Short answer: Apple says Apple Intelligence preview summaries of emails, messages and notifications are generated by on-device models. Google’s Pixel feature summarizes unread message text shown in notifications, but Google’s Pixel help documentation does not provide an equally specific statement about routing, retention, logging or training. Both platforms let you disable summaries and exclude apps; availability depends on device, software, language and region.

What “private” means for an AI notification summary

A notification summary is a condensed version of text that an app has already placed in your notification shade. The feature must read enough notification content to identify the main point, then generate shorter wording for display. Privacy therefore has several separate questions:

  • What text is read? This may be the visible message content in supported notifications, not merely the app name.
  • Where is processing performed? A platform may document on-device processing, server processing, or a combination.
  • What is retained? A privacy statement may or may not explain whether notification data, requests or generated summaries are stored.
  • What is used for training? A no-training statement for one product does not automatically apply to another feature on the same phone.
  • Who can see the result? A summary can expose the substance of a message on a lock screen or in the notification shade even when the original app is locked.

The available documentation answers these questions differently for Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones and for Google’s Pixel AI notification summaries. Treat the claims as feature-specific rather than as blanket promises about every AI function on the phone.

Apple Intelligence notification summaries

What Apple says is processed

Apple’s settings documentation describes summaries for long or stacked notifications. Its Apple Intelligence privacy documentation specifically discusses preview summaries of emails, messages and notifications. That wording means the system is intended to condense the content represented in those notifications, rather than simply grouping alerts by application.

Apple lets you choose which apps have their notifications summarized. An app-level choice is important for sensitive sources such as work communications, health services, banking alerts or private conversations: leaving summaries enabled globally does not require enabling them for every app.

Apple’s feature-specific processing statement

Apple’s exact statement is: “For example, when Apple Intelligence provides you with preview summaries of your emails, messages, and notifications, these summaries are generated by on-device models.” This supports a clear conclusion about the described preview-summary operation: Apple says the summary generation itself is performed on the iPhone’s local models.

That statement should not be expanded into a claim that every Apple Intelligence request is always local. Apple also documents Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for more complex requests that need a larger server-based model. Apple says only data relevant to the request is sent to Apple silicon servers in that process. The documentation reviewed here does not say that notification summaries use PCC, so it is more accurate to describe the notification-summary statement as on-device and to treat PCC as a separate Apple Intelligence pathway.

Apple provides an Apple Intelligence processing report that can show whether recorded requests ran on the device or through Private Cloud Compute. The report can help you inspect processing environments for recorded requests, but it is not evidence that every Apple Intelligence feature follows one universal route.

How to turn Apple summaries off or limit them

  1. Open Settings on a supported iPhone.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Select Summarize Notifications.
  4. Turn the feature off, or leave it on and choose which apps may be summarized.

Apple Intelligence features require a compatible iPhone, supported software, and an eligible language and region. Apple changes eligibility as support expands, so check Apple’s current device requirements before treating the setting as evidence that a particular model or language is supported.

What Apple’s statement does not establish

  • It does not establish that every notification-related diagnostic or account service is local.
  • It does not say that all Apple Intelligence features avoid PCC.
  • It does not provide a quantified summary error rate.
  • It does not guarantee that a generated summary will preserve context or intent.

For a sensitive or consequential message, open the original conversation before replying, approving a transaction or acting on an instruction. A local model can still produce an incomplete or misleading condensation.

Google Pixel AI notification summaries

What the Pixel feature summarizes

Google describes AI notification summaries as summaries of unread messages surfaced in notifications. The feature works across popular messaging applications, including Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp, as well as other supported apps. You can exclude individual apps rather than applying one all-or-nothing choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phrase “messages surfaced in notifications” is narrower than a claim that the feature scans every conversation stored in each messaging app. Google’s Pixel help page does not enumerate every field in a notification payload that the model reads. It also does not state whether notification text, intermediate requests or summaries are retained after processing.

What Google documents about privacy—and what it does not

Google’s broader Android AICore documentation describes a system service used for supported on-device AI tasks and explains the privacy advantages of local processing. That is useful context, but it is not a feature-specific privacy guarantee for Pixel notification summaries. The Pixel help page itself does not spell out the summary feature’s exact data routing, logging, retention or model-training behavior.

