ARC Raiders is an online-only extraction adventure built around a simple trade-off: explore a hostile surface for loot and objectives, then try to extract before machines or other Raiders cost you your gear. Its strongest draw is the tension created by dangerous ARC machines and unpredictable encounters with other players. Its biggest drawback is that failure can mean losing equipment and the loot you found. You can play solo or in a team of two or three, but solo does not mean offline.
What kind of game is ARC Raiders?
Embark Studios describes ARC Raiders as a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a future Earth threatened by mechanized enemies. Before a run, you prepare equipment in a workshop; on the surface, you scavenge and pursue objectives while facing ARC machines and other human Raiders. Extracting lets you bring resources back to trade, craft, repair, or upgrade equipment.
The result is a game where exploration and combat are tied to a consequential decision: whether to keep searching or leave with what you have. A run can be relatively quiet or turn into repeated fights, and other players may cooperate, attack, or change their intentions. That uncertainty is central to both the appeal and the frustration.

PvE threats give exploration real pressure
The ARC machines are more than scenery: they are a major danger alongside other Raiders. PC Gamer’s near-launch reviewer argued that the machine threat made exploration and combat engaging in their experience. That is a critical judgment rather than a guarantee that every player will find the encounters equally compelling.

The setting supports atmospheric exploration
Embark describes a world combining Italian history with space-travel infrastructure. PC Gamer also praised the visual variety of the ruined maps. If you enjoy exploring environments as much as fighting, that atmosphere is part of the game’s case.
You can go solo or bring a small team
PlayStation lists play as one Raider or in teams of two or three. That makes the game an option for a solo player or a small group, without requiring a full squad. However, all of these options are online multiplayer play, not an offline campaign.
Some systems soften the cost of a failed run
In its launch-day preview, Xbox Wire described free no-risk loadouts with a minimum kit, as well as skill-point progress for objectives even when a player fails to extract. Those cushions can make it easier to keep playing after a bad run, though they do not remove the risk attached to gear you choose to bring.

Player encounters can create unscripted moments
Xbox Wire’s preview described encounters that ranged from hostile fights to friendly conversations and assistance, with betrayal also possible. That social unpredictability can make raids memorable, but cooperation is never something to count on.

What are the main cons?
Gear loss makes failure matter
Xbox Wire notes that losing an encounter can cost the equipment you brought into the raid as well as the chance to return with collected loot. If losing a loadout would make you reluctant to take risks, the extraction loop may feel stressful rather than exciting.
Other Raiders are not dependable teammates
Some encounters may be friendly, but others can end in an ambush or betrayal. Players looking for predictable cooperative PvE should factor in that human opponents are part of the danger.

There is no offline solo campaign
PlayStation classifies ARC Raiders as online multiplayer-only. Being able to enter a raid alone does not make it playable as a standalone offline single-player game.
Player ratings vary by review window
Steam’s English-language user reviews showed an 81% positive all-time aggregate from 200,070 reviews and a 55% positive recent 30-day aggregate from 2,656 reviews on October 7, 2026. These are separate, time-sensitive storefront aggregates—not a representative survey—and should not be collapsed into one score or treated as an explanation of why opinions differ.

Does ARC Raiders fit the way you want to play?
Use these questions to decide whether its trade-offs suit you:
- Risk: Are you comfortable taking equipment into a run when a failed encounter can cost it?
- Combat: Do dangerous machine encounters appeal alongside uncertain PvP, rather than instead of it?
- Group size: Does solo online play or a team of two or three fit your plans?
- Connectivity: Are you comfortable with a game that requires online multiplayer rather than offering an offline solo campaign?
- Platform: Check the requirements for your chosen platform or service. The available sources do not establish a controlled current performance comparison among PC, PS5, and Xbox, so they do not support naming a best-performing platform.
What should you know about its current status?
Embark’s official site listed the Frozen Trail update and a free-play period for October 8–12, 2026. Those dates have passed as of October 11, 2026, and the listing alone does not establish whether the schedule changed or what availability looks like now. Check the official ARC Raiders site for current announcements. Steam review figures are also live and may have changed since October 7, 2026.
