Yes—1080p TVs can still be good when you want a small screen, sit far enough away, or mainly watch HD and lower-resolution content. But in 2026, 1080p models are rare and mostly small, so they are a limited choice for a new TV. Whether 4K is worth choosing depends on screen size, viewing distance, price, and picture features—not resolution alone.
What do 1080p and 4K mean?
1080p, also called Full HD, has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. 4K UHD has 3840 × 2160 pixels, or four times as many pixels in total. Sony’s support documentation describes the difference as about two million pixels for 1080p versus more than eight million for 4K: Sony’s 1080p and 4K resolution explanation.
More pixels can show finer detail, but they do not guarantee a better-looking picture on their own. Screen size, viewing distance, the quality of the source, and the TV’s picture processing all affect what you see.
Can you see the difference between 1080p and 4K?
Sometimes. The larger the screen and the closer you sit, the more likely the extra detail in a 4K image is to be visible. At greater distances or on a smaller screen, the difference may be hard to notice.

RTINGS gives one illustrative example: a person with perfect vision may not distinguish a 65-inch 1080p TV from a 65-inch 4K TV at 10 feet, while 4K detail may become noticeable at about 8 feet and closer. Those are source-specific reference points, not a universal cutoff; vision, content, and viewing conditions vary. See RTINGS’ TV size and viewing-distance guide for the factors involved.
Are 1080p TVs still a practical purchase in 2026?
They remain a plausible fit for a specific small-screen need, but they are a narrow category for a new purchase. RTINGS’ March 2026 resolution guide describes 1080p sets as rare, with remaining examples mostly 20–32 inches, while 4K TVs are very common. Availability can differ by location and retailer. Check current listings rather than assuming a particular size or model is in stock.

For an existing 1080p TV, rarity in the new-TV market is not a reason by itself to replace a set that still meets your needs. If you are buying, compare the actual 1080p options available with similarly sized 4K sets, including their prices and features.

How to decide whether 1080p is good enough
Use your normal viewing setup and the content you actually watch. These factors are more useful than treating resolution as the only measure of quality:
Rank #3
- 1080p Resolution: Watch movies and TV shows in high-definition picture quality.
- LED-backlit LCD screen: With reliable and long-lasting LED lighting, this LCD screen delivers a wide range of colors and contrast for a memorable viewing experience.
- Watch what you want: Stream over 1.5 million movies and TV episodes. Watch favorites with subscriptions to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and more. Subscription fees may apply.
- All your entertainment in one place: Watch live and free TV, play video games, and stream music.
- Smart and always getting smarter: Fire TV adds new Alexa skills, features, smart home capabilities, and voice functionality all the time.
- Screen size and seating distance: A small screen or a farther seat makes 1080p more likely to be sufficient. A large screen or close seating makes 4K’s additional detail more likely to matter.
- Content sources: If most of your viewing is HD or lower-resolution video, 1080p can suit that material. A 4K TV can upscale lower-resolution content to fit its panel, but it cannot turn the source into native 4K; the result depends on the TV’s processing.
- Price and availability: Compare current local listings. The available evidence does not establish that 1080p TVs are categorically cheaper or better value, and a rare model may not be the best deal.
- Other picture features: Consider the TV’s overall picture quality and processing, not just its pixel count. HDR is separate from resolution: it concerns color and luminance, and an HDR label by itself does not show how well a TV displays HDR.
For a more detailed explanation of lower-resolution image handling, see RTINGS’ upscaling and sharpness test guide.

| Your situation | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Small screen, farther seating, mostly HD or lower-resolution viewing | 1080p may be good enough if an available set fits your needs and its price and features compare favorably. |
| Large screen or close seating | 4K is more likely to make its extra detail visible. |
| Mostly lower-resolution sources, but considering a 4K TV | Check the TV’s upscaling performance; the output is still based on a lower-resolution source. |
| Buying a new TV without a strict small-screen requirement | Compare actual 4K options as well as any 1080p listings, since 1080p choices are rare in the 2026 market context described by RTINGS. |
There is no universal winner for every room. Compare the same screen size where possible, then factor in your normal seat distance, content, current price, and picture features.
