Are Firefox extensions safe? They can be, but an extension listing, automated scan, recommendation badge, or high star rating is not a safety guarantee. Mozilla says that even scanning and possible human review do not make an extension absolutely safe.
The practical test is whether the developer, feature description, requested permissions, data practices, and observed behavior fit together. Before installing, ask: What can this extension access, and does that access make sense for the feature I want?
What Firefox’s review process can—and cannot—tell you
Extensions submitted to Mozilla’s Add-ons site (AMO) are scanned for common problems and may also be reviewed by a person. Those steps are useful signals, not a certification. Mozilla Support states: “But neither of these processes guarantee that an extension is absolutely 100% safe.” A clean listing therefore lowers uncertainty without removing the need for your own checks.

Mozilla’s Recommended badge has a narrower meaning. Recommended extensions are selected by Mozilla staff and community members for security, reliable functionality, and user experience, then manually reviewed for policy compliance. Developers cannot pay to enter the program. Extensions made by Firefox are also reviewed for security and policy compliance. These labels indicate additional review, not a promise that an extension can never be compromised, misused, or changed later.

An AMO caution label means Mozilla staff do not regularly review the extension. Mozilla says the label is not an automatic finding that the add-on is unsafe. Treat it as a reason to inspect the developer, permissions, privacy information, and user reports more carefully.
How to read Firefox extension permissions
Permissions describe capability, not intent
During installation, Firefox shows the access an extension is requesting. Permissions indicate what browser data or features the add-on may read or modify; they do not prove what the developer intends to do with that access. A tool that changes page content, manages tabs, or works across many sites may legitimately need broad access.
Judge each request against the feature you are getting. A location request from an extension with no location feature, or access to site data without a clear explanation, deserves scrutiny. The connection is not always obvious, so read the listing and the developer’s explanation before deciding that a broad request is either harmless or malicious.

Some capabilities are optional. Firefox can wait until the extension first tries to use one, then ask whether you want to allow it. You can allow or deny the request and change the choice later in Add-ons Manager. An extension that works for its main purpose without optional access lets you keep that extra capability disabled.

A pre-install safety check
1. Confirm the source and developer
Prefer the official AMO listing when one exists. Check that the developer name, support contact, linked website, description, and stated purpose form a coherent identity. Look for a history of maintaining related extensions rather than relying only on a large installation count.
Extensions can also be distributed outside AMO. If you use one from another source, verify that the download really comes from the developer and has not been repackaged. A store listing or a familiar-looking website still does not guarantee safe code.
2. Match every permission to a feature
Read the installation prompt slowly. For each requested capability, identify the feature that needs it. A password manager may need to interact with login forms; a page translator may need to read the page being translated. If you cannot connect access to a feature, look for an explanation in the listing or privacy policy and ask the developer before installing.
Be especially cautious when an extension requests access to data on all websites, browsing history, tabs, bookmarks, or authentication-related information while advertising a narrow feature. Broad access is not automatically abusive, but unexplained breadth is a reason to choose another tool or leave the extension uninstalled.

3. Read data-collection disclosures
Mozilla policy requires developers to tell users about personal data an extension collects or transmits as part of its functionality. Mozilla groups disclosures into personal data and technical or interaction data. Personal-data examples include browsing activity, website content, search terms, bookmarks, and authentication information.
Firefox’s integrated data-collection display is available for extensions installed on Firefox 140 and later, according to Mozilla’s support documentation. The permission prompt alone may not explain what is collected, where it is sent, how long it is retained, or whether it is shared. Read the extension’s privacy policy and ask whether each category of collection is necessary for the advertised function.
Mozilla announced on October 23, 2025 that new extensions submitted from November 3, 2025 would have to specify personal-data collection or transmission in their manifest so it could be disclosed during installation and in add-on details. The announcement described broader adoption for all extensions as planned for the first half of 2026; it is not confirmation that every older extension has adopted the framework. Legacy listings may therefore provide less standardized information.
4. Use badges and reviews as supporting evidence
Reviews are user opinions, not a security audit. Read several recent comments and look for a pattern: unexplained redirects, new advertisements, excessive resource use, or a feature that changed after an update. One angry review may describe a bug; many independent reports of the same behavior deserve action.

Popularity should not override a permission or privacy mismatch. A highly rated extension can change ownership, add a new data practice, or be compromised after earlier reviews were posted. Conversely, a new extension with few reviews is not proven malicious; it simply provides less history to evaluate.

Warning signs that merit action
Mozilla’s abuse guidance identifies behaviors that go beyond an ordinary defect. Treat the following as reasons to disable the extension, investigate, and possibly report it:
- It collects pages visited or other information without your knowledge, without permission, or when the data is not needed for its feature.
- Its actual data use conflicts with the description or privacy policy.
- It changes your search engine, homepage, or new-tab page without clearly informing you and obtaining the relevant permission.
- It injects unrelated advertisements, redirects searches through an advertising network, or uses a deliberately misleading description.
- It imitates a Firefox or operating-system warning, attempts to steal sensitive information, injects malicious software, or makes itself unusually difficult to uninstall.
- You do not remember installing it, or you were tricked into accepting it.
A disclosed and authorized setting change is different from a hidden one. Likewise, a broken button, slow performance, or a compatibility problem may be a normal bug rather than abuse. Mozilla recommends contacting the developer for ordinary functionality or usability problems; reserve abuse reports for deceptive, unauthorized, or harmful conduct.

Review disabled extensions as well as active ones. An add-on that is currently disabled can still be worth removing if you no longer trust it, and an old entry can be re-enabled accidentally.

- Open the Firefox menu, choose Extensions and themes, then select Extensions. You can also type
about:addonsin a new tab. - Go through every entry. Ask whether you remember installing it and whether you still need its function.
- Open an extension’s details to inspect its description, permissions, privacy information, and AMO reviews.
- If you want to stop it while deciding, use the disable control. Disabling is reversible and prevents it from running.
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or no longer use. Removing eliminates their ability to run in Firefox.
- For optional capabilities, open the detail page, choose Permissions and data, and toggle the optional permissions you do not want. Labels can vary slightly between Firefox releases.
What to do when an extension appears abusive
First disable it so it cannot continue the behavior while you preserve enough information to describe what happened. Note the extension name, developer, version, requested permission, and the exact symptom, such as a changed homepage or a redirect. Remove it if you do not need it.
Mozilla lets users report an extension from Firefox’s extension menu or from its AMO product page. Reports are sent to the Firefox add-ons team. After review, confirmed abuse may result in removal from AMO or a block that prevents the extension from loading. Reporting is appropriate for deceptive installation, unauthorized data collection, hidden setting changes, malicious code, or theft attempts—not merely for a feature that failed once.
A practical decision rule
Install an extension when its developer is identifiable, the requested access is proportionate to a feature you actually need, the data policy is understandable and necessary, and independent user reports do not reveal a conflicting pattern. If one of those elements is unclear, look for a narrower alternative or keep the extension out of the browser.
Recheck installed extensions periodically. Permissions, ownership, privacy policies, and behavior can change after an update, so a decision that was reasonable at installation time is not permanent.
What is not known
Mozilla’s public guidance does not provide a single percentage of extensions that are safe or malicious, and there is no universal safety score. The evidence is procedural: how submissions are scanned, what badges mean, what abuse looks like, and which controls let you inspect or revoke access. Use those checks rather than a made-up risk number.
