Yes. The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is still federally endangered in the United States. Reintroduction has returned animals to several prairie-dog landscapes, so the species is no longer considered extinct in the wild. However, recovery is incomplete: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) reports approximately 300 ferrets living at reintroduced sites and approximately 280 more in captive-breeding facilities, while warning that these figures come from separate pages and are not a synchronized range-wide census.

The distinction matters. A cumulative release total, a captive inventory and an estimate of animals currently surviving in the wild measure different things. Black-footed ferrets remain dependent on healthy prairie-dog colonies, vulnerable to sylvatic plague and other threats, and reliant on continuing breeding, release, vaccination, flea control and monitoring programs.

What “endangered” means for black-footed ferrets

USFWS lists the black-footed ferret as endangered. The animal was listed in 1967 and again in 1970, then carried into the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The federal listing remains in force even though conservation teams have established reintroduced populations.

“Endangered” describes the species’ legal and biological risk; it does not mean that every individual is in immediate danger or that no ferrets remain outside captivity. It means the species is still considered at risk of extinction and has not met the recovery conditions needed for delisting. Reintroduction is a recovery tool, not proof that recovery is complete.

The USFWS species profile explains that ferrets were rediscovered near Meeteetse, Wyoming, in 1981 after being thought lost from the wild. Disease subsequently reduced that isolated population; only 18 animals were known by 1986. Those survivors became the foundation for the captive-breeding and reintroduction program.

How many black-footed ferrets are left?

No single, current, synchronized census is established in the available agency accounts. The most useful figures must therefore be kept in their original context.

Figure What it measures Source and context What it does not mean
Approximately 300 Ferrets living in the wild at reintroduced sites USFWS northern Arizona field story, 2026 Not a precisely dated, range-wide census with one stated survey method
Approximately 280 Ferrets in captive-breeding facilities USFWS conservation-center overview, accessed 2026 Not part of the wild count
More than 10,000 Captive-bred ferrets released into the wild over decades Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, 2026 Not the number currently alive
About 20 Ferrets reported at two Arizona sites Local figure in the 2026 USFWS Arizona story Not an additional 20 to add to the approximately 300
105 Captive-bred ferrets released at Colorado’s Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve since 2022 Smithsonian account dated January 12, 2026 Not a current population estimate for Colorado or the species

Adding 300 wild animals, 280 captive animals and more than 10,000 historical releases would produce a misleading total. The first two are approximate snapshots of different populations; the third is a cumulative program output. Animals released years ago may have died, reproduced, moved or been counted in later estimates.

Why the species nearly disappeared

Loss of grassland and prairie-dog colonies

Black-footed ferrets are specialists of North American grasslands. They normally use prairie-dog burrows rather than digging their own and need extensive, connected colonies. Prairie dogs are also their principal prey. When grasslands are converted or prairie-dog colonies shrink, ferrets lose both food and shelter at the same time.

Prairie-dog control

Poisoning and shooting have reduced prairie-dog populations in parts of the ferret’s former range. The USFWS identifies prey and habitat declines, including prairie-dog control, as continuing stressors. A small or fragmented colony can support fewer ferrets and may be more vulnerable to local disasters.

Disease

Sylvatic plague, caused by a non-native bacterium and spread among prairie dogs by fleas, is described by USFWS as the most significant challenge to ferret population resiliency. Plague can kill prairie dogs, removing the ferret’s food and burrow network, and can also kill ferrets directly.

Other pressures

Drought can reduce plant growth and prairie-dog food supplies. Predators can take inexperienced released animals, especially while they learn to hunt and avoid danger. A small founding population also leaves the species with restricted genetic diversity and a risk of reduced genetic fitness. These pressures interact: a drought-stressed colony with fewer prey animals and a plague outbreak gives ferrets little margin for recovery.

How recovery works

Captive breeding

Breeding centers maintain a managed population that can supply genetically valuable animals for release. Staff track parentage, health and reproduction so that releases do not rely on only a few family lines. The approximately 280 animals reported at facilities are part of this conservation infrastructure, not a reserve that can simply be added to the wild total.

Pre-conditioning young ferrets

Before release, young ferrets can be pre-conditioned for life outside human care. Training exposes them to tasks such as finding prey, using burrows and responding to threats. The goal is to improve survival during the vulnerable transition from a breeding facility to an unfamiliar prairie-dog colony.

Selecting release sites

Teams choose sites with suitable grassland, enough prairie-dog burrows and a management plan for disease and monitoring. Releases are coordinated among federal and state agencies, tribes, land managers, zoos and conservation organizations. As Holly Hicks of the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Small Mammal Project said, “Black-footed ferret recovery is a team effort.”

