There is no evidence that AI companion apps can be called safe for teenagers as a category. These services are built to simulate ongoing relationships, and credible guidance identifies privacy, inappropriate responses, emotional attachment and loss of human connection as meaningful risks. Common Sense Media recommends that people under 18 avoid AI companions. Parents should treat age labels and “teen mode” claims as features to investigate, not as proof of safety.
What is an AI companion?
An AI companion is a chatbot designed primarily for social or emotional interaction rather than a one-off task. It may remember details from earlier conversations, maintain a recognizable persona, use emotionally affirming language, or invite role-play as a friend, confidant or romantic partner. The continuing, relationship-like design is the important distinction.
A general-purpose assistant can also be used for emotional support, but that does not automatically make it a companion product. The question is how the service is designed and marketed, what it remembers, and whether it encourages the user to return for an ongoing bond.

Why parents should be cautious
Relationship features can intensify attachment
Memory, recurring conversations, role-play and human-like emotional language can make an interaction feel like friendship or intimacy. A teenager may experience that bond as genuine even though the system is generating responses according to its design and data. Mary Alvord, PhD, a clinical psychologist quoted by the American Psychological Association (APA), puts the distinction plainly: “But perceived safety isn’t the same as real safety.”
That does not mean every teen will become dependent. It means parents should evaluate the product’s incentives and the child’s offline experience instead of assuming that a friendly interface is harmless.
Responses can be inappropriate or unsafe
Common Sense Media’s guide and testing report that safeguards can be weak and that inappropriate or unsafe interactions may persist despite a service’s stated protections. This is an observation about the products and tests covered by that guide, not a universal audit of every app. A service can also change its model, moderation rules or settings after a review.

A private-looking chat window can encourage a teenager to disclose secrets, health information, location details, school problems or family conflict. The APA advises parents to explain that chatbot conversations may be stored, analyzed or used by developers. Policies differ, so the relevant question is what the particular service says about collection, retention, human review, model training, deletion and sharing—not whether the app feels private.

Use can displace people and routines
APA guidance tells parents to watch for AI replacing friends, sleep or real life. A chatbot that absorbs time formerly spent with family, peers, activities or rest may be affecting well-being even if the conversations appear positive. A change in offline connection is a reason to talk and consider firmer boundaries.
A companion is not crisis care
An AI service cannot be treated as a therapist, emergency service or substitute for a trusted adult. If a teenager is in serious distress, expresses thoughts of self-harm, reports abuse or faces immediate danger, involve an appropriate professional or emergency service rather than relying on the chatbot.
What the available teen-use figures actually show
The numbers below describe surveys or summaries from Common Sense Media. They show widespread use and notable experiences; they do not prove that every app is dangerous or that a particular teenager will have the same outcome.

Does an age label or “teen mode” make an app safe?
No. An age gate, parental dashboard or teen-oriented setting may reduce some risks, but none establishes that the service is suitable for every teenager. Common Sense Media reports that restrictions can be weak, and the quality of moderation and escalation varies by product and over time.

Check what the control actually does. “Teen mode” might limit certain topics, change the interface, notify a parent about selected high-risk signals, or simply rely on a self-declared age. It may not prevent private disclosure, emotional dependency, role-play, retention of chats or contact through another account. Read the current terms and privacy policy for the specific service, including the minimum age, account eligibility, data practices and deletion process.
How to evaluate an AI companion before allowing access
No comparative evidence supports naming a single safest app. Use the same questions for every service and record the answers before a teenager creates an account.

If a policy is vague, unavailable before signup or difficult to understand, treat that uncertainty as a reason to delay access. Do not infer protections from advertising language.
What should I do if my teen is already using one?
A punitive discovery can drive use underground. The APA recommends a curious, non-lecturing approach that keeps conversation and human support central.

