Yes, but mainly as an optional exploration after you understand basic programming ideas. Esoteric programming languages (esolangs) make computation memorable by imposing unusual syntax, severe constraints, strange control flow or artistic rules. They can sharpen curiosity and programming-language awareness, but there is no good evidence that learning one is a shortcut to coding proficiency or that an esolang is a better first language than a beginner-focused environment.

What an esoteric programming language is

An esoteric programming language is designed around an unusual idea, constraint or purpose rather than around making everyday software development convenient. The design may be a puzzle, an artistic medium, a joke, a proof of concept or an experiment in language design. Sebastian Morr’s overview describes entertainment, artistic expression, proof of concept and challenge as recurring motivations.

That goal changes what “useful” means. A language intended to make production work efficient is judged by libraries, tooling, readability and maintainability. An esolang is more often judged by the insight its rules provoke. It can make a familiar assumption visible by removing it, or make a basic computation memorable by turning it into a puzzle.

Singer and Draper’s 2025 essay, “Let’s Take Esoteric Programming Languages Seriously,” argues that esolangs deserve attention for their possible contribution to programming-language awareness, program comprehension, program construction and language design. The essay is an analysis of potential value, not a controlled demonstration that esolang study improves beginners’ coding performance.

Where esolangs can help

Learning goal What an esolang can provide What the evidence supports
Understand how notation shapes thought An unfamiliar set of rules exposes assumptions hidden by mainstream syntax. A plausible educational use discussed by Singer and Draper and by Morr.
Explore computation at a small scale A tiny instruction set can make operations and state changes easier to inspect. Brainfuck is a clear example; this is an instructional possibility, not a measured beginner effect.
Practice tracing and program comprehension Unusual control flow forces deliberate tracing of execution. Befunge provides a strong discussion case; no esolang-specific transfer result was established.
Connect programming with art or language Source code can resemble a performance, poem or visual form. Shakespeare illustrates this artistic and representational possibility.
Build practical software quickly Usually little advantage, because esolangs intentionally sacrifice convenience. The reviewed sources do not present esolangs as productive development tools.

The defensible conclusion is therefore narrow: an esolang can be useful when it serves a specific question, puzzle or creative project. It is not established as a general replacement for a well-designed introductory course.

What different esolangs expose

Brainfuck: minimal operations

Brainfuck uses eight characters and is Turing-complete, according to Morr’s overview. Its tiny instruction set makes a useful thought experiment: how much computation can emerge from a very small vocabulary? A learner can trace a pointer, alter a memory cell and observe how repeated operations build a result. The educational value lies in discussing state, operations and representation, not in adopting Brainfuck for ordinary applications.

Brainfuck is often the most approachable example to show after a learner knows what variables, loops and input or output are. Without those concepts, the notation can become an exercise in decoding symbols rather than an explanation of computation.

INTERCAL: questioning conventional assumptions

INTERCAL deliberately differs from conventional programming languages. Those differences make language-design assumptions visible: what should a command look like, how explicit should an operation be, and how much friction can a language impose before a simple task becomes difficult? It is valuable for discussion and experimentation, but its unconventional behavior is not a reason to treat it as a practical first language.

Befunge: two-dimensional control flow

Befunge uses a two-dimensional program layout. Control can move through that layout in ways that are unlike the mostly linear source files beginners first encounter. This makes Befunge a good prompt for drawing execution paths and asking how a reader can predict the next instruction. The activity is most effective when the learner already understands ordinary sequencing and branching.

Malbolge: difficulty as a design objective

Malbolge is designed to be extremely difficult. That makes it a striking example for conversations about constraints, obfuscation and the boundary between “possible to run” and “reasonable to understand.” It is a poor first language because the difficulty itself can overwhelm the underlying programming idea.

Shakespeare: source code as artistic form

Shakespeare presents source text in a play-like style. It can support discussion of syntax, representation and artistic goals: code does not have to look like conventional punctuation-heavy source to express a computational process. The point is not that a theatrical syntax is easier, but that language design can communicate with audiences for reasons beyond execution efficiency.

These examples do not form a universal progression. No reviewed source establishes one “best” starter esolang. Choose the language according to the concept the learner wants to explore, and keep the experiment small enough that notation does not obscure that concept.

What research actually shows

The strongest numerical evidence in the reviewed material concerns programming education in general, not esoteric languages. A 2019 meta-analysis by Ronny Scherer, Fazilat Siddiq and Bárbara Sánchez Viveros examined 105 studies and 539 effect sizes on cognitive transfer from learning computer programming. It reported an overall transfer effect of g = 0.49, with a 95% confidence interval of [0.37, 0.61]. The analysis also found larger effects in studies with untreated control groups than in studies with treated control groups.

Those findings should not be relabeled as an esolang result. The studies did not isolate Brainfuck, Befunge, INTERCAL or another esolang, so they cannot show that an esolang causes the reported effect. They indicate that programming education can be associated with transfer across the broader body of instruction studied.

The reviewed literature does not establish a controlled comparison of esoteric languages against Python, Scratch or another first-language option. It therefore cannot justify claims that esolangs improve coding skill faster, improve general intelligence, or reliably transfer to mainstream languages. The responsible claim is that they offer targeted exploratory activities whose broader learning benefits remain unproven.

