Usually, not by themselves. If you only hang pictures, assemble furniture, install curtain rods or shelves, a capable brushed drill or driver will generally do the job and may cost less. Brushless becomes worth the extra money when a specific tool is noticeably lighter or smaller, when you expect long or repeated workloads, when reduced heat and maintenance matter, or when a brushless kit is priced close to a comparable brushed kit.

The motor label is only one buying factor. Compare the complete kit, battery capacity, charger, weight, handling, power, speed, runtime and warranty for the exact tasks you have planned. A brushless percentage quoted by a manufacturer is not a universal result for every tool, battery or material.

What “brushless” changes inside a power tool

A brushed motor uses small metal brushes to transfer electrical current while the shaft spins. Those brushes physically contact the rotating part, creating friction and eventually wearing down. A brushless motor replaces that contact with electronic controls: a circuit board and sensors switch the current as the shaft turns.

Removing the brushes eliminates one wear component and reduces friction. The electronics can also react to resistance from the material, adjusting power delivery instead of running in one fixed pattern. That design can improve efficiency, control and heat management, but the size of the improvement depends on the tool, battery, workload and software. “Brushless” describes the motor architecture; it does not guarantee that one model is more powerful than every brushed model.

Benefits an occasional DIYer may actually notice

Less brush-related maintenance

There are no motor brushes to replace, inspect or clean. For someone who uses a tool only a few times a year, that convenience is real, although brush replacement is rarely an urgent issue on a lightly used household drill. Other parts—switches, gears, chucks, bearings and batteries—can still fail, so brushless does not make the entire tool maintenance-free.

Potentially longer runtime

Lower friction and electronic control can let a battery do more work before recharging. The gain is most useful when you are drilling many holes, driving long fasteners, cutting repeatedly or working away from an outlet. On a single picture hook or a few curtain-rod screws, the difference may be too small to notice.

Consumer Reports quoted its senior test project leader John Banta saying, “Homeowners who use a brushless drill infrequently probably won’t notice the longer life or runtime benefits.” That is a statement about typical light use, not a claim that brushless runtime gains never occur.

Smaller or lighter designs

Manufacturers can sometimes make a brushless tool more compact because the motor does not need brush holders and related parts. In a 2020 Consumer Reports example, a company product manager described one brushless model as 25 percent more compact than the company’s brushed version, with a possible reduction of about one pound and one inch for a compact drill. Those are reported examples, not specifications that apply to every brand or model.

Lower weight helps when you hold a drill overhead, work from a ladder or repeat the same motion for an hour. For occasional jobs at waist height, the handling difference may not justify a large premium.

Heat and sustained work

Heat is a major stressor for motors and batteries. Makita communications manager Wayne Hart told Consumer Reports, “Excessive heat is the enemy of both the motor and the battery.” Brushless electronics can reduce some losses, but cooling depends on the whole design: ventilation, gearing, current limits, battery cells and how hard you push the tool. A brushless badge cannot compensate for an undersized battery or a tool used beyond its intended duty cycle.

When a brushed tool is the sensible choice

  • Your projects are short and light. Hanging pictures, assembling flat-pack furniture, installing a few curtain rods and putting up a small shelf rarely consume enough energy for runtime gains to matter.
  • The brushed kit is substantially cheaper. If both tools provide the needed torque, speed range, chuck size and ergonomics, keeping the price difference may be better value for infrequent use.
  • You already own compatible batteries. A bare brushless tool can look inexpensive until you add a battery and charger. A brushed tool in your existing platform may be the lower-cost complete solution.
  • You need a tool only for occasional backup. A lightly used brushed motor may last for years in a homeowner’s tool chest. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal lifespan or payback period for either motor type.

Do not choose brushed solely because it is cheaper if the specific model is heavy, awkward or unable to handle your material. A well-designed brushless tool can still be the better purchase when comfort and control prevent mistakes or fatigue.

What the published price and runtime figures do—and do not—prove

Consumer Reports’ October 18, 2020 article gave a contemporaneous example of Makita 12V drill-drivers priced at $68 for a brushed version and $122 for a brushless version. Those figures are historical, not current prices, and they may not represent equal battery, charger or promotion contents today. Use them only to understand that a premium has existed, not to set a present-day budget.

The same article said brushless models represented roughly 30 to 50 percent of the cordless-drill market in 2020. That is historical market context, not a current market-share estimate.

DEWALT states that some of its brushless motors deliver up to 57 percent more runtime than standard brushed motors. Makita’s product page for the XVJ05Z jig saw states up to 50 percent longer runtime per charge than similar non-brushless tools. Both are manufacturer-published, product- or comparison-specific claims. “Up to” describes a best-case limit under the company’s test conditions; it is not a promise that your drill will run 57 percent longer on every battery and material.

Compare complete kits, not just motor labels

Build a like-for-like comparison for the exact tool category and job. Consumer Reports’ cordless-drill buying guide identifies power, speed, runtime, handling and weight as relevant dimensions and describes dynamometer testing for some performance measures. A motor type alone cannot tell you how a model performs on those tests.

