Official Arch Linux repositories provide the stronger default trust path. Arch package maintainers control what enters those repositories, and pacman’s documented default, SigLevel = Required TrustedOnly, rejects packages whose signatures are missing, invalid, or not trusted. The Arch User Repository (AUR) is different: it hosts user-submitted PKGBUILDs and related files that you build locally. Anyone can submit one, so you—not an AUR helper—must inspect the build and installation instructions.
That does not make every AUR package malicious or every official package harmless. It means the security boundary is different. Official packages come through Arch’s maintainer, build, and signing chain; an AUR package is community-provided code that can execute commands during building or installation. Use the official repository when an equivalent package meets your needs, and treat an AUR package as source code that requires review.
What the trust boundary actually is
When you install from an official repository, you are trusting several coordinated Arch-controlled layers: package maintainers, repository infrastructure, signing keys, and pacman’s signature checks. The package is already built and distributed through Arch infrastructure. Your main question is whether the Arch signing chain and the package’s upstream content are trustworthy.
When you use the AUR, the site is an index of community build recipes, not an official package-vetting channel. An AUR entry normally supplies a PKGBUILD, optional .install file, patches, and other build-time files. Your machine executes those instructions through makepkg or an AUR helper, downloads the declared sources, creates a package, and then installs it. The person who submitted the recipe may not be an Arch package maintainer, and the AUR listing itself does not turn the recipe into an Arch-signed package.

The practical distinction is therefore governance and execution. Official repositories reduce the amount of code you must personally audit and enforce a publisher-signature check by default. AUR use shifts primary review responsibility to you, even when the package has many votes, comments, or a long history.
Official repositories and the AUR compared
| Security or trust question | Official Arch repositories | Arch User Repository |
|---|---|---|
| Who can publish? | Arch package maintainers and developers, under repository processes. The core repository has stricter quality requirements and update signoffs. |
Any AUR user can submit a PKGBUILD and associated files. |
| What do you receive? | A prebuilt package distributed by Arch repository infrastructure. | Build instructions and source references that you review and build locally. |
| Signature path | Pacman’s documented built-in default is SigLevel = Required TrustedOnly. Missing, invalid, or untrusted package signatures fail the default policy. |
Hosting an AUR recipe does not make its source or resulting package official. You must inspect the recipe and verify its sources. |
| Who performs the principal review? | Arch maintainers and repository processes, with maintainer signoffs for updates. | The end user. Arch explicitly tells users to inspect the PKGBUILD, any .install files, and other repository files. |
| Main failure modes | A compromised maintainer, signing key, build system, mirror, or upstream source could still matter. A valid signature authenticates the trusted publisher path; it does not prove benign intent. | A malicious or hijacked PKGBUILD, install script, patch, or source reference can execute during the build or installation. Maintainer changes and orphan adoption are additional risks. |
| Best default | Prefer this option whenever it provides the software or feature you need. | Use when necessary, after manual inspection and source verification. |
Why official repository packages have a stronger default
Maintainer governance
Official repositories are maintained by Arch package maintainers rather than by arbitrary uploaders. Repository inclusion and updates pass through Arch’s package-management processes. The core repository has especially strict quality requirements and update signoffs, so an equivalent package there has a more controlled path than an AUR submission.
This governance is a risk reduction, not a mathematical guarantee. A maintainer, build host, mirror, upstream project, or signing key can be compromised. The value is that the publisher identity and update path are defined, monitored, and subject to Arch’s processes instead of being entirely your responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSignature enforcement in pacman
The pacman 7.1.0 manual dated 2026-10-15 documents the built-in default as SigLevel = Required TrustedOnly. In practical terms, pacman requires a valid signature and requires that the signing key be trusted. A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a signature from an untrusted key should stop installation under that policy rather than silently accepting the package.
Arch’s key system uses a master-key and cross-signing model. As of the Arch key page accessed on 2026-10-17, five current master keys were listed; each is held by a different developer, and packaging keys are expected to be signed by at least three master keys. This structure helps pacman establish that a package-signing key belongs in the trusted Arch path.

