Sometimes, but not universally. Electric cars can be heavier than comparable petrol or diesel cars, and greater mass can increase tyre abrasion. However, tyre pollution also depends on tyre design, vehicle size, load, acceleration, braking, road surface, temperature, wetness and how particles are measured. Current evidence supports qualified comparisons—not the blanket claim that every electric vehicle creates more tyre pollution.

What “worse tyre pollution” actually means

Tyre pollution is material shed as tyres abrade against the road. It includes rubber, fillers, polymers and other tyre ingredients that become larger road particles, fine particulate matter and microplastic contamination. The phrase “worse” can refer to several different measurements:

  • Tyre material loss: the mass of tread and tyre material worn away.
  • Tyre-wear PM10 or PM2.5: particles small enough to fall within those aerodynamic size classes.
  • Total non-exhaust particulate matter: tyre wear combined with brake wear, road-surface wear and resuspended road dust.
  • All vehicle pollution: a much broader category that may also include exhaust and upstream emissions.

Those measures are not interchangeable. An electric car has no tailpipe exhaust during battery-powered operation, and regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake wear. Neither fact eliminates tyre abrasion, and neither proves that an electric car has higher or lower total particulate pollution in every use case.

What the strongest comparisons show

The OECD’s 2020 analysis modeled non-exhaust emissions for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and internal-combustion-engine (ICE) equivalents. It did not perform a universal, tyre-only road test of every EV. Its results vary with vehicle class, assumed mass and particle metric.

OECD modeled result What it means
5–19% less non-exhaust PM10 per kilometre for EVs across modeled vehicle classes A combined estimate covering non-exhaust sources, not a universal tyre-only result
11–13% lower PM2.5 for lightweight EV scenarios The modeled EV is only modestly heavier than its ICE counterpart
3–8% higher PM2.5 for heavier EV scenarios The modeled EV’s extra mass outweighs other modeled differences for this metric
4–6% greater mass for short-range BEV scenarios OECD assumption across modeled passenger-car, SUV and light-commercial classes
34–41% greater mass for long-range BEV scenarios Scenario assumption reflecting larger batteries; it does not describe every EV sold

The OECD therefore illustrates why a single headline is misleading: the same broad technology can produce a lower estimate for one pollutant metric and a higher estimate for another when vehicle mass and range assumptions change. The report explains its estimates and methodology in its executive summary and its analysis of electric-vehicle uptake.

What the newer California inventory factor says

California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) uses a more recent inventory assumption in the EMFAC2025 tyre-wear documentation. For light-duty zero-emission vehicles, it applies an average tyre-wear particulate rate 15% higher than the combustion-vehicle comparison. CARB says the adjustment is based on 40 sets of tests cited from four earlier studies.

That is useful evidence that an agency inventory can assign higher average tyre-wear emissions to zero-emission vehicles. It does not mean every EV wears tyres 15% faster, or that every EV-tyre-road combination produces 15% more particles. The figure is an average emission-rate adjustment for the inventory’s fleet categories. CARB also says the factor may change as additional research becomes available.

Why extra weight can increase tyre wear

A heavier vehicle places greater normal force on its tyres. When a tyre transmits driving, braking and cornering forces to the road, more load can increase the energy dissipated in the contact patch and accelerate tread wear. The relationship is not necessarily a simple one-to-one percentage: the OECD estimates tyre-wear factors with both linear and power-law relationships drawn from available studies, while noting that some quantitative relationships are not robust.

Battery capacity is the main reason a long-range EV can be substantially heavier than a similarly sized ICE car. But an EV’s actual mass depends on battery size, body style, equipment, payload and the vehicle chosen as its comparator. Comparing a compact petrol hatchback with a large electric SUV tests vehicle class and size as much as propulsion technology.

Variables that can matter as much as propulsion

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) review identifies several interacting causes of tyre abrasion. Its 2023 publication record states that tyre abrasion contributes an estimated 5–30% of road-transport particulate-matter emissions and about 5% of total ambient PM. Those figures describe road traffic as a whole, not EVs specifically, and the review emphasizes large variability.

Tyre construction and condition

Tread compound, carcass design, inflation pressure, alignment, wheel size and remaining tread all influence wear. A tyre approved for a heavy vehicle may be built differently from one fitted to a lightweight car. There is no general evidence that a tyre marketed for an EV automatically emits less; fitment, load rating and the manufacturer’s approved dimensions remain the practical priorities.

Vehicle load and suspension

Passengers, luggage and towing add load even when the vehicle itself is unchanged. Uneven loading, worn suspension components or poor wheel alignment can concentrate abrasion on part of the tread and overwhelm a small average difference between propulsion types.

Driving style

Hard acceleration, emergency braking, high-speed cornering and repeated stop-start driving increase tyre forces. Electric motors can deliver strong torque immediately, so an aggressive launch consumes tread faster than a gentle launch. Smooth acceleration and anticipation of traffic reduce both tyre slip and energy use.

Road and weather

Surface texture, potholes, aggregate, road temperature, wetness and dust affect the contact between tyre and road. Traffic density and route geometry also change how often a vehicle accelerates, brakes and corners. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) lists acceleration, braking, road temperature, wetness, traffic and vehicle weight among the factors in its electrified-vehicle tyre-abrasion work.

