Fingerprint smart locks can be secure, but “fingerprint” is not a security guarantee. The answer depends on the specific lock: where enrollment and matching occur, whether data can reach a cloud service, how the maker protects and deletes biometric records, and what backup entry methods remain. A lock that stores data locally reduces some remote-exposure risks, but local storage alone does not prove strong encryption, complete deletion, spoof resistance, or protection against physical extraction.
What a fingerprint smart lock actually stores
A fingerprint lock normally does not need to retain a conventional photograph of your finger. During enrollment, its sensor captures characteristics such as ridge patterns and converts them into a mathematical representation commonly called a biometric template. During a later scan, the lock creates another representation and compares it with the enrolled template.
The practical details vary by product. Documentation may say “fingerprint data,” “fingerprint template,” or simply “stored locally,” without explaining whether the device retains a raw image, a derived template, encrypted records, or several temporary processing files. Unless the manufacturer describes the implementation, you should not assume which representation exists or whether it can be exported.

Biometric characteristics are sensitive because they are tied to you, but they are not secret credentials. NIST states in SP 800-63B-4 that “Biometric characteristics do not constitute secrets.” You cannot change a fingerprint in the way you can replace a password or PIN. If a biometric representation is exposed, the long-term consequences can therefore differ from a compromised code.

Where matching happens: local, cloud, or a combination
Local comparison
With local comparison, the sensor and matching software operate in the lock or an associated device. A local design can limit the amount of biometric information sent over the internet and reduce dependence on a vendor account. It does not eliminate every risk: someone could still attack the lock physically, exploit firmware, compromise an app used for administration, or obtain data through an undocumented export or backup.
Cloud or central comparison
A cloud-connected design may send enrollment or matching information to a remote service, or it may use the cloud for administration while keeping the actual match on the lock. The privacy and security implications differ sharply. Ask whether any fingerprint sample or template leaves the lock, what service receives it, how long it is retained, and whether account deletion also removes device records.
Hybrid designs
Some products keep the template locally but synchronize user names, schedules, audit events, or permissions through an app or hub. That arrangement can still expose account metadata and create an administrative attack path even when the fingerprint itself is not uploaded. Read the privacy policy and technical support documentation for the exact model and firmware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat current guidance says—and what it does not prove
NIST SP 800-63B-4, published in July 2025, treats biometric data as sensitive personal information. It discusses privacy concerns, especially for centrally stored templates, distinguishes local from central comparison, and recommends presentation-attack detection for fingerprint modalities. Those provisions are guidance and requirements for the digital-identity systems within that standard’s scope; they are not a consumer smart-lock certification and do not establish that a particular residential lock complies.
NIST SP 800-63A says identity-proofing services covered by that document should provide clear public information about biometric collection, storage and protection, removal procedures, deletion processes, and retention periods. Use those topics as questions for a lock maker. Do not interpret the identity-proofing rules as a blanket legal requirement for every home lock.
FIPS 201-3 provides a government-credential example in which biometric comparison can occur on a card and specified templates can be non-exportable. That illustrates a privacy-oriented property, not evidence that a consumer product uses the same architecture.