Accordingly, you can accurately say that Pixel summaries condense unread notification messages and that Android includes local AI infrastructure. You cannot, from these documents alone, promise that every Pixel summary is generated on-device, that no notification data leaves the phone, that no logs exist, or that the data is never used for training.

How to disable Pixel summaries or exclude apps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Open Notification Summaries.
  4. Turn AI notification summaries off, or leave them on and exclude individual messaging apps.

The setting is off by default according to Google’s documentation. The phone may also require notification access for Android System Intelligence; if that access is disabled, the feature may not operate.

Pixel compatibility and language limits

Google says AI notification summaries are available on Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. The documented languages are English and Japanese. Device, software and regional availability can change, so a missing setting does not necessarily indicate a fault: the model, Android release, language or market may be ineligible.

Do not confuse Pixel summaries with Android Auto message summaries

Google separately documents message summaries for Google Assistant in Android Auto and Google built-in cars. That in-car feature has an explicit statement that messages and summaries are not logged or used to train models, subject to the scope of that product’s documentation.

This statement must remain attached to Android Auto and built-in-car message summaries. It is not a blanket privacy promise for Pixel phone notification summaries, Android AICore or other Google Assistant features. A feature name that sounds similar does not make the underlying data policy interchangeable.

What content should you assume the model can see?

Use the narrowest assumption supported by each platform’s description. For Apple, assume that the notification text needed to summarize an email, message or long notification is available to the on-device summarization model. For Pixel, assume that unread message text presented through supported notifications can be processed. Neither source provides a complete field-by-field schema.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that an app exclusion protects notifications that another app mirrors, forwards or quotes. A conversation could appear in a different messaging client, a mail alert or a work-management application. Review notification settings across apps, not only the app where the original message was written.

Summaries can also be more revealing than a generic alert. “You have a new message” exposes little; a generated line that names a person, appointment, diagnosis or payment may disclose the substance immediately. Lock-screen previews, notification history and smartwatches can create additional viewing surfaces controlled by their own settings.

Accuracy and discretion are separate from technical privacy

On-device processing does not make a summary accurate, complete or appropriate to act on. Cloud documentation does not by itself mean a summary is inaccurate. The reviewed platform materials provide no quantified error rate for either notification-summary feature.

  • Read the original thread before acting on legal, medical, financial or workplace instructions.
  • Check whether the summary combines multiple stacked notifications and could omit who said what.
  • Be cautious when a short alert lacks timing, negation or attachment context.
  • Disable summaries for apps where even a condensed subject would be sensitive.

A practical privacy checklist

If you use an iPhone with Apple Intelligence

  • Open Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications.
  • Disable the feature entirely or remove sensitive apps from the summarized-app list.
  • Review lock-screen notification previews separately; disabling summaries does not necessarily hide ordinary notification text.
  • Use Apple’s processing report when you need to inspect the environment recorded for Apple Intelligence requests.
  • Keep Apple Intelligence language, region and device requirements in mind after software updates.

If you use a supported Pixel phone

  • Open Settings > Notifications > Notification Summaries.
  • Leave the feature off if Google’s unspecified routing or retention details do not meet your privacy requirement.
  • If enabled, exclude sensitive messaging apps individually.
  • Check Android System Intelligence notification access if summaries are unavailable.
  • Confirm that the phone is a Pixel 9 or later, not an A-series model, and that the interface language is English or Japanese as documented.

If you use Android Auto

Read the Android Auto or Google Assistant message-summary controls separately from phone notification settings. The no-logging and no-training statement applies to the documented in-car feature, not automatically to Pixel notification summaries.

Bottom line for privacy-conscious readers

Apple provides the clearer feature-specific answer: it says Apple Intelligence preview summaries of emails, messages and notifications are generated by on-device models. Google clearly describes the input category for Pixel summaries—unread messages in supported notifications—but its Pixel help documentation does not state the feature’s routing, retention, logging or training behavior. In both ecosystems, the safest control is to disable summaries or exclude sensitive apps, and to treat every visible summary as potentially revealing the message’s substance.
