Yes—backlinks still matter for Google SEO, but they are one signal among many, not a guaranteed ranking boost. Google says it uses links to determine page relevance and discover new pages, and its ranking-systems guide says link analysis, including PageRank, remains part of its core systems. Google does not publish a universal percentage of ranking weight assigned to backlinks or promise a specific improvement from any individual link.
The practical goal is not to collect the largest link count. It is to earn relevant, useful links, structure your internal links so important pages can be found, and avoid tactics intended to manipulate rankings.
What Google officially says about backlinks
Google’s current guidance is unusually clear on the basic question. Its link best-practices documentation, updated December 10, 2025, says: “Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl.” That covers both external backlinks and the links Google discovers while crawling the web.

Those statements establish that links remain relevant. They do not establish that backlinks are the most important factor, that a certain domain-authority score is used by Google, or that every new link produces a measurable ranking increase. Google describes a system with many signals, often evaluated at page level, with some signals operating across a site.
How backlinks can help a page rank
They provide discovery paths
A link from a page Google can crawl gives its systems another route to a destination URL. This is especially useful for a new page with few internal references. Discovery does not guarantee indexing or ranking, but a crawlable link can help Google find the URL and understand how it relates to other content.
They add relevance and context
The surrounding page, the words used in the link, and the destination content give search systems context. A link from an article explaining a particular accounting rule is more topically meaningful to an accounting guide than an unrelated link placed on a generic page. Relevance is not a simple transferable score; it is a reason to assess links by usefulness and context rather than by raw quantity.

