Decorative LED lights use far less electricity than comparable incandescent strands, but that does not make them safe to leave on while you sleep or are away. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports that LED holiday strands consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent strands. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) nevertheless advise turning off all light strings and decorations before bed or before leaving home.
Choose a safety-tested strand rated for its location, inspect every set before installation, keep decorations away from heat sources, and discard any set with damaged wiring, sockets or connections.
How much energy do decorative LED lights use?
LED strands are generally the lower-energy choice when the comparison is with incandescent holiday strands of similar purpose. In a December 16, 2015 article, the DOE said LED holiday light strands consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent light strands. That is a comparison of holiday strands, not a guarantee for every decorative light product, bulb count or power supply.
The DOE illustrated the difference with a six-foot tree lit for 12 hours per day over 40 days. In that scenario, the LED lights cost about $0.27 to operate, compared with about $10 for incandescent lights. Those are DOE’s 2015 illustrative figures, not a current universal electricity price. Your result depends on the string’s actual wattage, how many hours it runs and the electricity rate in your area.

Why the percentage matters
A lower wattage means less electricity is consumed each hour the strand is operating. The saving accumulates over a season, especially when a display contains several strings or runs for many hours each day. Turning the lights off when they are not needed reduces consumption further, regardless of whether the strands are LED or incandescent.
Calculate the cost for your own display
Use the rating printed on the adapter, power supply or strand. Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by operating hours, then multiply by your local price per kilowatt-hour:
cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours used × electricity rate

If a timer changes the daily schedule, use the timer’s actual on-time rather than the number of hours the display is visible. This approach is more reliable than applying the DOE’s 2015 dollar example to a current bill.
Does lower energy use make LED lights safe to leave on?
No. Energy efficiency answers how much electricity a strand uses; it does not certify that a particular product can operate unattended. A damaged wire, loose connection or internal fault can still create an electrical-shock or fire hazard. Product condition, construction, installation and location all matter.

The CPSC’s 1998 holiday safety release states: “Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.” NFPA’s 2025 Winter Holiday Safety sheet gives the same practical instruction: “Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.” Treat these as general precautions for decorative lighting, including LED sets.
Neither agency’s guidance says that an LED strand is automatically suitable for unattended operation. Do not infer a safety clearance from the LED label, a low-wattage rating or a claim that a strand stays cool. Follow the product’s instructions and the conservative advice to switch it off whenever nobody is present to notice a problem.

What to check before buying or using a strand
Look for recognized safety testing
CPSC advises: “Whether indoors or outside, use only decorative light strands that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory.” Look for the testing information on the packaging and product documentation, and make sure the marking applies to the actual strand or power unit you are buying. A mark is not a substitute for inspection; a damaged product should not be used even if it originally carried a testing mark.
Inspect new and stored sets
Examine the entire set before plugging it in. CPSC specifically calls out:
- Broken or cracked sockets.
- Frayed, cut or bare wires.
- Loose connections.
Check the plug, inline controller, adapter and the point where the cord enters each component as well as the visible cable between bulbs. If you find damage, do not energize the strand to “test” it. Discard the set rather than improvising a repair.

Consider construction features for plug-in seasonal products
For covered 120-volt, plug-connected temporary-use seasonal and decorative products, CPSC identifies minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief and overcurrent protection as relevant safety characteristics. Its guidance says a product lacking any one of these characteristics presents a risk of electrical shock or fire. These characteristics are product-construction considerations, not a reason to keep using a set that has subsequently been damaged.
Indoor and outdoor installation requirements
Use the location rating on the product
Indoor and outdoor strands are not interchangeable by assumption. Use outdoor lighting only when the product label confirms outdoor suitability. Keep an indoor-only set inside, even if it appears physically robust. If the packaging or instructions do not clearly state the permitted location, choose a product with an explicit rating rather than guessing.
Connect outdoor displays to GFCI-protected circuits
CPSC advises connecting outdoor electric lights and decorations to circuits protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). A GFCI is intended to interrupt power when it detects a ground-fault condition. Use the protection required by the installation and follow the product instructions; do not defeat a GFCI that trips repeatedly. Repeated trips indicate that the circuit, connection or equipment needs attention before the display is used again.
Protect cords and connections from the setup itself
Route cables so they are not pinched, sharply bent or placed where people will walk on them. Keep connectors elevated or otherwise positioned as directed by the manufacturer, and prevent water from collecting at plugs or connection points. Do not combine indoor and outdoor equipment in a way the instructions prohibit, and do not exceed the permitted number of connected sets.
A safe operating routine
- Read the instructions. Confirm the strand’s voltage, permitted location, connection limits and any timer or adapter requirements.
- Inspect before every season. Check sockets, insulation, plugs, adapters and connections for the damage listed by CPSC. Replace a questionable set instead of repairing it informally.
- Plan the layout first. Keep the display clear of heat sources and arrange cords so they cannot be crushed, pulled or tripped over.
- Use the correct circuit. For outdoor decorations, use a GFCI-protected circuit as CPSC recommends. Stop if the protection trips and identify the cause.
- Switch on only when needed. A timer can limit operating hours, but it does not turn a damaged or incorrectly installed strand into a safe one.
- Switch everything off when unattended. Turn off all light strings and decorations before going to bed or leaving home, following CPSC and NFPA guidance.
- Remove and store carefully. Unplug the set before taking it down, inspect it again, and store it so cords and sockets are not crushed or sharply bent.
LED versus incandescent decorative strands
The useful comparison is not just “which bulb is brighter.” Consider energy use, location rating, safety testing, construction and the condition of the exact set you own.

A socket is cracked or a wire is exposed
Unplug the set without touching damaged conductors, remove it from service and discard it. Do not rely on electrical tape, a replacement bulb or a new fuse to make a physically damaged strand safe.
A connection feels loose
Disconnect power and check the instructions. If the connection remains loose or the component is damaged, discontinue use and replace the set. Loose connections are among the conditions CPSC tells consumers to look for during inspection.
An outdoor GFCI trips
Turn off and unplug the display, then inspect the equipment and connections for damage or moisture. Do not repeatedly reset the GFCI while the fault is unresolved. If you cannot identify a safe cause, leave the display disconnected and have the circuit or equipment assessed by a qualified professional.

Do not install it outdoors. Select a product with a clear outdoor-use label and follow its connection and installation instructions.

Keep decorative lights away from other fire hazards
NFPA’s 2025 holiday material reports that more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles and that half of decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. Those statistics concern home decorations overall, not LED light strings specifically; no current figure in the cited guidance isolates fires caused by decorative LED lights.
Use the figures as a reminder to keep every decoration, including a light strand and its cord, away from candles, fireplaces, heaters and other heat sources. Never place a strand where its cable or controller can contact a hot surface, and do not cover components in a way the manufacturer prohibits.
What “energy-efficient and safe” means in practice
For electricity use, LED decorative strands are usually the better choice: DOE’s holiday-strand comparison found a 70 percent reduction versus conventional incandescent strands. For safety, the answer depends on the individual product and installation. A safe decision combines four checks:

- The label matches the intended indoor or outdoor location.
- The sockets, wires, plugs and connections are intact.
- The display is connected and operated as instructed, then switched off before sleep or leaving home.
If any check fails, the energy advantage does not justify continued use. Replace the damaged or unsuitable set and calculate the new strand’s expected cost from its wattage, schedule and local electricity rate.
