Short-term momentum has weakened sharply, but the data do not prove that Bitcoin demand has structurally ended. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $532.3 million from October 1–15, 2026, after taking in $2.65 billion during September. The October figures show a reversal from a strong prior month, with money still moving into some funds.
What the October 2026 numbers show
BTC Pulse counted -$532.3 million in net flows across U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs during the 11 trading sessions from October 1 through October 15, 2026. There were six inflow days and five outflow days, but the losses on the largest redemption sessions outweighed the gains.
| Period or session | Net flow | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| October 1–15, 2026 | -$532.3 million | Aggregate U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flow over 11 trading days |
| October 7, 2026 | -$484.9 million | Largest one-day outflow in the period |
| October 8, 2026 | -$244.1 million | Second-largest outflow in the period |
| October 14, 2026 | -$261.4 million | Third-largest outflow in the period |
| October 12–16, 2026 | About -$228.4 million | Weekly total reported by SatoshiNakamoto.TV using Farside rows through October 16 |
| October 16, 2026 | -$82.4 million | Friday session included in the weekly update |
Because issuer reports can arrive after a trading session closes, daily rows may be revised. Each figure should therefore be read with its stated cutoff date rather than treated as a permanent final total.

September was strong, so October is a reversal from a high base
The October weakness follows $2.65 billion of net inflows in September 2026, according to The Block. September’s total was lower than August’s $3.52 billion but still the second-largest monthly inflow since October 2025. That sequence matters: two weeks of October redemptions show a loss of momentum, not that demand disappeared after a long decline.

SatoshiNakamoto.TV’s October 17 update put cumulative net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs at about $56.9 billion since launch, calculated with Farside data through the October 16 session. The cumulative figure and the recent negative weeks answer different questions: the former measures the product category’s history, while the latter measures current positioning.
Money is moving unevenly between funds
October’s aggregate result hides a meaningful split among products. Through October 15, BlackRock’s IBIT recorded a $261.3 million inflow, and Morgan Stanley’s MSBT recorded a $23.9 million inflow. Fidelity’s FBTC lost $461.3 million, while ARKB lost $214.9 million.

|---|---|
| IBIT | +$261.3 million |
| MSBT | +$23.9 million |
| FBTC | -$461.3 million |
| ARKB | -$214.9 million |
This dispersion means a category-level outflow does not imply that every Bitcoin ETF is losing assets. Investors can redeem one fund and create shares in another, or move to cash, without the daily table identifying their motive or investor type.

The fee schedule reproduced from Farside by SatoshiNakamoto.TV was checked on October 13, 2026. These are annual expense ratios, so they reduce returns over time even though the ETF’s share price is designed to track bitcoin.

A lower fee can improve long-term tracking relative to a higher-fee product, but it does not prevent Bitcoin-price losses or explain every day’s creations and redemptions.
Why the biggest outflows came around macro news
The October 7 outflow came after the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes, and the October 14 outflow occurred on the day of a hotter-than-expected September consumer-price-index release. The dates coincided with major macro-information windows. Flow data alone cannot establish that either event caused investors to sell, so the calendar relationship should not be presented as proof of causation.

September’s more constructive mood was reflected in a comment from Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, quoted by The Block on October 2, 2026: “With the Q4 bottom seemingly established, continued ETF inflows also signal improving market sentiment and a potentially more bullish setup heading into the final quarter.” October’s subsequent redemptions show why that interpretation must be treated as a point-in-time assessment rather than a forecast.
What a Bitcoin ETF flow actually measures
Creations minus redemptions
A daily net inflow is the dollar value of new ETF shares created minus shares redeemed. Positive flow means creations exceeded redemptions; negative flow means redemptions exceeded creations. The figure is about fund share supply and assets, not a direct count of coins bought by a particular class of investor.

Exposure through a brokerage account
A spot Bitcoin ETF holds bitcoin directly and trades on an exchange like other listed securities. An investor can obtain Bitcoin-price exposure through an ordinary brokerage account without managing wallet keys or private-key backups. The shares still carry Bitcoin’s volatility and the fund’s fee drag.
How outflows affect existing holders
When shares are redeemed, the fund’s share count and assets generally decline. A holder who does not sell continues to own ETF shares intended to track the price of bitcoin, less expenses and normal tracking differences; an outflow does not automatically force that holder to sell.
Regulatory structure
The SEC treats these products as exchange-traded commodity trusts. Their investor protections and operating structure differ from those of classic mutual funds governed by the Investment Company Act of 1940, so “ETF” should not be read as meaning identical legal or risk characteristics across all fund types.

- Use the cutoff date attached to every daily, weekly or monthly number.
- Keep U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows separate from Ether and other-asset ETF flows.
- Do not treat October’s negative total as proof that institutional demand has permanently disappeared; the same period includes positive flows into IBIT and MSBT.
- Do not use a single day’s flow as a guaranteed next-day Bitcoin price signal. Flows describe creations, redemptions and positioning, while price also reflects derivatives, spot-market trading, leverage, liquidity and macro expectations.
- Remember that late issuer reporting can revise a daily row, especially when comparing an initial headline with a later cumulative total.
Are Bitcoin ETFs running out of steam?
They are showing weaker short-term momentum, not a proven structural collapse in demand. The evidence is the $532.3 million October 1–15 loss and the additional roughly $228.4 million loss for October 12–16, set against September’s $2.65 billion inflow and the positive October balance at IBIT. The most accurate reading is an October reversal with significant fund-to-fund dispersion. Investors should watch whether outflows persist across additional weeks and products before treating this period as a lasting change in the market.