Why an esolang is usually a poor first language

Beginners must learn several things at once: how a program executes, how to represent data, how to test a hypothesis, how to read an error and how to persist through a failed attempt. An esolang can add a second challenge—deciphering its notation or arbitrary constraints—before the learner has a stable mental model of programming.

The 2023 Dagstuhl report “Educational Programming Languages and Systems” describes beginner-oriented language and environment design as an effort to reduce complexity and frustration while staging learning around pedagogical goals. That principle matters more for a first sustained experience than novelty does.

MIT’s Scratch team states that learning to code in Scratch teaches “important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas.” Scratch is a specific example of an environment designed around those aims, not evidence that every visual or beginner language is superior in every situation. The useful contrast is design intent: a novice environment is built to support feedback and manageable projects, while an esolang is commonly built to emphasize an unusual constraint.

A learner can therefore enjoy an esolang before learning a mainstream language, but should not assume that order is optimal. If the learner has no experience with variables, conditions, loops or debugging, a structured beginner environment will usually make those ideas easier to encounter.

How to use an esolang productively

  1. Choose one question. Decide whether the activity is about minimal instruction sets, control flow, obfuscation, syntax or artistic representation. Do not begin with the vague goal of “becoming better at coding.”
  2. Learn the smallest required vocabulary. Read only enough documentation to identify the language’s operations, input and output model, and stopping condition. Keep a short reference beside the exercise.
  3. Start with a trace, not a large project. Follow a tiny program by hand. Record the current instruction, relevant state and next step. This separates understanding execution from fighting a long source file.
  4. Translate the idea into familiar terms. After tracing, describe what the program is doing using concepts such as a variable, loop, branch, pointer or state transition. This is the bridge to a conventional language.
  5. Change one constraint. Modify one instruction or one movement rule and predict the result before running it. The prediction-and-check cycle provides feedback without requiring a substantial project.
  6. Stop when the concept is clear. An esolang activity has done its job when the learner can explain the targeted idea. More frustration is not automatically deeper learning.

For teaching, an instructor can pair a short esolang demonstration with the same algorithm in a beginner-oriented language. The comparison should focus on what each notation makes easy or difficult, not on declaring one language universally better.

Should you learn an esoteric language before Python?

Usually, no. If your goal is to build applications, automate work, prepare for a course or gain a transferable foundation, start with a language and environment that provide readable examples, useful feedback and projects at your level. Python is one possible mainstream choice, but the general principle does not depend on a particular language.

Learning an esolang first can make sense when your immediate goal is curiosity, language design, puzzle solving or artistic experimentation. In that case, treat it as a short side path. Learn enough conventional programming concepts to interpret what the esolang is doing, then return to a mainstream language where you can practice decomposition, testing, libraries and maintainable code.

The key distinction is sequencing around your goal. An esolang before a mainstream language is an optional creative detour; it is not a proven prerequisite.

  • What should I understand afterward? Name one idea, such as state, control flow or syntax.
  • How much notation is genuinely new? If every symbol and execution rule is unfamiliar, reduce the program size or choose a less demanding example.
  • What do I already know? A learner who has never traced a loop needs a different entry point from someone studying language design.
  • Where will feedback come from? Use an interpreter, a worked example or an instructor who can explain an unexpected result. Running code without understanding the output is not a learning plan.
  • Can I connect the experiment to a conventional idea? If you cannot explain the result in ordinary programming terms, the activity may be testing memorization rather than understanding.

These are practical criteria inferred from the sources’ descriptions of esolang goals and novice-oriented design; they are not a validated scoring system.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Confusing difficulty with learning

A language that takes hours to decode may feel intellectually demanding without teaching a transferable concept. Define the target idea first and stop when you can explain it.

Assuming Turing-complete means beginner-friendly

Brainfuck’s computational completeness says what it can express, not how easy it is to read, debug or use. Expressive power and pedagogical suitability are different properties.

Measuring success by a clever demo

Producing an impressive output can demonstrate persistence or knowledge of a trick. Ask the learner to trace the program, alter it and explain why the change worked. Explanation is stronger evidence of understanding than spectacle alone.

Expecting automatic transfer to mainstream coding

The general programming-education meta-analysis cannot establish transfer from an esolang specifically. Practice the conventional representation of the same idea if transfer is your goal.

Letting the puzzle replace feedback

When a notation is deliberately obscure, learners need small checkpoints. Use short traces, predictions and explanations instead of assigning a large program and waiting for a mysterious failure.

Bottom line

Esoteric programming languages are useful as focused experiments: they can reveal how syntax, constraints, control flow and representation influence the way we think about programs. Brainfuck, INTERCAL, Befunge, Malbolge and Shakespeare each expose a different design choice. Their value is strongest when a learner already has basic programming ideas and uses one to investigate a clear question.

They are not proven first languages, and the available evidence does not show that studying an esolang reliably improves general coding proficiency. Start with a beginner-oriented environment for a foundation, then use an esolang as a puzzle, comparison or creative project when its unusual rules illuminate something you want to understand.
