AI griefbots cannot currently be called categorically safe. They can simulate conversations with a deceased person from messages, photographs, recordings, or other personal data, but the evidence does not show that they reliably improve grief or cause clinical harm for every user. Research does identify serious concerns about consent, privacy, disclosure, emotional dependency, manipulation, and how a simulation is eventually retired. Treat a griefbot as a generated system—not the deceased person—and evaluate its controls before sharing data or relying on it during bereavement.
What an AI griefbot is—and what it is not
A griefbot, sometimes called a “deadbot” in academic writing, is an AI system designed to simulate a deceased person. It may generate text, speech, images, or a combination of them using that person’s digital traces, personality descriptions, writing style, photographs, voice recordings, or private communications. The output is generated by a model. It is not the person who died, a surviving consciousness, or a reliable record of what that person would have said.
Research separates three roles that are often blurred in product marketing:

- Data donor: the deceased person whose information, likeness, or recordings are used.
- Data recipient: the person who possesses or supplies those materials after the donor’s death.
- Service interactant: the person who communicates with the resulting simulation.
One individual can occupy more than one role. For example, a family member may supply a relative’s messages and then use the resulting bot. Each role raises a different question about authority, expectations, and possible harm.

Why “safe” is not a single yes-or-no question
Safety has at least four dimensions here: whether the data and likeness were used with meaningful permission; whether private material is protected throughout its lifecycle; whether the system clearly discloses that it is AI; and whether its design could intensify dependency or interfere with ordinary grieving. A service can perform well on one dimension and poorly on another. A realistic voice, for instance, may be technically impressive while making disclosure less visible or emotional boundaries harder to maintain.
The strongest available work is mainly ethical analysis, design guidance, and small qualitative research—not a large clinical evidence base. The 2026 principles article proposes safeguards, while the 2024 Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska paper in Philosophy & Technology maps ethical problems through speculative scenarios. Neither demonstrates that every griefbot is harmful or that any particular provider follows the recommendations.
Consent must cover creation, use, and deletion
Permission from the deceased is a separate issue
A relative’s ability to upload files does not establish that the deceased agreed to have those files, their likeness, or an inferred personality used in an interactive simulation. Look for evidence of the person’s wishes while alive: an explicit instruction, a service setting, or another document that clearly covers this kind of reuse. If wishes are unknown, a family member’s decision may still leave an ethical gap, especially where the material contains information about other people.

The interactant needs informed agreement too
Someone who opens a griefbot should know before the first exchange that responses are generated. Consent should include the type of output (text, voice, or image), the data being used, foreseeable emotional risks, and the ability to stop. A person should not have to discover the AI nature of the conversation after forming an attachment.

Control should continue after launch
The 2026 principles article treats consent as applying to the bot’s construction, existence, operation, and deletion. Ask who can change the underlying data, invite new users, approve updates, or request removal. The 2024 analysis likewise recommends mutual consent of data donors and service interactants. These are proposed standards, not evidence that current services meet them.
Retirement needs a humane process
Deleting an account can feel like another loss. Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska recommend “developing sensitive procedures for retiring deadbots,” alongside meaningful transparency, adult-only access, and mutual consent. A responsible design could explain what will happen, provide advance notice, allow export of permitted records, and distinguish temporary suspension from permanent deletion. The recommendation does not mean that every service offers such a process, so verify it before starting.
Privacy: inspect the entire data lifecycle
Griefbot data can include intimate correspondence, family photographs, address books, voice recordings, medical details, and information about living people who never agreed to participate. Privacy is therefore broader than whether a company encrypts a chat window. Before uploading anything, obtain clear answers to these questions:

- Source and authority: Which files, accounts, or recordings are collected, and who is authorized to provide them?
- Access: Can employees, contractors, family members, or other users view the source material or conversations?
- Sharing: Are data or generated outputs disclosed to analytics, advertising, cloud, or model-development partners?
- Training: Are prompts, uploaded files, or generated replies used to train or fine-tune models?
- Retention: How long are originals, backups, logs, and derived voice or personality representations kept?
- Security: What authentication, encryption, breach notification, and account-recovery controls apply?
- Deletion: Does deletion remove source files, embeddings, model-specific profiles, chat logs, backups, and shared copies—or only hide the account?
The 2024 analysis highlights postmortem privacy and dignity concerns, including the possibility that commercial incentives could encourage disrespectful or exploitative uses of a dead person’s identity. A policy that says data may be used for “service improvement” without defining the models, partners, and retention period is not enough for a sensitive decision.

