Claude Artifacts are not public by default. Creating an artifact does not, by itself, give other people access. For Free, Pro, and Max accounts, you must publish or share an artifact before anyone else can open it. Once published, anyone who has the link can access that shared version until you unpublish it.
Claude for Work Team and Enterprise use a different model: sharing is intended for people inside the organization, and viewers must sign in with an organizational account. Project permissions and files attached to the related conversation can affect what a recipient can see, so check those items before sending a link.

Anthropic’s help guidance supports a precise use of the word “public”: a consumer artifact becomes accessible through a published link, rather than being public simply because Claude generated it. It does not establish that every published artifact is indexed by search engines or easy to discover without its link. Treat the link as access control, not as a confidentiality guarantee.
What happens with Free, Pro, and Max accounts?
Before you publish
An artifact created in a Free, Pro, or Max account is not automatically exposed to other people. Other users cannot use a link they do not have, because no public link has been created through the documented publishing flow. Keep the artifact unpublished while you are drafting, checking data, or deciding who should receive it.

After you publish
Publishing creates a link that can be shared with other people. Anthropic’s official wording is direct: “Anyone with this link can access your creation until you unpublish it.” That includes people who do not already use Claude. A recipient can open and interact with the basic artifact without signing up.
“Anyone with the link” is deliberately narrower than “everyone on the internet.” The documented behavior establishes link-based access; it does not promise that a link is unguessable, hidden from forwarding, or protected from a recipient copying information. Do not place secrets, regulated records, passwords, private customer data, or other material that requires strict access control into a publicly shared artifact.
What a non-user can do
A person opening a published consumer artifact can use its basic interactive experience without creating an account. Claude may prompt that person to sign up when they try advanced capabilities, such as customizing the artifact or using AI-powered features. The prompt for an account does not change the visibility of the original link; it reflects the requirements for those additional functions.
Unpublishing
Unpublishing removes the artifact from the active published-link state described by Anthropic. Until you unpublish, the link remains accessible. The help material does not establish what happens if someone downloaded, copied, screenshotted, or otherwise retained content before you unpublished it. If the material is sensitive, assume that access before unpublishing may have allowed a recipient to retain information.
How Team and Enterprise sharing differs
Organization authentication is required
Claude for Work Team and Enterprise sharing is designed for an organization rather than for an unrestricted public audience. A viewer must be logged in with an account belonging to that organization. Someone who receives the link but has no authenticated organizational account should not be treated as an eligible viewer.

This is an important distinction from a published Free, Pro, or Max artifact. A consumer link is intended to work for anyone who has it, while a work-plan share is checked against the organization’s sign-in and access rules.
Project membership can be another gate
If the artifact was created from a project, the recipient may also need permission to access that project. Having the artifact link alone is therefore not always sufficient for a Team or Enterprise viewer. Before sharing, verify that the intended audience belongs to the right organization and has access to the relevant project.

Anthropic states that “Sharing the artifact will also allow access to attachments and files in the conversation.” This makes the conversation that produced the artifact part of your sharing review. A spreadsheet, uploaded document, image, or other attachment may contain more information than the artifact’s visible interface.
For work material, inspect the associated conversation and remove or replace files that the audience should not receive. Confirm that the artifact is based on the intended project and conversation before you share it; changing the artifact’s visible text alone may not remove information contained in an attached file.
Does a shared link expose every version?
No. A shared artifact link refers to the version that was shared. If you revise the artifact later, do not assume that a recipient’s existing link automatically represents every draft or that a new draft is silently exposed. Check which version you are publishing and share the correct version deliberately.

Version-specific sharing matters when an artifact contains test data, unfinished copy, or an earlier calculation. Use a final review step immediately before publishing so the link points to the version you actually intend people to see.