How to make a fair EV-versus-ICE comparison

If you need to compare two specific cars, use the following sequence rather than relying on a generic “EVs are heavier” claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match the vehicle class and size. Compare a compact EV with a compact ICE car, or two similarly sized SUVs. Record each vehicle’s kerb mass and permitted gross mass.
  2. Match the battery and range category. Note whether the EV is a short-range model or a long-range version with a larger battery. Do not generalize a long-range scenario to the entire EV market.
  3. Record tyre specifications. Compare tyre size, load index, speed rating, compound information where available, inflation pressure and tread depth. Use tyres approved by the vehicle manufacturer.
  4. Control the load and route. Keep occupants, cargo, towing, road type, speed profile and weather as similar as possible.
  5. Define the pollutant metric. Decide whether you are comparing tread mass lost, tyre particles, PM10, PM2.5 or all non-exhaust PM. A result for one metric cannot be presented as a result for all of them.
  6. Identify the evidence type. Label the result as a model estimate, fleet inventory factor, laboratory test or real-road measurement. These methods answer different questions.
  7. Report uncertainty. Include the test conditions, sample size and age of the emission factors. Avoid turning an average into a guaranteed percentage for an individual driver.

Keep tyre, brake, road and exhaust particles separate

Source What produces it How EVs affect the comparison
Tyre wear Abrasion of tread and tyre materials on the road Can rise with mass and demanding driving; still depends on tyre, road and weather
Brake wear Friction material removed from brake pads and discs Regenerative braking can reduce use of friction brakes, especially in suitable driving conditions
Road wear Material removed from the road surface May respond to axle loads, vehicle class and road conditions
Resuspended dust Existing road dust lifted back into the air by passing traffic Depends on dust loading, weather, traffic and vehicle movement; it is not tyre wear itself
Exhaust Tailpipe combustion emissions Absent at the tailpipe during battery-electric operation, but outside the tyre-wear measurement

The OECD’s lower modeled PM10 result and higher modeled PM2.5 result for heavier EV scenarios are not contradictory once these definitions are kept separate. They show why “EVs make more pollution” is too vague to be technically useful.

Why published numbers still have wide uncertainty

The JRC review notes that many tyre-particle emission factors in the literature rely on data collected before 2000. Tyre formulations, vehicle fleets, road surfaces and measurement equipment have changed since then. Older factors can still be useful for modeling trends, but they should not be treated as precise measurements of a current model.

Measurement practice is still developing. The UK Department for Transport’s project page, updated on 13 November 2025, describes phase-two laboratory and road testing of brake- and tyre-wear measurement prototypes. The work is intended to improve how emissions are measured under controlled and real-world conditions; it is not a universal ranking of EVs and ICE vehicles.

KIT is also developing test-rig and simulation methods for forecasting tyre abrasion from electrified delivery vehicles. These projects indicate that researchers are working toward more comparable procedures rather than that a final, universally accepted EV penalty has already been established.

What Euro 7 tyre rules change

KIT reports staged Euro 7 tyre-abrasion limits for new tyre types: passenger cars from 1 July 2028, light-commercial vehicles from 1 April 2030, and heavy commercial vehicles and buses from 1 April 2032. The dates are reported by KIT; manufacturers and fleet operators should check the final applicable legal text before making a compliance decision.

These limits are technology-neutral requirements for tyres, not proof that one drivetrain is inherently cleaner. They may encourage lower-abrasion designs across both electric and combustion vehicles, while the real-world outcome will still depend on fitment, maintenance, loading and driving.

What drivers can do to reduce tyre particles

  • Maintain the cold inflation pressure specified for the vehicle and adjust it for heavy loads when the handbook requires it.
  • Check alignment and suspension after pothole impacts or when the steering pulls and the tread wears unevenly.
  • Accelerate, corner and brake smoothly; use regenerative braking progressively rather than treating it as a reason to drive aggressively.
  • Rotate or replace tyres according to the vehicle and tyre maker’s schedule, and replace them before tread or structural damage becomes unsafe.
  • Choose the correct approved size, load index and speed rating. A higher load rating alone is not evidence of lower emissions.
  • Reduce unnecessary cargo and avoid towing loads beyond the vehicle’s rating, since extra mass increases tyre forces.

These actions reduce avoidable abrasion regardless of drivetrain. They do not turn a heavy vehicle into a light one, but they can matter more to an individual car’s tyre life than a fleet-average percentage.

The practical verdict

Weight is a real contributor to tyre wear, so a heavy, long-range electric SUV driven hard can produce more tyre particles than a lighter petrol car. Yet the evidence does not justify saying that electric cars universally cause worse tyre pollution because they weigh more. OECD modeling found 5–19% lower non-exhaust PM10 for EVs across its vehicle classes, while its PM2.5 estimates were 11–13% lower for lightweight EV scenarios and 3–8% higher for heavier ones. CARB’s EMFAC2025 inventory uses a 15% higher average tyre-wear rate for zero-emission vehicles, but treats that as an updateable fleet factor rather than a rule for every EV.

The most defensible comparison is therefore vehicle-specific: match mass, class, tyres, load, route and driving conditions; name the particle metric; and state whether the number comes from a model, inventory, laboratory test or road measurement. Until measurement methods and newer data converge, “heavier EVs may increase tyre abrasion” is supportable, while “all EVs are worse for tyre pollution” is not.