Manufacturer disclosures for two models
The following statements are product-specific disclosures, not independent security test results. They show why you must examine the documentation for the exact lock you intend to install.
| Model | Manufacturer-stated storage and connectivity | Other stated specification | What is not established by the disclosure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Smart Lock U100 | Aqara says up to 50 fingerprints are stored locally and describes end-to-end encryption using 128-bit AES. | Aqara claims 98.6% accuracy; the product page does not state a year for that figure. | No independent test report, complete template format, deletion verification, physical-extraction resistance, or cross-model security result is established. |
| Wyze Lock Bolt | Wyze says codes, schedules, and fingerprint data are stored locally in the lock. It describes the lock as Bluetooth-only with no cloud connection. | Local operation is the central connectivity claim in the support documentation. | No independent assessment, detailed template handling, deletion verification, spoof-resistance result, or firmware-extraction analysis is established. |
A capacity such as 50 enrolled fingerprints tells you how many users or fingers the lock can hold; it is not a measure of security. Likewise, the U100’s 98.6% accuracy is a manufacturer claim for that model, not an independently verified result and not a prediction for other locks.
Does “stored locally” mean your fingerprints are safe?
No. Local storage is a meaningful privacy signal because it may prevent routine transmission to a vendor’s servers, but it answers only one question: where the primary record is intended to reside. It does not by itself establish:
- Whether the record is encrypted at rest and how keys are protected.
- Whether temporary sensor data, logs, backups, or app caches are also retained.
- Whether an attacker with prolonged physical access can read memory or replace firmware.
- Whether the reader detects presentation attacks using molds, lifted prints, photographs, or other artifacts.
- Whether a reset, ownership transfer, or account removal actually erases every copy.
- Whether Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a hub, or the management app introduces a separate vulnerability.
NIST’s recommendation for presentation-attack detection is important because a lock can have excellent data protection yet accept a convincing fake. The reviewed consumer disclosures do not provide an independent test result for this capability.
What happens when you enroll a fingerprint
- Capture: The sensor records one or more scans while you place your finger repeatedly in different positions.
- Feature extraction: Software derives a representation used for matching. The public product pages reviewed do not fully specify whether a raw image is retained alongside that representation.
- Registration: The lock associates the representation with a user slot, name, or permission set. A product may also store schedules or event history.
- Matching: On a later attempt, the lock compares a new scan with enrolled records and either unlocks or rejects the attempt.
- Administration: An app, keypad, Bluetooth connection, hub, or physical controls may allow additions and removals. This administrative channel can be a security boundary even when biometric matching is local.
Ask the maker which of these steps require an account or internet connection. A Bluetooth-only product may still require a phone for setup, while a networked lock may permit remote administration.
How to evaluate a lock before buying
1. Verify the storage location in current documentation
Look for an explicit statement about where fingerprints are enrolled and matched. “Stored locally” is stronger than vague language about secure handling, but ask whether any template, image, backup, diagnostic record, or synchronization data leaves the device.

And the spindle bar is in the vertical position. The thumb turn adjustment arrow points to the center dot and the 'UP' sign, then the arrow is inserted upward on the mounting, you can use a little force to get the rear lock completely in.
2. Map every connection
Record whether the lock uses Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a proprietary hub, a gateway, or a cloud account. Determine which features stop working during an internet outage. A no-cloud claim can reduce remote-service exposure, while a cloud account may enable remote alerts or management; neither description alone determines overall security.
3. Ask what is protected and how
Look for documented encryption at rest, encrypted communications, secure firmware updates, protected key storage, failed-attempt limits, and tamper detection. Treat a named algorithm or key length as a vendor statement unless an independent assessment explains how it is implemented. For example, the U100’s 128-bit AES description does not by itself prove that every related record and key is protected correctly.
4. Demand a deletion and transfer procedure
Before enrolling anyone, find the exact steps for removing one fingerprint, clearing all users, resetting the lock, transferring ownership, and deleting the associated account. Ask whether a factory reset erases templates, event logs, app caches, and cloud records, and whether the maker documents any retention period. If instructions are silent, treat deletion as an unresolved risk rather than assuming it is complete.

5. Check presentation-attack controls
Search the manual for liveness checks, presentation-attack detection, lockout behavior, and testing methodology. “High accuracy” describes recognition performance, not resistance to an imitation. No independent cross-model spoofing statistic is established for the examples above.
6. Confirm fallback entry
Keep a recovery method that does not depend on the fingerprint reader: a physical key, PIN, app credential, or another method supported by the model. Check how that method behaves when batteries are depleted, the sensor is dirty, Bluetooth is unavailable, or the lock is temporarily disabled after failed attempts. A fallback that is easy to guess or permanently exposed may offset the convenience of biometrics.
7. Separate evidence types
Classify each statement as a manufacturer specification, a privacy-policy promise, an independent laboratory test, or a user report. The reviewed Aqara and Wyze material supports their own storage and connectivity claims, but it does not constitute an independent ranking of either product.