What a signature does—and does not—prove
A successful signature check proves that the package was signed by a key in your configured trusted chain and that the downloaded file was not altered after signing. It does not prove that the software’s source code is free of vulnerabilities, that an upstream release was harmless, or that a trusted maintainer could never make a bad change. Treat signatures as publisher authentication and integrity protection, not as a guarantee of intent.
How AUR packages are different at build and install time
The PKGBUILD is executable build logic
A PKGBUILD is a shell-style recipe. It defines metadata, source locations, checksums, and functions such as prepare(), build(), and package(). Running makepkg evaluates that logic on your system. A malicious command can therefore run before you ever receive a finished package.
Additional files matter just as much. An .install file can contain commands that run when pacman installs, upgrades, or removes the package. Patches and helper scripts can alter what is built, while source URLs determine what code is fetched. Arch’s warning is explicit: “Carefully check the PKGBUILD, any .install files, and any other files in the package’s git repository for malicious or dangerous commands.”
Why an AUR helper does not change the trust model
An AUR helper can search entries, resolve dependencies, download snapshots, show diffs, call makepkg, and install the resulting package with pacman. Those features reduce typing, but they do not turn an AUR recipe into an official package or add an Arch maintainer review. If the helper hides a changed PKGBUILD or automatically builds without giving you a chance to inspect it, convenience can make the risk harder to see.
Use pacman directly for official repositories. For AUR software, a helper is acceptable only if you keep review control: inspect the files and changes first, understand what will run, and stop when the tool cannot show you the complete recipe or diff.

What the June 2026 AUR incident demonstrates
On 2026-06-12, Arch Linux reported “a high volume of malicious package adoptions and updates” in the AUR. The notice urged users to review PKGBUILD and install-script changes, especially while the incident was active. This is evidence that malicious AUR changes are a real operational threat, not merely a theoretical concern.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The incident does not establish that every AUR package is malicious, nor does it provide a universal percentage for AUR risk. It shows why a package’s popularity, number of comments, or apparent age cannot substitute for inspecting the current files. A package can change hands, become orphaned, or receive a malicious update while retaining its old reputation.
How to inspect an AUR package before installing it
Perform the following review on every new AUR package and whenever its build files change. Do not run the build first and inspect later.
- Open the package repository. Read the complete
PKGBUILD, every.installfile, patches, and helper scripts. Do not limit yourself to the package description or comments. - Understand each command. Follow shell constructs, variables, loops, downloads, extraction commands, file copies, permission changes, and service operations. Treat an unexplained command as a reason to stop and investigate.
- Check source locations. Confirm that each URL points to the expected upstream project, uses the expected release or commit, and is appropriate for the software you intend to install. A sudden change to an unrelated host deserves extra scrutiny.
- Preserve verification. Check the listed checksums and any
validpgpkeys. Arch package guidance says not to remove checksum or PGP verification merely to make a build succeed. A request to disable verification is a stop condition until you understand why it is present. - Review maintainer history. Look at recent commits, diffs, comments, orphan status, and adoption changes. Pay particular attention to new maintainers, sudden ownership transfers, and updates that add obfuscated or unrelated shell code.
- Compare with upstream. Verify that the package version, release notes, and build options match the upstream project. If the recipe applies patches, identify what each patch changes and why it is needed.
- Build in isolation when practical. Use a disposable virtual machine, container, or separate test installation for unfamiliar recipes. Isolation limits the damage if a build script behaves maliciously, but it does not replace reading the files.
- Inspect the result before installation. After building, examine the package file list and metadata. Look for unexpected binaries, system services, startup files, users, writable paths, or files outside the software’s normal layout.
- Install only after the review. If any behavior remains unexplained, do not install. Find an official repository alternative, an upstream distribution method you can verify, or a different package with a clearer maintenance history.
Commands and a safer manual workflow
Retrieve and inspect without handing control to an automatic build
Obtain the AUR repository or snapshot, enter its directory, and read the files before invoking makepkg. A typical manual sequence is:
git clone <AUR-repository-address>cd <package-directory>less PKGBUILDand inspect every additional file in the directory.makepkg --verifysourceto fetch and verify declared sources without creating the final package.makepkg --syncdeps --rmdepsonly after you understand the recipe, then inspect the resulting package before installation.- Install the reviewed package with pacman, for example
sudo pacman -U ./package-file.pkg.tar.zst, and read any displayed install-script actions.
Replace angle-bracketed text with the actual repository address, directory, and package filename. The commands do not make an untrusted recipe safe; they simply separate downloading, inspection, building, and installation so you can make an informed decision at each stage.