Comparison Questions to ask Why it matters for occasional DIY
Task capability Will it drill the required material or drive the required fastener? Does it have the needed torque, clutch range, speed settings or impact function? Prevents paying for a feature set you will not use—or buying a tool that stalls on the one job you have.
Weight and handling What is the ready-to-use weight with the battery attached? Is the grip comfortable and balanced? Often more noticeable than small runtime differences during short household jobs.
Battery and charger Is this a bare tool or a kit? What voltage, amp-hour capacity and charger are included? A low bare-tool price can become expensive after adding the power source.
Platform compatibility Will the battery work with tools you already own or expect to buy? One battery platform can spread the cost across several tools; a new platform adds chargers and batteries.
Current total price What is the complete checkout price today, including battery, charger and shipping? Historical price examples do not reflect current promotions or package contents.
Warranty and service How long is the warranty, and are replacement batteries and parts available in your region? Support may matter more than theoretical motor life when the tool sits unused for months.

Use your project pattern to decide

Choose brushed when the work is occasional and light

A brushed drill/driver is usually adequate for a handful of holes in wood or drywall, assembling furniture, mounting hardware and similar jobs. Prioritize a comfortable grip, a clutch that prevents stripped screws, a two-speed gearbox and a battery that is easy to charge. If the brushed kit costs materially less and meets those requirements, brushless is a preference rather than a necessity.

Lean brushless when sessions are long or repeated

Brushless is more compelling for renovation weekends, repeated deck or shelving work, many fasteners, dense materials, overhead drilling or any task where battery swaps interrupt progress. Runtime, lower heat, compact dimensions and reduced fatigue can repay the premium through productivity and comfort even if you are not a professional.

Consider brushless for a multi-tool platform

If you plan to add a circular saw, reciprocating saw, jig saw or impact driver later, compare the cost and availability of the entire battery platform. A brushless starter kit can be good value when it includes a useful battery and charger and gives access to several compatible tools. Do not assume every tool on a platform has the same brushless performance; evaluate each model.

A practical buying process

  1. List the next three jobs. Write down materials, hole sizes, fastener lengths, cutting time and whether you will work overhead or away from power.
  2. Set the minimum specification. Decide the needed voltage class, chuck size, torque or clutch range, speed settings, accessory type and maximum acceptable weight.
  3. Shortlist one brushed and one brushless candidate. Keep battery capacity, included accessories and warranty as similar as possible.
  4. Compare ready-to-use weight and balance. Hold the tool with the battery installed if a store allows it; a lighter motor does not help if the battery makes the package nose-heavy.
  5. Check kit contents line by line. Confirm whether the box contains a battery, charger, side handle, bits, blade or case. Record the battery’s amp-hour rating.
  6. Check current total pricing. Compare the complete kits on the same date. Treat any sale price as temporary and do not use the 2020 $68/$122 example as a present-day benchmark.
  7. Read task-specific evidence. Look for independent power, speed, runtime, handling and weight results for the exact model. Separate those results from manufacturer marketing claims.
  8. Make the premium earn its place. Buy brushless if the measured handling, runtime, size or platform value solves a problem you actually have. Otherwise, put the savings toward quality bits, blades or an extra battery.

Battery, charger and storage considerations

Battery chemistry and capacity affect real-world runtime at least as directly as the motor label. A high-capacity battery can add substantial weight; a compact battery may improve handling while requiring more frequent charging. Match the battery to the job and check the manufacturer’s compatibility chart before mixing generations or voltage classes.

Store lithium-ion batteries in a cool, dry place, avoid leaving them fully depleted for long periods and use the specified charger. For a tool used only a few times a year, inspect the battery before a project: swelling, cracked casing, heat during charging or a sudden loss of capacity are reasons to stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s disposal guidance. Brushless electronics do not protect a neglected or damaged battery.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming brushless always means more power

Power depends on motor size, gearing, controller limits, battery output and tool design. Compare torque, speed under load and independent test results for the exact model rather than inferring performance from the word “brushless.”

Comparing a bare tool with a complete kit

A bare-tool price excludes the battery and charger. A brushed kit with both included may be cheaper than a brushless bare tool once you make it usable. Put every package on the same basis before deciding.

Generalizing a manufacturer’s maximum claim

“Up to 57 percent” or “up to 50 percent” does not describe every workload. Material hardness, bit size, trigger time, battery capacity and temperature change results. Treat the figures as product claims, not independent guarantees.

Ignoring ergonomics because the job is small

Short jobs still involve awkward angles, ladders and overhead reaches. If one model is clearly better balanced or lighter in your hands, that practical benefit can justify brushless even when runtime does not.

Expecting a brushless motor to eliminate all failures

Brushes are only one wear point. Chucks, switches, gears, bearings, controllers and batteries can still require service. Keep receipts, register the tool if the manufacturer offers that option and follow the stated duty-cycle and charging instructions.

Verdict for an occasional DIY user

For light, infrequent household work, buy the tool that performs the planned tasks comfortably at the best complete-kit price; that may be brushed. Pay extra for brushless when the particular model is lighter or smaller, when you will run it hard or often, when lower heat and maintenance matter, or when a brushless kit is nearly the same price and fits a battery platform you will use. The evidence supports a conditional choice, not a blanket rule that brushless is always worth more.