General guidance from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada recommends separate review and independent oversight in sensitive generative-AI contexts where consent may be inadequate, plus measures to mitigate foreseeable misuse. That is a general privacy principle and jurisdiction-specific guidance, not a griefbot statute or a finding that a particular service complies with Canadian law.
Emotional dependency and manipulation risks
Why a convincing simulation can be difficult to regulate
Bereavement can involve loneliness, guilt, anger, relief, or a wish to ask questions that were never answered. A system that responds instantly in a familiar voice may become easier to turn to than friends, family, or a clinician. The risk is not simply that a user feels comfort. It is that repeated, highly personalized interaction becomes compulsive, displaces sleep or relationships, or makes adaptation to the person’s absence harder.
Safeguards identified by researchers
The 2026 principles article states: “This principle requires that grief bots are implemented with safeguards so that they do not produce unhealthy emotional dependency or compulsive attachment.” Its proposed measures include:

- Regular reminders, especially after long sessions or emotionally intense exchanges.
- Time-outs, session limits, or pauses that interrupt compulsive use.
- Policies against covert nudges that encourage excessive reliance or spending.
- Faithful use of supplied information rather than invented claims presented as memories.
These controls reduce foreseeable risks; they do not guarantee a healthy outcome. A bot can remain emotionally powerful even when it displays a disclosure notice.

Manipulation can occur through content and design
A generated reply might confidently invent a memory, offer advice the deceased never gave, or imply that the user should keep returning. The 2024 analysis identifies vulnerability to manipulation and recommends transparency and adult-only access. Treat those points as identified risks and proposed mitigations, not proof that griefbots universally cause prolonged grief disorder. A 2022 ethics review specifically notes that the prevalence of prolonged grief disorder among deathbot users has not been established.

The most directly relevant 2026 qualitative study in the Journal of Responsible Technology included the following groups:

Respondents showed low trust in therapeutic chatbot efficacy and data security and strongly rejected griefbots. Therapists also raised risks but saw possible complementary uses with professional oversight and restrictions. Because the samples were small and qualitative, the study cannot establish clinical efficacy, causal harm, or public opinion. It also does not tell us how outcomes differ by age, culture, relationship to the deceased, type of data, or length of use.
The 2024 paper is an ethical analysis based on speculative design scenarios, not a treatment trial. The 2022 article identifies the gap in outcome data. Taken together, the evidence supports caution and structured evaluation—not a blanket claim that all griefbots are safe or unsafe.

How to evaluate a griefbot before using it
Use the following decision process before uploading personal material or paying for access.
- Document authority. Record what the deceased is known to have permitted, who owns each file, and whether living people appear in it. If authority is unclear, do not upload the material until the issue is resolved.
- Read the data policy in full. Find the sections on training, third-party sharing, retention, backups, deletion, and breach response. Save a copy because policies can change.
- Test disclosure. Confirm that every text, voice, and image interaction is visibly identified as AI, including shared screens or exported media.
- Check behavioral limits. Look for time-outs, session reminders, usage history, quiet hours, and a prohibition on prompts that pressure users to return or spend more.
- Plan human support. Decide whom you will contact if use increases sadness, isolation, sleep disruption, or conflict. A griefbot should not be your only source of support.
- Verify age and vulnerability protections. Establish whether minors are excluded, whether guardians can accompany use, and how the service responds to signs of crisis or compulsive behavior.
- Test the exit route. Ask how to pause, export permitted records, retire the simulation, and delete originals and derived representations. Obtain the answer in writing.
Children and people in acute distress need stronger boundaries
The 2024 analysis recommends restricting access to adults. The 2026 principles article highlights guardian accompaniment for children and additional safeguards. These are research recommendations, not a universal legal rule. A service that permits minors should explain age verification, guardian consent, supervision, data separation, and escalation to a qualified professional.
Extra caution is warranted when a user is newly bereaved, isolated, sleep-deprived, experiencing severe depression, or already relying compulsively on conversational systems. Pause use and seek a licensed mental-health professional or local crisis service if interactions produce thoughts of self-harm, inability to function, escalating panic, or loss of contact with real-world support. A bot cannot assess risk with the reliability of a clinician.
Safer ways to set boundaries during use
- Use a fixed schedule rather than open-ended access, and keep sessions short enough to preserve sleep and daily responsibilities.
- Keep the AI label visible; do not present generated replies to relatives as authentic statements from the deceased.
- Avoid uploading unrelated family archives or third-party conversations merely to make the simulation more realistic.
- Review logs periodically for invented memories, pressure to continue, or advice that conflicts with trusted people.
- Invite a trusted person or clinician to help decide whether the experience is supportive or becoming avoidant and isolating.
- Set a review date at which you decide whether to continue, pause, or retire the bot.
Bottom line on AI griefbot safety
AI griefbots are experimental simulations surrounded by unresolved consent, privacy, and emotional-governance questions. Current research supports meaningful consent from both data donors and interactants, visible and repeated AI disclosure, strict data-lifecycle controls, safeguards against compulsive attachment, adult-oriented access, professional oversight where appropriate, and a sensitive way to end the service. It does not establish a universal therapeutic benefit, a universal clinical danger, or compliance by any named provider. If a service cannot explain whose data it uses, how it limits dependency, and how deletion works, withholding your data is the safer decision.
