A 16-meter warship preserved beneath the seabed at ancient Phanagoria offers rare physical evidence of how Mithridates VI Eupator’s navy was built, armed and maintained. Archaeologists identify it as a fast sailing-and-rowing unireme from the middle of the first century BCE—the oldest warship found in Russian waters—and its construction reveals defenses against the sea’s relentless attacks on wood.
What archaeologists found at Phanagoria
Underwater archaeologists discovered the wreck in 2012 in the submerged harbor of Phanagoria, in Taman Bay. More than 1.5 meters of sand, silt and shells covered the surviving hull. A peer-reviewed study by E. A. Greshnikov and colleagues reports a hull about 16 meters long. Radiocarbon analysis dates the timbers to the middle of the first century BCE.
The hull form indicated a military vessel, but the strongest identification clue was found nearby: a bronze naval ram bearing Mithridates VI’s distinctive symbols. The combination of military hull design, dating and the ram links the wreck to Mithridates’ fleet rather than to an ordinary merchant ship.

The vessel is classified as a fast sailing-and-rowing ship with one row of oars, known as a unireme. An initial announcement called it a bireme, but the later study’s reconstruction identifies a single oar bank. Greshnikov and colleagues describe the evidence as convincingly identifying “a high-speed sailing and rowing ship with one row of oars (unireme)” that formed part of Mithridates VI Eupator’s navy.

Researchers regard it as the oldest warship found in Russian waters. That designation refers to the archaeological find location and the vessel’s date, not to a claim that it was the oldest warship ever built anywhere.
How the ship was identified as Mithridates’
The ram and its royal imagery
The bronze ram is about 89 centimeters long and weighs 15.6 kilograms. Its surface carries five-pointed stars and crescents associated with Mithridates VI. Those emblems provide a direct political connection that the hull alone could not establish.
Dating and construction evidence
Radiocarbon results place the timbers in the mid-first century BCE, matching the final period of Mithridates’ reign. Hull shape supplies the military context, while the ram supplies the dynastic connection. Together, these independent clues support the fleet attribution.

What remains uncertain
The evidence identifies the ship as associated with Mithridates’ navy, but it does not name a captain, crew or individual royal passenger. Nor does it establish the vessel’s exact speed or tactical role.
The “enemy that never sleeps” was the sea itself
A wooden warship faced continuous attack from water penetration, marine growth, shipworms and fire. The Phanagoria hull preserves an unusually detailed response to those problems.

The exterior mixture should not be described as modern anti-fouling paint. It was an ancient protective treatment whose sulfur-bearing realgar worked against organisms that attack submerged wood, while wax and resin helped bind and waterproof the surface.

How the hull was fastened and repaired
A later examination of 23 metal objects from the wreck included 22 nails or nail fragments. Copper and copper-alloy fastenings appear repeatedly even though iron was cheaper and available. The pattern suggests that long-term durability mattered to the shipbuilders, although the surviving objects cannot reveal every procurement decision.

It does not indicate that the entire hull was sheathed in lead. This targeted repair strategy, together with the copper fastenings, points to a maintenance-minded construction system rather than a single protective layer applied everywhere.
What the bronze ram reveals about naval engineering
Analysis reported by Anatolian Archaeology in 2026 gives the ram an approximate composition of 91% copper, 4.7% tin and 4.3% lead. The copper-rich bronze provided a substantial, durable striking fitting without the weight and brittleness associated with some alternatives. Its 89-centimeter length and 15.6-kilogram mass show that the ship carried a purpose-built weapon integrated into the bow, not merely decorative metalwork.

The stars and crescents mattered as much archaeologically as the metal itself: they connected the weapon to Mithridates’ royal imagery and helped confirm that the hull belonged to a military craft operating under his authority.

The Phanagoria vessel is a unireme. The terms describe the number of horizontal rows of oars, not the ship’s length or whether it also carried sails.

Because the ship combined oars with a sail, “unireme” does not mean it was oar-powered only. It describes the single bank of oars in a mixed-propulsion warship.

What may have happened in 63 BCE
The wreck probably sank during the Phanagorian revolt in 63 BCE, the final year of Mithridates’ reign. This is an interpretation, not an observed fact. Researchers connect the archaeological context with Appian’s account of an uprising in which royal children were captured and a flotilla was sent from Panticapaeum to Phanagoria.
The date fits the radiocarbon evidence and the historical setting, but the wreck itself does not preserve a written statement of the battle or sinking. The safest conclusion is that the ship was lost around the time of the revolt and that the revolt offers the best-supported historical explanation.
What this wreck changes about ancient naval history
Most knowledge of Hellenistic and Pontic warships comes from literary descriptions, images and later reconstructions. Phanagoria supplies physical evidence for the less visible work that kept a wooden warship operational: sealing seams, building up the keel area, treating the exterior against marine organisms, choosing corrosion-resistant fastenings and reinforcing weak points.
The find does not provide a reliable fleet-size total or a measured performance statistic. Its value is more specific: it documents how one fast, single-oar-bank warship was built and protected, and it ties that practical engineering to Mithridates VI through a dated hull and an emblematic bronze ram.