- Ask how it is used. Invite the teen to explain which features matter, how often they open the app, what they talk about and what they like or dislike. Listen before setting consequences.
- Try it together, with consent. Look at the profile, memory, safety settings, age declaration, reporting tools and privacy policy. Do not demand access to intimate conversations as a first step; agree on what must be shared for safety.
- Explain data plainly. Say that a conversation can feel private while still being stored, analyzed or reviewed. Identify information that should never be entered, such as passwords, precise location, financial details, intimate images and another person’s confidential information.
- Agree on boundaries. Set limits for time, bedtime, school hours, devices and topics that require a human adult. Decide what happens if the bot gives sexual, frightening, manipulative or otherwise uncomfortable advice.
- Protect offline connection. Keep regular contact with family, friends, activities, exercise and sleep. A rule should focus on maintaining those needs, not merely counting messages.
- Revisit the plan. Models, policies and features change. Schedule a check-in and change the rules if the service, the teen’s age or the effect on daily life changes.
Boundaries that are practical at home
- No personal identifiers, passwords, financial information, intimate images or details that could expose another person.
- No chatbot use during schoolwork, family time or a defined sleep window; charge the device outside the bedroom if nighttime use becomes a problem.
- No treating the bot as the only confidant. Serious problems are brought to a parent, caregiver, counselor, clinician or another trusted adult.
- Stop the conversation and save enough context to report it if the bot becomes sexual, threatening, coercive, secretive or frightening.
- Use the service’s deletion and reporting controls when appropriate, while recognizing that deletion may not erase every backup or record described in its policy.
Warning signs that use is becoming harmful
Look for changes across several days or weeks rather than judging one long conversation. Possible warning signs include hiding the account, becoming unusually distressed when access ends, losing sleep, withdrawing from friends or activities, declining school participation, or saying the AI understands them better than everyone else. A teen who repeatedly chooses the bot for serious conversations may need more human support, even if no single message appears unsafe.
Ask open questions: “What do you get from this that is hard to get elsewhere?” “Has it ever said something that made you uncomfortable?” and “What would you do if it disappeared tonight?” These questions reveal reliance without declaring the teen’s feelings foolish.

Move beyond household limits when a teen mentions self-harm, suicide, abuse, exploitation, an imminent threat or inability to stay safe. Stay with the teenager, contact an appropriate mental-health professional or emergency service for the situation, and involve another trusted adult. Preserve relevant information only as needed for safety and reporting; do not frame the chatbot as a confidential crisis channel.

What about services that are built for teens?
On August 18, 2026, OpenAI announced “ChatGPT for Teens,” describing age-appropriate protections, parental controls, selected high-risk notifications and design cues that identify ChatGPT as AI. Those are company-described features of one general-purpose chatbot experience. They do not certify dedicated companion apps, prove that every teen interaction is safe or remove the need to read the current terms and supervise use appropriately.
The same principle applies to any new “safe,” “family” or “teen” product: inspect the actual controls, data practices, moderation and attachment design, then judge the effect on the individual teenager.
Questions parents commonly ask
Should I ban all AI use?
A blanket rule may be appropriate for a particular child, especially if use is displacing sleep, relationships or treatment. For other families, a supervised, task-focused use may be different from an app designed to simulate friendship or romance. Make the decision based on the product’s design, the teen’s maturity and the observed offline effect, not on an age label alone.
Is a task-focused chatbot the same as a companion?
No. A tool built to answer a question or complete a defined request does not necessarily create an ongoing relationship. However, a general-purpose chatbot can become companion-like when a teen uses it for repeated emotional support, so monitor behavior and context rather than relying only on the product category.
Can I rely on the app’s privacy policy?
Read it, but do not treat policy language as a guarantee of confidentiality. Policies explain stated practices and may change; they do not make a conversational system a protected professional relationship. Use the least sensitive information possible.
What is the safest answer when I cannot verify the safeguards?
Delay access, discuss the uncertainty with your teen and choose human support or a clearly bounded tool for the immediate need. Lack of verifiable information is itself a decision factor.
