BuildFolio can turn your Arduino project notes into a personal portfolio: write and preview the site in a browser, export its files as a ZIP, then publish those files through a static hosting provider. Its repository describes the tool as client-side, says it autosaves typed content in browser local storage, and lists Netlify, Vercel, and GitHub Pages as hosting options. Arduino Project Hub offers a separate route for sharing individual project tutorials and descriptions with its community.
How BuildFolio takes a project from notes to a site
BuildFolio describes itself as a browser-based portfolio generator. According to its project repository, it requires no sign-up, saves typed content in browser local storage, and exports a ZIP containing generated HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The workflow is therefore a content-and-publishing process; the repository does not describe a need to purchase additional Arduino hardware to use BuildFolio.
- Collect the details of your builds. Gather the notes, images, code links, and component information you want to present before entering content.
- Build and preview the portfolio in your browser. Add your project material and review how the pages read and look. The repository says typed content is saved in local storage, so it is associated with the browser rather than an account-based cloud service.
- Export the site. Use BuildFolio’s ZIP export to obtain the generated site files.
- Extract and publish the files. BuildFolio’s repository says to extract the ZIP and upload the resulting files to a static hosting provider. It names Netlify Drop, Vercel, and GitHub Pages as options; these are the project’s recommendations, not independently tested deployment instructions.
Because the content is saved in browser local storage, keep a separate copy of important project text and assets while you work. An exported ZIP is also useful to retain as a copy of the generated site.
What to put in an Arduino project portfolio
A portfolio entry should let someone understand what you made, how it works, and what you learned without requiring them to reconstruct the project from a title or photo alone. The following is an editorial checklist, not a formal Arduino or BuildFolio requirement:
#1 Best Overall
- 35+ Guided Electronics Projects: Progress from LEDs and buttons to RFID access, real-time clocks, motion and distance sensing, environmental monitoring, motor control and interactive displays for STEM learning, coding clubs and maker projects
- More I/O and Memory for Larger Builds: The MEGA 2560 R3 provides 54 digital I/O pins, including 15 PWM outputs, 16 analog inputs, 4 hardware serial ports and 256 KB flash for projects that combine more sensors, controls and displays
- 200+ Components for Prototyping: Includes LCD1602, RC522 RFID, RTC, DHT11, HC-SR501 PIR, ultrasonic and water-level sensors, GY-521, MAX7219, keypad, joystick, rotary encoder, relay, SG90 servo, stepper motor, DC motor, breadboard and more
- Learn, Modify and Create: Follow 35+ guided lessons with example code, then adjust sensor thresholds, timing, display text, motor behavior and control logic to turn structured exercises into access systems, monitors, alarms and interactive projects
- Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects
- Purpose: State the problem, experiment, or idea behind the build.
- Board and components: Identify the Arduino board and the main sensors, actuators, or other parts. Link to model-specific documentation when a reader needs technical details; Arduino Docs is the official starting point for hardware, software, programming, Cloud, and community resources.
- Code: Include the relevant code or link to its repository, and note any setup details needed to understand it.
- Build steps: Explain the meaningful wiring, assembly, and configuration steps, especially anything that is not obvious from the images.
- Outcome: Show what the finished build does, using a clear result, demonstration, or observation where appropriate.
- Original photos: Use well-lit images that show the build itself and, when useful, important wiring or details. Add captions so readers know what they are seeing.
Apply the same editorial standard across projects: consistent titles, concise summaries, and enough context to distinguish an early experiment from a finished build. A portfolio becomes easier to browse when each entry follows a recognizable pattern.
BuildFolio or Arduino Project Hub?
The two routes serve different publishing goals. BuildFolio’s repository describes a generator for a personal site that you export and host; Arduino describes Project Hub as a community site for sharing tutorials and descriptions. The comparison below is an editorial distinction drawn from those descriptions, not a claim that one route replaces the other.
Rank #2
- TURN CODE INTO REAL-WORLD RESULTS — Follow 22+ guided lessons to make LEDs blink, read temperature and distance, move servo and stepper motors, control an LCD and respond to joystick or IR input; ideal for a family weekend build, homeschool unit, coding club or STEM classroom
- MORE PROJECT VARIETY IN ONE ORGANIZED KIT — Includes the UNO R3 controller, LCD1602 with pre-soldered header, breadboard power module, ultrasonic and DHT11 sensors, joystick, IR receiver and remote, SG90 servo, stepper motor, relay, DC motor, fan blade, displays, LEDs, buttons, resistors and jumper wires
- START WITHOUT SOLDERING — Plug-in modules, a solderless breadboard and the pre-soldered LCD help beginners focus on wiring, code and testing; the illustrated component list makes it easier to find each part and move from one lesson to the next
- LEARN THE LOGIC, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN — Use Arduino IDE and the included example code to understand digital input and output, analog sensing, timing, motor control and display functions, then change thresholds, speeds and sequences for alarms, environmental monitors, reaction games and motion projects
- CLEAR SETUP SUPPORT FOR FIRST-TIME BUILDERS — Download the latest tutorial and code, select the UNO board and correct computer port, check component polarity and breadboard rows, and keep power-module input at 9V or below; younger learners should work with an experienced adult
| Question | BuildFolio personal site | Arduino Project Hub |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | Collect multiple builds under one maker’s identity on a personal portfolio. | Share a project tutorial or description in Arduino’s community venue. |
| How publishing works | Preview and export site files, then arrange hosting for the static files. | Create an account and submit a project; Arduino says submissions are assessed against content guidelines before publication. |
| Control and discovery | You manage the exported site and its hosting; discovery depends on how you share the site. | You submit to a platform organized around community project sharing, subject to its review process. |
| Platform scope | A personal portfolio can present your builds together, regardless of whether each is submitted elsewhere. | Arduino Help Center says compatible projects made with other microcontroller platforms, including ESP32 and Raspberry Pi, can also be supported. |
These routes can complement each other: use a personal portfolio to bring your work together, and consider Project Hub when you want to submit an individual tutorial or project description to Arduino’s community. Arduino’s Help Center description and submission guidance explains its account and assessment process.

Project Hub is an established publishing venue, but its annual figures should not be confused with all submissions, current project totals, or BuildFolio use. Arduino’s 2024 Open Source Report says 368 new open-source tutorials were added during 2024, 80% more than in 2023. Arduino specifies that this counts projects approved and published after quality review and moderation, not every submission. Its 2023 report records 205 new open-source tutorials added that year, also counting approved and published projects.

The Project Hub landing page shows examples in formats including tutorials, showcases, and getting-started projects, and its visible project count can change over time. Treat that page as a view of current examples, not a stable measure of the platform’s size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need an Arduino starter kit?
No kit is required for the BuildFolio workflow described by its repository: it runs in the browser and generates a portfolio site. An Arduino starter kit is relevant only if you still need hardware to make the projects you plan to document. Arduino’s official documentation provides a starting point for checking hardware and software information, but the sources cited here do not establish a particular kit model, price, or availability.
