates it.

What current evidence cannot answer

The available manufacturer statements and EU rules do not provide a dependable cross-brand statistic for real-world failure rates. They cannot tell you that one brand or generation will last longer for every owner, nor can they turn a 200,000-cycle design figure into a promise that a particular handset will operate for five years.

They do provide a practical framework: evaluate the exact model’s stated testing, learn which crease and hinge behavior is normal, identify symptoms that require service, and calculate the local cost and availability of repair before purchase.