Deleting fingerprints safely
Use the model’s documented administrator procedure rather than merely deleting a user in an app. If possible, remove each enrolled finger, clear all users, perform the prescribed ownership transfer or factory reset, and revoke the old account’s access. Then update the firmware and create new administrator credentials before handing the lock to another person.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because public documentation may not reveal every copy, ask support specifically about sensor memory, nonvolatile storage, diagnostic logs, phone caches, hubs, backups, and cloud records. Keep written confirmation of the procedure for a rental, sale, or installation in a property with changing occupants. Do not claim that any consumer lock guarantees irreversible deletion unless the maker documents and verifies it.
Common risk scenarios and practical responses
The lock is sold or transferred
Remove every fingerprint and code, revoke app accounts, reset ownership, and verify that the new owner cannot see prior users or access history. A simple battery removal is not a data-erasure procedure unless the manual says it is.
The phone or administrator account is compromised
Change the account password, revoke sessions, replace shared codes, and review administrator permissions. Local biometric storage does not protect an account that can enroll a new user remotely or change the lock’s settings.
The lock is stolen
Assume an attacker may have unlimited time for physical analysis. Use a strong non-biometric fallback credential, keep firmware current, and ask the manufacturer whether templates are exportable or protected against hardware extraction. The reviewed sources do not establish resistance for either named model.
The fingerprint reader fails
Use the backup key or code, replace batteries as directed, clean the sensor, and check whether the lock imposes a temporary lockout after failed attempts. A fallback plan is part of security because availability matters as much as confidentiality.

Who should avoid relying on fingerprints alone?
Do not make biometrics the only way into a property used by children, guests, cleaners, contractors, emergency responders, or people whose fingerprints may be difficult for the reader to recognize. Provide individually revocable codes or keys instead of sharing one administrator credential. For high-risk buildings or regulated environments, seek an independent locksmith or security assessment rather than treating a consumer specification as certification.
Bottom-line decision framework
Choose a fingerprint lock when its convenience is valuable and its documentation answers the core questions: local versus remote processing, connectivity, protection controls, deletion, presentation-attack defenses, firmware updates, and fallback entry. Prefer the model with clearer, narrower claims over one that uses broad language without explaining implementation. If the maker cannot explain what is stored or how ownership transfer works, select a non-biometric lock or use biometrics only as an optional method alongside a strong code or key.
For the two cited examples, Aqara describes local storage, up to 50 fingerprints, 128-bit AES end-to-end encryption, and 98.6% accuracy for the U100; Wyze describes local storage, Bluetooth-only operation, and no cloud connection for the Lock Bolt. Those are useful starting facts, not proof that either lock is secure in every threat scenario. The decisive evidence is the exact model’s current manual, privacy documentation, update policy, deletion process, and any independent testing you can verify.

Are my fingerprints automatically stored in the cloud when I use a smart lock?
Not necessarily. Storage and matching are model-specific. Some manufacturers state that fingerprints remain in the lock; others may use a cloud service for administration or processing. Check the exact product’s documentation for templates, backups, logs, and account data.
Can I delete a fingerprint from a smart lock?
Most locks provide a user-removal or reset procedure, but the public documentation may not establish whether every copy is erased. Follow the model-specific removal and ownership-transfer steps, and ask about device memory, app caches, hubs, backups, and cloud retention.
Is a fingerprint more secure than a PIN?
Neither is universally safer. A fingerprint is convenient and difficult to share casually, but it cannot be changed after exposure and may be vulnerable to presentation attacks. A long, unique PIN can be replaced, yet it can be observed or guessed. The implementation and your fallback practices determine the result.
