Sometimes—but only when a measured GPU hotspot is the limit on sustained performance. Diamond-enhanced cold plates can reduce local thermal resistance and create more temperature or power headroom, yet public evidence does not establish a general payback case. The premium price is not publicly disclosed, and the largest published temperature, tokens-per-watt and profitability improvements are vendor claims rather than independently audited fleet results. Treat the technology as a targeted engineering upgrade, not an automatic replacement for a conventional direct-to-chip plate.
What “diamond-enhanced” means in a cold plate
The term covers several different designs. They should not be compared as if they were one product category.
Diamond material over the hotspot
Frore Systems describes LiquidJet DIAMOND as a copper cold plate with diamond embedded directly above GPU hotspots and a multi-stage, short-loop flow architecture. Its product page states: “Diamond is embedded in the bottom surface of the coldplate, placed directly above the hotspots.” This is a material added to the heat path, not a decorative coating. The page gives a customized NVIDIA GB300 configuration measuring 104.6 mm × 62 mm × 20.4 mm. The design and performance figures are manufacturer statements, not an independently published test protocol. Frore Systems product details

Element Six describes copper-diamond composite as a material for heat spreaders, inserts in cold plates and lids. It says the composite has thermal conductivity of more than twice that of copper and a coefficient-of-thermal-expansion match closer to common semiconductor materials. Those are supplier material and application claims; they do not by themselves establish a system-level gain on a deployed AI server. Element Six thermal-management materials

Diamond-shaped pin fins
A March 2026 paper in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer uses “diamond-shaped” to describe the geometry of pin fins in copper and copper-tungsten cold plates. In that context, diamond refers to the fin shape. The plates did not contain diamond material, so the results cannot be cited as proof that a diamond insert or spreader improves cooling. Package-level diamond substrates
Diamond Foundry presents another architecture: a single-crystal-diamond substrate combined with direct jet cooling at the package level. Its examples reinforce that “diamond cooling” can refer to a substrate, a cold-plate insert, a spreader or a fin geometry. Operating figures on that page are vendor-described cases, not a common benchmark for every diamond-enhanced plate. Package-level cooling examples
| Approach | Where diamond appears | What the evidence can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Hotspot insert | Embedded in the cold plate above a GPU hotspot | Shows a specific product architecture; performance still requires an independent, matched comparison. |
| Cu-diamond composite | Heat spreader, insert or lid | Shows material-property and packaging rationale; not a fleet payback result. |
| Diamond-shaped fins | Pin-fin geometry only | Supports a geometry improvement, not a diamond-material claim. |
| Diamond substrate with jets | Package heat spreader or substrate | Demonstrates a distinct package-level implementation. |
Why hotspots matter more than average GPU temperature
AI accelerators concentrate heat in a few compute, memory or interconnect regions. A cold plate can have a reasonable average temperature while one local area reaches the limit that triggers clock reduction, power capping or reliability protection. A high-conductivity insert placed over that area can shorten the lateral spreading path before coolant carries heat away.

The relevant quantity is chip-to-coolant thermal resistance, commonly expressed as temperature rise per unit heat. Lower resistance can provide temperature margin at the same power, permit a higher sustained power map at the same junction temperature, or reduce coolant and fan or pump work for the same output. It does not guarantee that tokens per watt will improve by the same percentage: accelerator efficiency also depends on voltage, frequency, software utilization, memory traffic, networking and the rest of the cooling loop.
Diamond is most useful when lateral spreading through copper, the interface material or the package is the dominant bottleneck. If the limiting step is facility-water temperature, inadequate flow through the manifold, a poor thermal interface, or a server power limit, changing the plate material may produce little usable benefit.
What published evidence actually shows
Peer-reviewed fin-geometry result
The 2026 heat-transfer study reports approximately 15% lower thermal resistance for diamond-shaped pin-fin designs than for a conventional straight-fin microchannel. Its best reported plate reached 6.9 K/kW for copper and 9.0 K/kW for copper-tungsten at a 1 kW heat load and a 9.0 kPa inlet-to-outlet pressure drop, using water. These are controlled study results for pin geometry and plate material. They are not measurements of a diamond insert, a GPU package or an AI workload.

Frore’s product-page comparison
Frore says LiquidJet DIAMOND delivers more than 150% higher maximum hotspot power density, 75% higher heat-transfer efficiency, 16–22°C cooler GPU temperatures and 30–35% more AI tokens per watt than multi-inlet skived plates. The reviewed product page does not publish an independent protocol, raw comparative dataset, sample size or uncertainty analysis. Use these numbers as vendor claims that require validation on the target accelerator and workload.

What it may cost—and what is still unknown
No public source reviewed gives the purchase premium for a diamond-enhanced plate, a Cu-diamond insert or a package-level diamond substrate. Without that price, a definitive payback period is impossible.

IDTechEx estimates ordinary cold plates at about US$300–500 each and gives representative rack-level thermal content of approximately US$56,880. The rack figure includes more than the plate: hoses, fittings, quick disconnects, manifolds and coolant-distribution hardware. These are analyst estimates, not quotes for a diamond product or a particular server design. IDTechEx cost analysis
Build the business case from incremental installed cost, not plate price alone. Include machining or composite fabrication, qualification samples, revised manifolds, pump capacity, controls, spare inventory, service labor, downtime during retrofit and any warranty or package-qualification work. Then value only benefits that your workload can capture: additional sustained accelerator output, avoided power caps, reduced pump or chiller energy, higher rack density or deferred facility expansion.

