Archaeologists recovered 48 prehistoric arrows during the 2026 field season in Norway’s Jotunheimen mountains. The oldest arrow highlighted in the season’s report may be approximately 5,000–6,000 years old, although that range is a comparative estimate rather than a newly published radiocarbon date. The finds came from several high-mountain ice patches in Innlandet, including Langfonne, Storefonne and Hanklefonne.
What was found, and where
The Secrets of the Ice/Glacial Archaeology Programme recovered 48 arrows as melting exposed archaeological material in eastern Norway’s Jotunheimen range. Fieldwork covered multiple ice patches rather than one single discovery point. The official Museum of Cultural History report names Langfonne, Storefonne and Hanklefonne among the areas investigated.
One newly highlighted arrow has a slate head and surviving sections of its wooden shaft. Programme archaeologists estimate it at about 5,000–6,000 years old by comparing it with previously dated arrows. Programme leader Espen Finstad told Science Norway, “This year, we found 48 prehistoric arrows. That’s a lot.” More than 100 arrowheads and shafts have now been recovered from a single ice patch over the years.
How old are the arrows?
The rounded “5,000–6,000 years old” wording describes the current season’s estimate. It should not be read as a single new radiocarbon measurement announced with the 48-arrow recovery.

A peer-reviewed study of Langfonne provides the more precise radiocarbon framework for that site: 68 arrows and five isolated arrowheads date to 6180–680 calibrated years BP. (“BP” means years before present in radiocarbon reporting.) The earliest activity at Langfonne falls around 6200–5700 calibrated years BP. Langfonne is described in that study as the world’s most arrow-rich known ice-patch site.

- Early arrows: Slate, freshwater mussel shell and bone were used for arrowheads. The oldest examples can retain pieces of their wooden shafts, but some early shafts survive only as short fragments.
- Later arrows: Iron arrowheads appear in finds roughly 1,000–1,500 years old, marking a much later technological phase than the stone, shell and bone equipment.
- Other preserved materials: Ice has also protected hide, sinew, textiles, clothing, shoes and skis, creating a record that ordinary soil sites rarely preserve.
Official captions identify a bone arrowhead at approximately 5,000 years old, a freshwater-mussel-shell arrowhead at approximately 3,600 years old and iron arrowheads approximately 1,000–1,500 years old. Those rounded ages are descriptive labels for individual finds, not a single sequence in which every recovered arrow has been independently dated.

Why melting ice can preserve arrows—and destroy them
Frozen protection
Stable ice can isolate organic objects from oxygen, microbes and many of the physical processes that normally destroy wood, hide and textiles. That is why an arrow shaft, clothing fragment or piece of sinew can emerge after thousands of years in a condition that would be unlikely in an ordinary archaeological deposit.

Damage after exposure
The protective conditions end when an object emerges. The Langfonne study describes fragmentation and loss from ice deformation, transport by meltwater, abrasive sediment, repeated freeze–thaw cycles, moisture, trampling and temperature changes. Several very early shafts were recovered only in short pieces, with no preserved tar, sinew or fletching. An object that looks intact at first can therefore deteriorate rapidly unless specialists document, stabilize and store it.
What the site says about reindeer hunting
The arrows are part of a wider hunting landscape, not isolated curiosities. The programme reports extensive evidence of reindeer and reindeer hunting around the ice patches, together with clothing, shoes, packhorse remains and skis. At Langfonne, researchers recorded 290 animal remains; 97 percent were reindeer.

The long chronology indicates repeated human use rather than one short-lived episode. Hunters could exploit animals concentrated near seasonal ice and return to the same high-mountain areas over many generations. Arrowheads and shaft fragments therefore preserve both individual hunting attempts and a record of movement, equipment and adaptation across thousands of years.
Why the discoveries are also a climate warning
Melting makes new finds visible, but it removes the environment that preserved them. The Museum of Cultural History’s programme says the ice is disappearing faster than expected and that many monitored archaeological ice-patch sites may be completely gone within 20 years. That is a projection about the monitored archaeological landscape, not a universal timetable for every glacier or ice patch.

Finstad described the 2026 season in unusually stark terms: “This year, there was a much deeper sense of seriousness and sadness. Only patches of ice remain where we once had large ice patches. It’s brutal. And this year, that reality struck us more forcefully than ever before.” The programme summarizes its position this way: “We have been at the edge of the ice. We have seen it happening. And we are witnesses to a rapidly changing archaeological landscape.”
The practical implication is urgency. Archaeologists must survey exposed margins, recover objects before meltwater and weather destroy them, record their exact contexts and move them into controlled conservation. Every season can reveal important evidence while simultaneously shrinking the archive that made its survival possible.
Can visitors see the arrows?
Selected finds are displayed in a refrigerated case at the Norwegian Mountain Centre in Lom as part of the Frozen in Time exhibition. Recovered objects become part of the Museum of Cultural History collections. Display arrangements, opening hours and any ticket or partner requirements can change, so check the Norwegian Mountain Centre’s current visitor information before travelling.

Taken together, the 48-arrow season and the Langfonne chronology show why Norwegian ice patches matter: they preserve technology, subsistence and travel across millennia, but only if exposed objects are found and conserved before the remaining ice—and the evidence within it—is lost.