A normal HTML anchor should include an href attribute. Google recommends links that readers can follow and understand. A link hidden in an inaccessible script, blocked from crawling, or presented only as plain text may not provide the same discovery path as a standard anchor.
What makes one backlink more useful than another?
Google’s guidance does not give a public scoring formula, so evaluate a prospective link using the factors below instead of a single third-party metric.
Rank #2
| Factor | Stronger practice | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial purpose | The link helps readers verify a claim, learn a definition, or continue to a genuinely useful resource. | The only apparent purpose is to influence rankings. |
| Topical fit | The linking page and destination address related subjects and the transition makes sense to a reader. | An unrelated page links to a destination solely because an anchor phrase was requested. |
| Anchor text | Concise, descriptive wording that sets expectations for the destination. | A forced list of exact-match keywords or a vague label that hides the destination’s subject. |
| Placement and visibility | The link appears in the main content where readers would naturally use it. | A sitewide footer, template block, widget, or hidden element distributes the same optimized link broadly. |
| Technical form | A crawlable HTML link with a valid href that resolves to the intended page. |
Broken URLs, blocked destinations, or links that users cannot follow normally. |
| Attribute and payment status | Paid and sponsored links use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow"; user-submitted links use rel="ugc" or rel="nofollow" when appropriate. |
A paid placement is presented as an ordinary editorial link to pass ranking credit. |
Google’s anchor-text guidance recommends concise, relevant descriptions and warns against cramming keywords into anchors. Write for the person deciding whether to click; the wording should accurately describe what the destination contains.
Are all backlinks valuable?
No. A link can be useful for referral traffic and credibility even when it is not intended to pass ranking credit. Conversely, a large number of irrelevant or manipulative links can create policy problems without improving visibility. Google has not published a rule saying that every low-quality link automatically harms a site, nor has it published a guaranteed benefit for a link from any particular type of domain.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat third-party “authority,” “toxicity,” or similar scores as Google metrics. Google’s SEO hiring guidance explains that third-party tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data and that Google does not evaluate or endorse them. Their measurements can support an investigation, but they are estimates from outside Google, not ranking scores.
Which link-building tactics violate Google’s policies?
Google defines link spam as “the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.” Its spam policies describe examples including:
- Buying or selling links, including money, goods, or services exchanged for links intended to affect ranking.
- Excessive reciprocal arrangements created mainly to exchange ranking credit.
- Automated programs or services that create links.
- Paid advertorials or advertisements whose links pass ranking credit without an appropriate qualifying attribute.
- Low-quality directory or bookmark links made primarily for SEO.
- Keyword-rich links embedded in widgets that are distributed across many sites.
- Widely distributed footer or template links with optimized anchors.
- Forum comments or signatures containing optimized links.
Advertising and sponsorship are not automatically prohibited. The issue is whether the link is qualified correctly and whether the arrangement is designed to manipulate organic rankings. Use rel="sponsored" for paid placements, or rel="nofollow" when that is the appropriate instruction. For links submitted by users, rel="ugc" or rel="nofollow" can identify their origin.
Can bad backlinks hurt a website?
Algorithmic treatment
Google may ignore or discount links that appear manipulative or untrustworthy. That can leave a site with no ranking benefit from the links, but it is not evidence that every unwanted link causes a penalty. Sites naturally attract some irrelevant links, including scraped pages and low-quality directories, and site owners cannot control every mention of their content.
Rank #3
Manual actions
A more direct risk is a manual action when Google determines that a site has violated its link-spam policies. A manual action can affect part or all of a site. Search Console will show the issue in the Manual actions report when one has been applied.
What to do if Search Console reports unnatural links
Use Google’s Manual actions report guidance as the authority for the recovery process. The practical sequence is:
- Read the specific manual-action notice. Identify whether the issue concerns links to your site, links from your site, or another violation.
- Review the link-spam policy. Compare the examples with your marketing, sponsorship, widget, directory, guest-post, and sitewide-link practices.
- Inspect the links report in Search Console. Export the available linking-page data and group links by campaign, placement, anchor text, and whether you control the linking page.
- Request removal or qualification. Contact site owners where practical and ask them to remove a manipulative link or ensure it no longer passes ranking credit. Correct links on properties you control.
- Disavow only when appropriate. If violating links cannot be removed and are contributing to the manual-action problem, use Google’s disavow process for those specific links or domains. Google explicitly warns against blindly disavowing every backlink and says organic links should not be disavowed.
- Submit a reconsideration request. Explain what caused the issue, show the corrective work, and describe safeguards that prevent the tactic from recurring.
Do not start with a mass disavow simply because a third-party tool labels links as toxic. The disavow tool is for a narrow remediation scenario, not routine backlink maintenance.
How to earn backlinks without creating link spam
Create something worth citing
Original explanations, documented processes, useful reference pages, data you are entitled to publish, calculators, and clear definitions give other publishers a reason to link. A link earned because it improves the reader’s understanding is more defensible than a link requested only with a target keyword.
Promote to relevant audiences
Tell people who already serve the same audience about a genuinely useful resource. Outreach can be legitimate when the recipient is free to decide whether the page belongs in its content. Do not require an exact-match anchor, payment for ranking credit, or reciprocal placement as a condition.
Rank #4
Use descriptive anchors
For links you control, describe the destination naturally. “Read the guide to image compression” tells a reader what will happen next. Repeating a commercial keyword in every link is less useful and can resemble the manipulative patterns Google warns about.
Internal links matter too
Backlinks from other sites are only part of a site’s link structure. Google says internal links help people and Google understand a site and discover pages. Every important page should be linked from at least one other page on the site. There is no magical ideal number of links per page; add links where they help navigation and comprehension.
A practical internal-link workflow is:
- List pages that generate business value or answer important search questions.
- Find related pages that already receive crawled traffic or contain relevant explanations.
- Add a contextual link using concise wording that accurately describes the destination.
- Check that the destination returns the intended status, is indexable when appropriate, and is not orphaned after future edits.
- Review navigation, breadcrumbs, related-content modules, and XML sitemaps together so important URLs have more than one discovery path where that improves usability.
Linking out can also be appropriate. Google says external links can establish trustworthiness when they make sense, such as when you cite a source. There is no general SEO rule that a page must avoid linking to other sites.

Start with outcomes rather than a link-count target. Track whether important pages are being discovered and indexed, whether relevant queries gain impressions or clicks, and whether referral visitors from a linking page engage with the destination. Review changes by page and by topic instead of assuming that every movement came from one backlink.
Search Console provides the first-party links report for inspecting links Google has associated with your site. It is not a complete, real-time inventory of every web link, so combine it with server logs, crawl checks, and direct referral analytics when diagnosing discovery or traffic issues.
Best Value
When using external SEO platforms, record the provider, date, database coverage, and metric definition. Those tools can help organize prospects or compare observed link patterns, but they cannot reveal Google’s private weighting or certify that a link will improve ranking.
Common questions about backlink importance
Does one high-profile backlink guarantee a first-page result?
No. Google publishes no universal guarantee or fixed link value. Ranking depends on many systems and signals, the query, the page, competition, and technical and content factors.
Should I pursue the highest possible number of backlinks?
No. A smaller set of relevant, editorially justified links is a safer objective than an arbitrary volume target. Quantity-focused campaigns can drift into exchanges, automation, paid ranking credit, or other link-spam patterns.
Are nofollow links useless?
No. A qualified link may still send referral visitors, expose a resource to publishers, and contribute to discovery even when it is not intended to pass ranking credit. Its traffic and audience value should be assessed separately from ranking effects.
Quick Recap
Should every paid link be removed?
Not necessarily. Paid advertising and sponsorship can remain when the link is correctly qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" and the arrangement complies with Google’s policies.