What to look for in shell code
- Downloads piped directly into a shell interpreter, such as a network response executed without inspection.
- Commands that write outside the expected package directory, alter boot files, create users or services, or change authentication and startup configuration.
- Attempts to disable checksum or PGP verification, suppress errors, hide output, or decode opaque payloads.
- Unexpected network access during
build()orpackage()instead of downloading the declared source in a verifiable way. - Install scripts that remove files, modify system configuration, or enable a service without a clear upstream reason.
None of these patterns is automatically malicious in every project; some software legitimately needs service setup or generated downloads. The deciding factor is whether the behavior is documented, expected, and traceable to the upstream project.
Choosing pacman, an AUR helper, or neither
| Your situation | Safer choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| An equivalent package exists in an official repository. | Use pacman and the official package. | You receive Arch’s repository governance and default signature enforcement. |
| The software is only available through the AUR and you can review shell scripts. | Inspect manually, then build with makepkg; a helper may automate repeatable steps after review. | You retain visibility into the code that will execute. |
| You need frequent AUR updates but cannot review diffs. | Do not enable unattended AUR upgrades; either review each change or choose an official alternative. | A malicious update can arrive under a previously trusted package name. |
| The package is orphaned, recently adopted, or has unexplained changes. | Pause and find another source. | Ownership transitions increase uncertainty, and popularity is not proof of safety. |
| You need a package for a high-value or sensitive system. | Prefer an official repository package or build in an isolated environment with a documented review. | The cost of a compromised build is higher, so convenience should not override verification. |
An AUR helper is a workflow choice, not a trust upgrade. If it offers a review screen, always read the complete diff before accepting an update. If it cannot show the files or proceeds automatically, it is unsuitable for packages you have not independently audited.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
“It has thousands of votes, so it is safe.”
Votes and comments provide context about use and maintenance, but they are not a security review. Correct the mistake by reading the current PKGBUILD and checking recent changes before each meaningful update.
“The package built successfully, so it is trustworthy.”
A successful build proves only that the commands completed and produced a package. It does not prove that the commands were benign. Correct the mistake by inspecting first, preserving checksums and PGP checks, and reviewing the resulting file list.
“The helper checks everything for me.”
Helpers can display diffs and automate dependency handling, but they do not assume responsibility for the AUR’s user-submitted code. Correct the mistake by configuring the helper to show build-file changes and refusing updates you have not read.

“A valid signature means the software cannot be malicious.”
A signature authenticates the key that signed a package and protects the downloaded artifact from alteration. It does not establish benign intent or eliminate upstream vulnerabilities. Correct the mistake by considering both signature provenance and the software’s source and maintenance history.
“Official repositories are risk-free.”
Official repositories have a stronger, centrally governed path, but compromise of a maintainer, key, build system, mirror, or upstream project could still matter. Correct the mistake by keeping the system updated, reading security announcements, and treating unusual package behavior seriously.
Keeping the decision current after installation
A one-time review is not enough for software that receives updates. Before upgrading an AUR package, inspect the new PKGBUILD, .install files, patches, source URLs, checksums, and maintainer changes again. Pay special attention to ownership transfers, orphan adoption, newly added network commands, and changes that disable verification.
Continue following Arch security and AUR announcements. During the 2026-06-12 incident, Arch specifically directed AUR users to review PKGBUILD and install-script changes. An announcement can change the urgency of an otherwise routine update, so postpone upgrades that you cannot review while an active warning is in effect.
If a review reveals a suspicious change, do not run makepkg or install the update. Preserve the package files and relevant logs for analysis, disconnect the affected test environment if appropriate, and replace the software with a trusted official package or a clean, reviewed build. On a system where untrusted code may already have run, treat credentials and other sensitive data as potentially exposed and investigate before continuing normal use.
When an AUR package can move into the official repositories
A popular AUR project can later be adopted and maintained through Arch’s repository processes. Once it is accepted into an official repository, the package gains that repository’s maintainer governance and signing path. The earlier AUR history can help explain the project, but AUR hosting alone never confers official trust. Evaluate the package according to where you are obtaining it now, not where it might move in the future.
Bottom line: use the repository that matches your trust budget
Choose the official repository whenever an equivalent package is available: pacman’s default signature policy and Arch’s maintainer processes provide the clearest, least burdensome trust path. Use the AUR for software you genuinely need when no suitable official package exists, but treat every recipe as executable community code. Read the PKGBUILD and related files, verify sources and checksums, review changes on every update, and build in isolation when the package or system is sensitive. An AUR helper can save time; it cannot replace that judgment.