Managing plague

Recovery programs use vaccination and flea-control measures. Flea-control products may be dispersed in prairie-dog burrows or colonies to reduce the insects that transmit plague. Vaccination protects ferrets against infection, while colony-level flea management addresses an important route of transmission. Neither measure removes every disease risk, so teams continue surveillance and adapt methods to local conditions.

Releasing and monitoring

USFWS says its program releases ferrets each year at several western sites. Biologists then use visual surveys, spotlighting, trail cameras, live trapping and other methods to determine whether released animals survive, reproduce and disperse. Monitoring is essential because a release count alone says nothing about long-term establishment.

Recent reintroduction examples

Garland Prairie, Arizona

A USFWS northern Arizona account describes a first release at Garland Prairie in 2025. The site is being used as a potential nursery: the objective is for ferrets born there to grow up in the landscape and, if local capacity is reached, move to other recovery sites.

Plans call for releases over at least three consecutive years, with fall and spring releases used to compare outcomes. This is a developing local experiment, not a proven range-wide formula. The team is also studying whether seasonal food access affects survival. Gunnison’s prairie dogs at this southern-range site hibernate for four to five months, and ferrets may face a period when prey are less accessible.

Trail cameras have helped staff observe activity, but the team reported that some animals released in fall were difficult to recapture. That result is an unresolved monitoring and survival question, not evidence that the releases failed.

Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve, Colorado

At Colorado’s Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve, the Smithsonian reported 105 captive-bred ferrets released since 2022. Because ferrets are nocturnal, spend much of their time underground and are difficult to see, researchers use specially made tracking collars. Soil underground can disrupt transmissions from ordinary tracking technology, so collar design and signal recovery are practical parts of the study.

The site also illustrates the uncertainty of reintroduction. As Smithsonian conservation director Kieran Andreoni put it, “There’s a steep and very dangerous learning curve when it comes to predators.” Released ferrets must learn to hunt, avoid predators and navigate burrow systems; researchers cannot assume that a healthy captive animal will immediately behave like an experienced wild one.

Why reintroduction has not led to delisting

Delisting requires evidence that a species is secure across a sufficiently resilient portion of its range, not merely that some animals have been released. For black-footed ferrets, agencies must continue evaluating:

  • whether colonies support self-sustaining reproduction over multiple generations;
  • whether ferrets occupy enough sites to withstand a local disease outbreak or drought;
  • whether prairie-dog prey and burrow habitat remain available and connected;
  • whether plague vaccination and flea-control programs can be maintained;
  • whether genetic diversity and fitness remain adequate; and
  • whether monitoring can reliably detect population gains and losses.

The approximately 300 wild ferrets cited by USFWS show that reintroduction is producing living populations. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate that the species is secure enough for removal from the Endangered Species Act list.

How to read black-footed ferret population claims

Check whether the number is current or cumulative

“Released since 2022” and “released over decades” are cumulative program measures. “Living in the wild” is a current-population estimate, although its exact survey date and method may vary. These phrases should never be treated as interchangeable.

Check the geography

A figure for Arizona, Colorado or a single preserve is a local count. The Arizona story’s approximately 20 ferrets at two sites is a subset of the broader wild context reported there, not a separate national total.

Check whether captivity is included

Captive-breeding animals support recovery but are not wild animals. A report that lists both groups should label them separately. The available USFWS pages do not establish one synchronized total for all living ferrets.

Check the method and date

Ferrets are nocturnal and spend much of their lives underground, making detection difficult. Trail cameras, collars, trapping and other methods each reveal different parts of the population. A number without a date, location and method should be treated cautiously.

What land managers and the public can do

Ferret recovery is conducted through official wildlife programs rather than private ownership or informal releases. The most useful public-facing support is to protect prairie-dog habitat, follow agency guidance on disease and land use, and support qualified conservation and research organizations. Do not attempt to capture, buy, keep or release a black-footed ferret; handling an endangered species or moving it between sites requires authorization and specialized veterinary and ecological controls.

In Arizona, the experimental-population designation under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act is intended to give landowners and land managers clearer rules for activities on participating lands. USFWS biologist Jessica Blackwood Miller described the designation as providing “more regulatory certainty and flexibility” for those activities. The designation facilitates managed recovery; it does not change the species’ endangered status.

What would count as meaningful progress?

Progress is more than the number of animals released in a year. Stronger evidence would include repeated wild-born recruitment, survival through several seasons, expansion to additional connected colonies, stable prey populations, effective plague management and reliable genetic exchange among sites. It would also include monitoring that can distinguish a genuinely growing population from temporary visibility after a release.

USFWS describes the work as continuing toward recovery through new tools, partnerships and site-specific experiments. The program’s long history—from the 1981 rediscovery and the 18 known animals in 1986 to modern breeding, vaccination, flea control and tracking—shows substantial progress, but the continuing threats explain why the federal endangered listing remains appropriate.
