ARC Raiders’ limited PvE matchmaking test began October 13, 2026, and at least one player has said the option could make them more willing to play PvP. That is an early prediction, not evidence that players are already using PvE to practice PvP—or that this is a widespread reason to choose it. The test instead gives players an alternative to encounters with other Raiders while Embark Studios gathers feedback and data.

What the PvE matchmaking test changes

From October 13 through October 20, 2026, players can select either the standard PvPvE experience or PvE matchmaking. The PvE option removes player-to-player damage, but it is not an empty or threat-free world: players still encounter other Raiders and ARC enemies. Embark describes the test as an alternative to PvP encounters, not a new PvE progression system or a way to make PvE more challenging. Embark’s test announcement explains the limited trial and its purpose.

Some rules and trade-offs distinguish the test from the usual PvPvE queue:

  • Other players cannot damage you. Stun and fire throwables also do not work on other players.
  • Physical interaction items, including barricades and ziplines, remain unaffected.
  • Overall loot value is reduced in PvE matchmaking.
  • Different squad sizes are more likely to meet because the matchmaking system does not prioritize separating them.
  • Night Raid, Locked Gate, Hidden Bunker, Frigate, and Redirection are among the map conditions without a PvE option.
  • Queue times may be affected in regions or at hours with fewer players.

Embark says PvE sessions do not affect a player’s PvPvE matchmaking rating. The test is limited; the developer has not committed to making PvE matchmaking permanent.

Is anyone using PvE to practice PvP?

The available evidence supports a narrower claim: at least one early commenter expected access to PvE to make them play PvP more. A safer environment might feel like a lower-pressure way to learn the game, but the test’s rules do not turn PvE into direct PvP practice. Since player-to-player damage is disabled, it cannot reproduce the risks, fights, or decision-making of encounters with hostile Raiders.

There is no credible count establishing how many players chose PvE specifically to prepare for PvP, and the test had only just begun when these early reactions appeared. So it is too soon to say that PvE is already being used for PvP practice as a general trend. Embark says it will review player feedback and test data, but no post-test findings are established here.

Why Embark is testing the option

Embark says it wants to offer an alternative to PvP encounters, collect feedback, and examine how the toggle affects both PvE and PvPvE sessions. In its September announcement, the studio said the intent was “not to test how we can make PvE more challenging or to try new PvE progression,” but to give players an alternative to PvP encounters. That stated purpose is different from claiming that players are using PvE to train for PvP.

Embark also published player-preference figures in 2026: 37% classified as friendly co-op players, 27% as mixed players, and 34% as pure PvP players; 51% of surveyed players expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. These are figures reported by the studio, not independent measurements. The cited announcement does not state the survey’s sample size or methodology, so the percentages should not be read as a precise census of the player base.

What a player should expect from each queue

Factor PvE matchmaking test Standard PvPvE
Risk from other Raiders Player-to-player damage is disabled; stun and fire throwables do not work on other players. Other Raiders can be a source of PvP encounters.
Loot Overall loot value is reduced. Standard loot value is not specified in the cited test details.
Squad sizes Different squad sizes meet more often because squad separation is not prioritized. Squad-separation behavior is not specified in the cited test details.
Map conditions Night Raid, Locked Gate, Hidden Bunker, Frigate, and Redirection are among the conditions without a PvE option. The cited test details do not list PvPvE map-condition restrictions.
Matchmaking rating Playing PvE does not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating, according to Embark. PvPvE rating remains separate from PvE sessions, according to Embark.

For the PvE test, choose the option if avoiding damage from other players matters more than the reduced loot value, less predictable squad-size matching, or the unavailable map conditions. Choose PvPvE if you want the possibility of Raider-versus-Raider combat; PvE cannot simulate those fights. In either case, Embark says your PvE sessions will not change your PvPvE matchmaking rating.

Could PvE and PvPvE become separate long-term experiences?

Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said in an October 9 interview that Embark had considered what opening the door to a PvE option would mean. Asked about a possible long-term split between PvE and PvPvE versions, he said “it’s very possible.” That describes a possibility, not a confirmed roadmap or a promise that the temporary test will become a permanent mode.
