Archaeologists excavating the former Ottonian palatinate at Helfta, near Lutherstadt Eisleben in Saxony-Anhalt, have uncovered a stone building dating securely to the 10th century. The structure measures about 9 by 5 metres, includes a cellar and preserves its entrance staircase. Its purpose remains unknown: the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt identifies a noble guesthouse and a burgrave’s residence as possibilities, not conclusions.
What did archaeologists find at Otto the Great’s lost palace?
The discovery was announced on 12 October 2026 after an excavation that began on 31 August. The building stands beside the Ottonian palace on the Kleine Klaus hill, at the centre of Helfta’s former royal palace complex. It is one of the earliest known secular stone buildings in Helfta and in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the state heritage authority.
The remains are archaeological foundations rather than a standing palace visible above ground today. The surviving access stairs and cellar nevertheless provide unusually clear evidence of how the building was planned and entered. Associated finds place it in the 10th century, the period when Helfta functioned as a royal residence and assembly site under the Ottonian dynasty.

What was the new building at Helfta used for?
No excavation evidence has yet established a single function. The State Office presents two working interpretations:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A guesthouse for the ruler’s entourage
The building may have accommodated noble visitors accompanying the king. A separate stone structure beside the palace could have provided lodging or reception space without placing every member of an entourage inside the main royal building. Its position in the central complex is compatible with an important role, although the reported remains do not prove that it was a guesthouse.
A burgrave’s residence
Alternatively, it may have been the burgrave’s seat when the king was away. A resident official could have supervised the palatinate, its stores, defenses and workforce between royal visits. The cellar might have supported storage, but the published evidence does not identify what was kept there or demonstrate that a burgrave lived in the building.

How the building fits into Helfta’s royal centre
The new structure is part of a larger stone ensemble. Excavations from 2020 to 2023 identified the Radegund church, founded by Otto the Great before 969, and a contemporary stone palace; the State Office says the central buildings were identified in 2021 and 2022. The palace served as a royal residence and assembly hall.

East of the palace, archaeologists also exposed a stone-reinforced terrace facing the courtyard between the palace and church. The authority suggests that this platform may have hosted open-air assemblies. Because the church, palace, terrace and newly found building occupied the heart of the palatinate, their concentration would have made stone architecture a visible expression of royal status and power.
The site’s history reaches further back. The State Office connects the hill’s earlier settlement with Helphideburc, named in the ninth-century Hersfeld tithe register, while distinguishing that earlier reference from the 10th-century Ottonian palatinate. Otto the Great and his son Otto II are reported to have stayed at Helfta.

What daily life surrounded the royal buildings?
The monumental centre was supported by a less formal settlement. In the southeastern outer enclosure, excavators found additional sunken houses, generally rectangular and about 3 to 5 metres on each side. Their walls were made from wattle and clay, with roofs of wood or reed and stone-set hearths.
Objects and installations point to several kinds of work:
Best Value

- Clay loom weights indicate textile production.
- Casting crucibles indicate non-ferrous metalworking.
- A lime kiln indicates production of lime for plaster and mortar.
This combination places household activity and manufacturing alongside the royal display zone. It suggests a community that supplied the palatinate, rather than an isolated palace used only during royal appearances.
Other finds from the wider site
The excavation area has produced evidence from several periods, and these objects should not be attributed automatically to the newly uncovered building. Reported finds include cemetery graves; silver coins dating from the 10th to the 15th centuries; Ottonian earrings and enamelled clothing clasps, including an unusual crescent-shaped example; iron arrowheads; pottery decorated with Slavic wave patterns; a nearly functional bone flute; and a fragment of an antler box marked with ring-and-dot decoration, dated by the authority to around 1000.
A smaller castle later occupied the hill in the 12th century and was associated with the von Hackeborn family. The current work is also examining that castle’s courtyard and surviving building remains, so Helfta’s archaeological record spans the Ottonian royal complex and its medieval successor.
What happens next at the Helfta excavation?
The 12 October announcement said that roughly 20 volunteers were supporting the fieldwork and that the excavation was scheduled to continue through 24 October 2026. That was a plan stated at the time of the announcement, not confirmation that the season has finished. Continued work may clarify the new building’s relationship to the palace, terrace and church, and may recover deposits capable of distinguishing accommodation, administration or storage.
For now, the secure conclusions are its 10th-century date, approximate 9-by-5-metre footprint, cellar and surviving stairs, and its place within Helfta’s central stone complex. The building’s social function remains an archaeological question rather than a solved historical label.
