Neither headset is an evidence-backed universal winner. Choose Arctis GameBuds for Xbox if you want in-ear earbuds, active noise cancellation (ANC), transparency mode, a charging case and quick switching between Xbox wireless and a phone. Choose the Xbox Wireless Headset if you prefer an over-ear design, a bendable boom microphone and physical game/chat and volume dials. Those recommendations are based on the manufacturers’ documented features, not hands-on comparative testing of sound, comfort or microphone quality.

The short answer

Arctis GameBuds and the Xbox Wireless Headset solve different problems. GameBuds are compact in-ear earbuds that use a 2.4 GHz USB-C gaming dongle for Xbox and Bluetooth 5.3 for mobile devices. They add hybrid ANC, transparency mode, a charging case and earbud controls. The Xbox Wireless Headset is a conventional over-ear model with cushioned earcups, an adjustable headband, a bendable boom microphone and dedicated physical dials for game/chat balance and volume.

For a player who dislikes earcups or regularly plays near background noise, the GameBuds feature set is the more relevant match. For someone who wants a familiar headset fit and can adjust chat balance without opening a menu, Microsoft’s headset is the more direct choice. Official product pages do not provide a controlled comparison of audio quality, comfort, latency, durability or chat clarity, so claims that one sounds, fits or performs better should not be treated as established facts.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not equivalent laboratory measurements. In particular, do not interpret the advertised battery figures as proof that the Xbox headset lasts twice as long in identical real-world use.

Form factor: earbuds or over-ear cups?

What the GameBuds design means

GameBuds place the speakers inside your ear canals and ship with small, medium and large eartips. That gives you a compact setup with no headband and no earcups around your ears. Tip size is important: the supplied sizes let you try to create a stable seal, but the official product information does not establish how comfortable that seal will be for a particular ear shape or how well it will remain in place during long sessions.

The earbuds store and recharge in their case, making them easier to carry than a full-size headset. Their in-ear format also makes the case a required part of the charging routine; you cannot simply hang the earbuds on a stand and leave them connected as you might with an over-ear headset.

What the Xbox Wireless Headset design means

Microsoft’s headset uses an adjustable headband and cushioned earcups in an over-ear layout. The documented weight is 11 ounces (320 grams). It has a bendable boom, so you can move the microphone toward or away from your mouth and mute it with the headset’s control. The published specifications do not provide a comparative comfort test, clamping-force measurement or long-session assessment.

Over-ear controls are physically larger and easier to locate without looking. The trade-off is a larger object to carry and a headband-and-earcup fit that may not suit people who prefer earbuds, wear glasses or dislike having their ears enclosed. Those are personal fit considerations rather than performance conclusions.

How each headset connects to an Xbox

Setting up Arctis GameBuds

  1. Connect the included 2.4 GHz gaming dongle to the Xbox. The dongle uses USB-C; use the included USB-C-to-USB-A converter if the available console port or setup requires USB-A.
  2. Turn on the earbuds and select the 2.4 GHz gaming connection. SteelSeries describes the Xbox dongle connection as plug-and-play.
  3. Install the companion app on a supported mobile device if you want to change game presets, spatial-audio options or other available settings. The product page describes more than 100 Xbox audio presets.
  4. For a phone, pair the earbuds over Bluetooth 5.3. SteelSeries documents quick switching between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth with a triple tap of an earbud.

The GameBuds page lists Xbox, PC, PlayStation 5, Switch, VR, tablets and other devices as compatible. Compatibility does not mean every platform exposes identical controls or audio features; the Xbox-specific dongle connection is the relevant path for Xbox play.

Setting up the Xbox Wireless Headset

  1. Turn on the headset and use its Xbox Wireless pairing process with an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console.
  2. Use the headset’s power/pair and mute buttons as needed. The left earcup carries the game/chat balance dial, while the right earcup carries the volume dial.
  3. Pair a phone over Bluetooth 5.3 if you want phone audio or chat. Microsoft says the headset can remain connected to the console while paired to a phone, allowing phone chat while you play.
  4. Open the Xbox Accessories app when you want to adjust equalizer settings, bass boost, auto-mute, LED brightness or mic monitoring.

Microsoft lists support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows 11, in addition to Bluetooth mobile use.

Phone use and switching between devices

Both products include Bluetooth 5.3, but their documented workflows differ. GameBuds emphasize a quick manual switch: a triple tap changes between the 2.4 GHz gaming link and Bluetooth. That is useful when the same earbuds move between an Xbox and a phone during the day.

The Xbox Wireless Headset is documented for simultaneous phone-and-console pairing. Microsoft specifically describes using phone chat while playing on the console. That makes it a better fit if your priority is keeping a phone conversation active without abandoning the Xbox connection. The documentation does not establish that either product supports every phone-call, notification or app-mixing scenario, so check the behavior of the specific phone and operating-system version you use.

Microphones and physical controls

GameBuds controls

GameBuds use built-in microphones and buttons on the earbuds. SteelSeries describes controls for volume, mute and calls. Because the microphones are integrated into the earbuds rather than placed on a bendable boom, their position follows the fit of the earbuds in your ears. The official product information does not include an independent voice-recording test or a comparative chat-quality result.

