An Arduino Uno can run a basic star tracker: it can drive a stepper motor slowly enough to move a camera mount against the sky’s apparent motion. The difficult part is not simply choosing a motor delay. You must match the motor, driver, gearing or threaded-rod mechanism, and firmware to one design, then align the tracker’s axis with the celestial pole.

What an Arduino star tracker does

Earth’s rotation makes stars appear to move across the sky. A star tracker turns a camera mount in the opposite direction so stars stay more nearly fixed in the frame during a long exposure. Arduino Team’s 2023 overview describes a single-stepper, geared design mounted on a standard tripod, with the user setting an angle for their location.

A tracker is not the same as a GoTo mount. Basic tracking moves at a rate intended to follow the sky; GoTo systems also calculate and command movement toward selected objects. A simple one-axis tracker is within the scope of the Uno-based examples described here. A more complex telescope GoTo project discussed below calls for a different board because its firmware exceeds Uno memory.

Choose a complete build before buying parts

The documented designs use different motors, drivers, and mechanical arrangements. Treat each as a matched system: swapping one component can change the motion, wiring, code, or all three. Compare the build paths by fabrication, complexity, and what they are designed to move.

Build path Documented hardware and construction What to consider
Barn-door tracker Arduino Uno, stepper motor, ULN2003 driver array, gears and threaded rod in the Emvilza Arduino Project Hub design. Hardik Patil’s 2021 project describes a three-plate chassis, curved threaded rod, belt drive, Uno, ULN2003, and 28BYJ-48 stepper. A practical plate-and-rod route, but the hinge, rod path, and drive geometry determine the tracking rate. Follow one project’s mechanical plan and matching code rather than combining parts from both designs casually.
3D-printed geared tracker Arduino Team’s OG-star-tracker overview describes an Uno driving one stepper through a TMC2209 driver, with a gearbox reducing output speed; the assembly mounts on a standard tripod. Requires suitable printed parts and a gearbox. Arduino describes the project documentation as rough and points readers to its project files for build details.
Two-axis tracker OpenAstroTracker is described as a 3D-printed Uno-controlled mount with two steppers, a 16×2 display/keypad shield, and optional Bluetooth. More axes and controls mean more assembly and firmware complexity than a basic single-axis camera tracker.
Telescope GoTo project A separate repository specifies a Mega2560, two NEMA 17 motors, A4988 drivers, an RTC, and additional parts; it says Uno memory is insufficient for that implementation. This is a particular, substantially more complex GoTo build—not evidence that an Uno cannot run a simple star tracker.

What to verify in a design

  • That its firmware targets the exact board and motor driver you plan to use.
  • That its motor, gear reduction, threaded-rod pitch, and linkage geometry are specified together.
  • That the camera mount and tripod interface suit your camera setup. The cited overviews do not establish a universal payload rating.
  • Whether you can fabricate the required plates or printed components and assemble them accurately.

How to set the tracking rate

The tracker’s right-ascension axis—or the hinge axis on a barn-door design—must point toward the celestial pole. The motor then has to move the camera at the correct rate in the opposite direction to the sky’s apparent motion. Patil’s project account describes the motion as roughly 15° per hour. That rounded figure explains the goal; it is not a motor step interval that can be copied directly.

The required step timing depends on the complete drive train: motor steps per revolution, any microstepping setting, gear reduction, threaded-rod pitch, and the linkage geometry. A change to any of these can change how much the camera moves per motor step. Calculate or use the rate specified for the exact mechanism you build, and verify that the driver configuration and firmware agree.

Patil reports deriving the rate for his particular mechanism and using a 575 µs step delay. That value belongs to his build; it is not a general Uno setting. Applying it to another tracker without recalculating can make the camera move too quickly or too slowly.

Align the tracker before taking exposures

  1. Set up the mount securely. Use the tripod interface and camera attachment specified by your design, and keep the assembly stable.
  2. Point the tracking axis at the celestial pole. For a barn-door tracker this is the hinge axis; for other equatorial-style designs it is the right-ascension axis. The appropriate direction depends on your location and observing conditions.
  3. Set the rate for your actual mechanism. Use the project’s matching firmware and mechanical configuration, or recalculate for any changes to motor, driver settings, gearing, rod, or linkage.
  4. Check direction and motion before a long exposure. Confirm that the camera moves opposite the apparent sky motion and that the mechanism moves smoothly. If stars trail, investigate alignment and rate rather than assuming the board is incapable.

What performance and cost figures really mean

There is no controlled, cross-design accuracy or exposure-length comparison in the cited project material. Arduino Team’s 2019 overview reports that a separate two-stepper rig tracked for at least four minutes. That is a project-specific report, not a performance guarantee for other designs or a comparative test.

Patil’s 2021 account reports a finished-prototype cost of around $40. It is a historical project-reported figure, not a current parts estimate. The cited sources do not establish current prices or a standardized success rate for DIY Arduino trackers.

Can the Uno handle your project?

For the documented basic one-stepper examples, the Uno is used as the controller. The limiting question is whether the chosen firmware fits the board and supports the exact motion-control hardware. Do not generalize the memory limitation of the cited telescope GoTo repository to simpler tracking projects: that repository itself specifies a Mega2560, while the simpler examples use an Uno.

If your goal includes two-axis motion, displays, wireless controls, or GoTo features, check the firmware’s stated board requirements before building. The OpenAstroTracker description is an Uno-based two-axis example; the separate GoTo repository is not. Their differing requirements show why board suitability is project-specific.