What happens when someone customizes an artifact?
Customization does not edit the creator’s original. A viewer who customizes a shared artifact creates their own copy, and changes made in that copy do not alter the creator’s artifact. This separation protects the original from a recipient’s edits, but it also means that a customized copy can diverge from the version you shared.
If you need a group to work from one authoritative version, keep ownership of the original clear and tell collaborators where updates should be made. A recipient’s customized copy should not be treated as evidence that your original artifact changed.
When does AI use require a sign-in?
Basic viewing of a publicly shared consumer artifact can work without a Claude account. A viewer who invokes AI-powered functions must sign in. Anthropic says that the viewer’s AI usage counts against that viewer’s own Claude plan limits, not the creator’s limits.
That distinction applies to the person using the feature. Publishing an artifact does not give an anonymous visitor unlimited AI usage, and a creator does not pay for another person’s AI interactions through the creator’s plan. The visitor may therefore see the artifact first and encounter an account or plan requirement only when activating an advanced function.

How to share an artifact without an avoidable privacy mistake
- Identify the account type. Decide whether the artifact is in a Free, Pro, or Max account or in a Claude for Work Team or Enterprise environment. The audience rules are different.
- Confirm the exact version. Open and review the version you intend to publish or share. Look for draft text, test values, internal comments, and data that belonged only in an earlier iteration.
- Inspect the source conversation. For a work artifact, review every attachment and file in the associated conversation. Sharing the artifact can also allow access to those materials.
- Check project access. If the artifact came from a project, confirm that each intended Team or Enterprise viewer can access that project.
- Choose the narrowest appropriate audience. Use internal work sharing when the audience is your organization. Use a consumer published link only when you accept link-based access by anyone who obtains it.
- Publish or share deliberately. Copy the link only after the review. Do not assume that generating the artifact created a link or that an unpublished draft is available to others.
- Explain sign-in requirements. Tell consumer recipients that basic viewing may work without an account but customization and AI features can require sign-in. Tell work recipients to use their organizational account.
- Revoke active access when appropriate. Unpublish a consumer artifact when the link should no longer be active. For a work artifact, remove or change sharing through the organization’s controls when the audience changes.
- Account for retained copies. Unpublishing controls the documented link access; it cannot establish whether a recipient already copied or saved information. Handle sensitive content accordingly.
Common situations and the correct answer
“I generated an artifact but never clicked publish. Can strangers see it?”
Nothing in Anthropic’s sharing guidance says that generation alone publishes an artifact. For consumer plans, public access is tied to publishing or sharing. Keep the artifact unpublished if you do not want a link-based audience.
“Can anyone with my Free, Pro, or Max link open it?”
Yes. Anyone who obtains the published link can access the shared artifact until you unpublish it. They may not need a Claude account for basic viewing, although advanced customization or AI functions can prompt them to sign in.
“Can someone outside my company open a Team or Enterprise artifact?”
Work-plan artifacts are shared inside the organization and require an authenticated organizational account. An outside person without that account should not be considered an eligible viewer. Project permissions can impose an additional requirement.
“Will sharing the artifact share my uploaded files too?”
For the work-sharing behavior documented by Anthropic, sharing the artifact also allows access to attachments and files in the conversation. Review those materials before sending the share.

No. Customization creates the viewer’s own copy. Their changes do not modify the creator’s original artifact.

“If I unpublish, can I guarantee nobody still has the content?”
No such guarantee is established by the documented controls. Unpublishing stops the active published-link access described by Anthropic, but the guidance does not address copies, downloads, screenshots, or other retention by people who accessed it earlier.
Embedding is not the same as link privacy
Anthropic also describes allowed-domain controls for embedding a publicly shared artifact on another website. That setting concerns where an artifact may be embedded. It should not be presented as a restriction on who can open the artifact’s own published link unless Anthropic separately documents that behavior.
If your goal is to limit the people who can open the artifact itself, choose the account and sharing mode accordingly: an unpublished consumer artifact is not made public by creation, while a published consumer artifact is link-accessible; Team and Enterprise sharing uses organizational authentication and may also depend on project access.
The practical privacy rule
Use “public” carefully. A Free, Pro, or Max artifact is private from public link access until you publish it, then accessible to anyone who has the link until you unpublish it. A Team or Enterprise artifact is organization-scoped and requires a work login, with project and attachment permissions potentially extending the material a viewer can access. Review the version, project, conversation files, and audience before sharing, and never treat unpublishing as proof that previously viewed information has been erased.