When a diamond upgrade is most likely to pay
- A measured hotspot is the binding constraint. Thermal maps or telemetry should show a local junction limit while coolant temperature and delivered flow remain within design targets.
- The workload is sustained. Long training runs, inference batches or other steady jobs can monetize thermal headroom; a short burst may not.
- Power headroom has economic value. Extra usable accelerator power must translate into more completed work, not merely a higher setting.
- The rest of the loop can support it. Pumps, manifolds, quick disconnects, coolant chemistry and facility heat rejection must handle the proposed flow and heat load.
- The package is qualified. The insert, TIM stack, lid, substrate and mounting loads must be compatible with the exact accelerator package.
- You can run an A/B pilot. A matched comparison on the production workload is more reliable than extrapolating conductivity or a vendor demo.
When it is unlikely to be worth the premium
- The facility coolant arrives too warm or the chiller is already at capacity; a lower-resistance plate cannot lower inlet temperature.
- Flow is maldistributed, a manifold is restrictive, or pump power is the dominant cooling cost.
- The thermal interface material, package lid or mechanical contact is worse than the plate itself.
- The accelerator is power-limited by firmware, the board or the rack before its hotspot reaches a thermal limit.
- Workloads are bursty enough that the existing plate already handles their sustained average.
- The diamond design requires a custom service process whose downtime and spare cost exceed the recovered capacity value.
How to evaluate one on your hardware
- Freeze the baseline. Record the exact GPU or accelerator, package revision, cold-plate design, TIM, mounting torque, coolant type, inlet temperature, flow rate, pressure drop, ambient conditions, power map and firmware.
- Map the thermal limit. Capture peak hotspot temperature and chip-to-coolant thermal resistance during a long, repeatable workload. Log clocks, power, throttling events, throughput and pump power, not temperature alone.
- Demand comparable vendor data. Ask for the baseline configuration, sample size, test duration, coolant and ambient conditions, uncertainty, pressure-drop curve, hotspot location and independent replication behind any claimed temperature or tokens-per-watt delta.
- Install a controlled A/B sample. Keep GPU, workload, software, inlet coolant temperature, flow rate, heat load and mounting procedure matched. Use multiple samples if manufacturing variation could matter.
- Measure the complete system. Compare peak and average temperatures, thermal resistance, pressure drop, pump electrical power, sustained output per watt, throttling time, coolant cleanliness and service observations.
- Run reliability checks. Inspect for leaks, corrosion, particle generation, seal degradation, thermal cycling effects and connector wear. Confirm warranty and field-replacement procedures before scaling.
- Calculate total cost of ownership. Convert measured throughput, energy and capacity changes into annual value. Subtract the incremental plate and integration cost, added pump or control energy, maintenance, spares and downtime. Use conservative and sensitivity cases for utilization, electricity price and accelerator life.
- Scale only after replication. Repeat the result across representative servers and workload phases. A single demonstration at an extreme heat flux is not evidence that every rack will achieve the same return.
Measurements that belong in the acceptance test
| Category | Required measurement | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal | Peak hotspot temperature, chip-to-coolant resistance and sustained temperature over the full workload | Shows whether the local limit moved and whether the gain persists. |
| Hydraulic | Flow rate, inlet-to-outlet pressure drop and pump electrical power | A thermally better plate can lose system value if it consumes disproportionate pumping energy. |
| Performance | Completed tokens or other workload output per watt, clock stability and throttle duration | Connects thermal change to useful AI work rather than a sensor-only improvement. |
| Integration | Package fit, TIM thickness, mounting force, manifold compatibility and coolant chemistry | Prevents a plate benefit from being offset by interface or mechanical problems. |
| Reliability | Leak, corrosion, particle, seal, thermal-cycle and service results | Captures costs that do not appear in a short thermal demonstration. |
| Economics | Incremental installed cost, energy change, capacity value, spares and downtime | Produces a fleet-specific payback instead of a material-property assumption. |
Common interpretation errors
Confusing conductivity with system efficiency
A material can conduct heat exceptionally well while the complete plate is limited by fin geometry, coolant distribution, contact resistance or pressure drop. Evaluate the assembled cold plate at equal heat load and flow conditions.

- √Processing: Pure copper
- √Internal flow channel extrusion forming, brazing parts into a whole
- √Internal fin thickness 0.5MM,Leak rate of less than 5X10-6 mbar.l/s parts

Equating a cooler junction with proportional tokens per watt
Lower temperature may allow more power or prevent throttling, but software utilization and voltage-frequency behavior determine how much extra work is delivered. Measure the workload output directly.
Comparing unmatched operating points
A claim made at a different coolant temperature, flow rate, heat flux, accelerator power map or pressure drop is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Normalize those variables before assigning value.
Ignoring the rack-level thermal path
The cold plate is one component in a loop that includes interfaces, hoses, fittings, manifolds, pumps, controls and facility heat rejection. A plate upgrade cannot cure a restriction elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing a demonstration as a deployment forecast
The 2,300 W Rubin demonstration and 770 W/cm² hotspot figure show an announced operating case. They do not establish purchase price, service life, availability or profitability for your fleet.
Decision rule
Proceed to a pilot when your measurements show that hotspot temperature or hotspot-limited power is reducing sustained AI output, the proposed plate fits the package and loop, and the value of recovered capacity can exceed the undisclosed premium and integration costs. Otherwise, first correct coolant temperature, flow distribution, TIM installation, manifold restrictions or power-policy limits. Public evidence supports diamond-enhanced cooling as a plausible solution for a narrow thermal bottleneck—not as a universally economical upgrade.