Xbox Wireless Headset controls

The Xbox Wireless Headset has a bendable boom with dual microphones. Its physical layout is unusually direct: a game/chat balance dial is on the left earcup, a volume dial is on the right, and separate power/pair and mute controls are provided. This lets you change the balance or volume by touch instead of reaching for an on-screen menu. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that the boom sounds clearer than the GameBuds’ microphones; it only specifies the different hardware and controls.

If you frequently change the game-to-chat mix during multiplayer sessions, the Xbox headset’s dedicated dial is the more relevant feature. If you want no protruding boom and prefer an earbud-style silhouette, GameBuds remove that hardware at the cost of relying on their built-in microphones and buttons.

Noise control, transparency and spatial audio

GameBuds: ANC and transparency

GameBuds list hybrid ANC and a transparency mode. ANC is intended to reduce outside sound, while transparency passes more of the surrounding environment through the earbuds. The product page also lists 360-degree spatial audio and game presets in the companion app. SteelSeries describes more than 100 Xbox audio presets, which can be useful if you want to start from a profile tailored to a particular game rather than adjust an equalizer from scratch.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Those are feature listings, not measurements of noise reduction, positional accuracy or sound quality. The available documentation does not say how much external noise ANC removes in a particular room or whether one preset is objectively better than another.

Xbox Wireless Headset: Xbox spatial formats

Microsoft lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X support on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Spatial effects depend on compatible content and the console’s audio settings. Microsoft says Dolby Atmos is available at no extra cost with this headset. DTS may require additional purchases, an app download and supported hardware, according to Microsoft’s product information.

The Xbox Accessories app provides equalizer settings, bass boost, auto-mute, LED-brightness and mic-monitoring controls. These options give you a way to tune the headset, but they do not constitute a published comparison with GameBuds’ presets or spatial mode. Choose based on the controls and format support you actually plan to use.

Battery and charging differences

GameBuds estimate

SteelSeries publishes up to 10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours total with the charging case. The 10-hour figure is qualified: it is based on a 2.4 GHz connection with noise control turned off. Using ANC, transparency or other features can change actual runtime. The case supports USB-C charging and Qi wireless charging.

Xbox Wireless Headset estimate

Microsoft publishes up to 20 hours per charge. It also states that 30 minutes of charging provides about four hours of use and that a full charge takes about three hours when the headset is not in use. Microsoft warns that battery life can vary substantially with distance from the console, additional accessories, usage and other factors, and notes that its testing used pre-production units.

The figures are therefore not a controlled head-to-head test. GameBuds offer a case-based charging system and a stated 40-hour total, while the Xbox headset offers a single-device estimate of up to 20 hours and a documented short-charge figure. Your choice depends on whether you prefer topping up earbuds in a case or charging one full-size headset between sessions.

Which one fits common Xbox-player priorities?

Choose Arctis GameBuds if you want earbuds first

  • You specifically prefer an in-ear fit over an over-ear headband and earcups.
  • Hybrid ANC and a transparency mode matter for the room where you play.
  • You want a compact charging case, Qi charging and USB-C charging.
  • You switch between Xbox 2.4 GHz wireless and a phone and value the documented triple-tap shortcut.
  • You want app-based game presets and 360-degree spatial-audio options.

Choose the Xbox Wireless Headset if you want a traditional headset

  • You want cushioned over-ear earcups, an adjustable headband and a bendable boom microphone.
  • You regularly change game/chat balance and volume using physical dials.
  • You want Microsoft-documented support for Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X on Xbox.
  • You need simultaneous Bluetooth phone-and-console pairing for phone chat while playing.
  • You prefer charging one headset directly rather than managing earbuds and a charging case.

When neither feature list answers the question

If your deciding factor is sound signature, long-session comfort, microphone clarity, wireless reliability in your room or durability, the cited official pages do not provide enough evidence to rank one above the other. Those questions require trustworthy independent testing or your own returnable purchase trial. Do not treat the presence of ANC, a boom microphone or a spatial-audio logo as proof of a superior result in those areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important compatibility and usage notes

  • GameBuds’ Xbox gaming connection uses the supplied USB-C dongle. Keep the included converter available if your setup needs USB-A.
  • The Xbox Wireless Headset’s published Xbox compatibility covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One; Microsoft also lists Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Bluetooth 5.3 appears on both products, but Bluetooth behavior is not identical: GameBuds document quick switching, while Microsoft documents simultaneous phone-and-console pairing.
  • Spatial-audio features require supported content and appropriate console settings. DTS may involve extra purchases, an app and supported hardware.
  • Battery numbers are estimates from each manufacturer and carry different test conditions. They should not be used as a direct endurance ranking.

What the official specifications do not establish

The available product documentation does not name a winner for audio fidelity, bass response, positional imaging, microphone intelligibility, comfort, passive isolation, ANC effectiveness, connection stability or long-term reliability. It also does not provide current prices, retailer inventory, regional availability or independent test data. Treat any review that declares one product universally better in those categories as a separate opinion or test result, not as a conclusion supported by these specifications.

Bottom line

For Xbox players deciding between these two designs, start with the fit and control scheme rather than a presumed sound-quality winner. Arctis GameBuds are the targeted choice for in-ear gaming, ANC, transparency, a case and fast phone switching. The Xbox Wireless Headset is the targeted choice for over-ear wear, a bendable boom, physical game/chat and volume dials, simultaneous phone pairing and Microsoft-documented Xbox spatial-audio support. Both can make sense; the better purchase is the one whose documented features match how you actually play.
