Choose the Grappling Hook when you need to climb, descend, swing, or change direction around an anchor. Choose the Zipline when you can create a clean, deliberate connection between two useful points. In Frozen Trail 2.0, neither tool is universally better: the Hook is an adaptable personal-movement option, while the Zipline is a committed route you place in the environment. That recommendation is a practical reading of their documented mechanics, not an official ranking.
The short answer
The two items solve different movement problems. A Grappling Hook gives one player control around a hook point. You can pull yourself upward, lower yourself, swing around the anchor, and—according to an October 7, 2026 preview—redeploy it in midair to continue a swing. A Zipline creates a route between two locations. Once placed, it is most useful when the endpoints and path are already clear.
- Carry the Grappling Hook for vertical buildings, irregular rooftops, emergency descents, and routes where your direction may change.
- Carry the Zipline for a known gap between two surfaces, a planned crossing, or a straight route that you can inspect before committing.
- Do not treat Snap Hook numbers as Grappling Hook numbers. Frozen Trail 2.0 changed Snap Hook range, durability use, and power cost separately from the new Grappling Hook.
How the Grappling Hook works
It is a rope-and-anchor movement tool
PC Gamer staff writer Morgan Park described the Grappling Hook in a preview session as a simulated rope rather than a simple “press once and fly to the target” grapple. The hook point acts as a pivot. From that pivot, the player can climb, descend, or swing, making the item useful on buildings and between rooftops. Park also reported using it to interact with flying ARC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters when choosing what to carry. A target does not merely determine where you arrive; it determines the center of a movement arc. You can approach an anchor from below, move around it, or let your momentum carry you toward another surface. The same anchor can therefore support several lines of travel instead of one fixed route.

Midair redeployment adds flexibility
During the preview, Park reported redeploying the Grappling Hook while airborne and chaining swings without encountering a cooldown or use limit. This is preview reporting, not a promise that every map surface or live-build interaction behaves identically. It nevertheless explains why the Hook is the better fit for routes that cannot be reduced to one straight crossing.
Expect physics and geometry to matter
The Hook is versatile, but it is not frictionless. The preview reported rope tangles around protruding balconies and situations in which the player reached the top of a structure without automatically grabbing the ledge. A large ARC that appeared to be an intended non-climbable target also did not reliably accept the hook. Plan for trial and error when balconies, ledges, signs, or other protrusions sit between you and the anchor.
- Look for an anchor with a clear rope path, not merely a visible destination.
- Leave room for the rope to swing around the anchor without catching on nearby geometry.
- After reaching a roof edge, be ready to complete the climb manually if no ledge grab occurs.
- Treat large ARC as an uncertain attachment target unless the live game clearly confirms it.
How the Zipline works
It connects two endpoints
The current community-maintained Zipline item page describes it as a Rare utility that can be deployed between two locations and attached to most surfaces. The page lists a 60 m range. That figure is community item data, last modified October 8, 2026, so check the live client if the exact limit affects a planned route.
Unlike the Hook, a Zipline does not give you a family of paths around one anchor. You choose two useful points and commit to the connection you place. That makes it predictable when the gap is obvious, but less forgiving when the terrain, building edges, or sightline changes after deployment.
Placement can fail after the item is placed
Embark’s official Frozen Trail 2.0 notes warn that a placed Zipline breaks if it intersects something. A route that looks open from one endpoint can therefore fail because the cable clips a structure, overhang, or other obstruction along the line. Inspect the entire span before relying on it.
Crafting information is patch-sensitive
The community item page lists one Steel Cable plus one Mechanical Component at Utility Station 2 as the Zipline recipe. It is a useful planning reference, not a permanent contract: recipes and station requirements can change with a patch. Confirm the ingredients and station in the current game before committing a loadout around them.
Grappling Hook vs. Zipline at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Movement geometry | Movement around an anchor, including climbing, descending, and swinging. | A placed connection between two locations. |
| Best route shape | Vertical, curved, multi-stage, or changing-direction routes. | A clear, planned line between useful endpoints. |
| Flexibility | Preview reporting describes midair redeployment for chained swings. | Path is committed when the placed line is established. |
| Main reliability concern | Preview-reported rope tangles and inconsistent ledge grabs. | Official notes say the line breaks if it intersects something after placement. |

Choose by the route you actually need
Climbing a building or changing height
Use the Grappling Hook. Its anchor-and-rope model is designed for gaining height, lowering yourself from a roof, or moving between different elevations without first constructing a fixed line. It is also the safer conceptual choice when the destination is above you but the best landing point may change as you move.
Swinging between rooftops
Use the Grappling Hook when the crossing requires momentum or a curved path. A Zipline can work only if you can place a clean line between suitable surfaces; it does not reproduce the Hook’s pivot-and-swing movement.

Crossing a known, open gap
Use the Zipline when both endpoints are valuable and the span is unobstructed. Measure the route against the listed 60 m community range, then check the cable’s full path for intersections before placement.
Descending quickly from a high position
Use the Grappling Hook. The reported ability to descend from an anchor gives you a personal escape route without requiring a lower endpoint to be prepared first. Leave enough control margin to avoid snagging on balconies or other projections.
Making a route for a planned return
Use the Zipline if the connection remains clear and useful in both directions of your movement plan. Its strength is commitment: once the route is correctly placed, you know which two points it serves. Do not assume a line will survive if later geometry intersects it.
Moving through uncertain terrain
Favor the Grappling Hook. You can adapt the anchor and direction as the route reveals itself. The trade-off is execution: the rope may tangle, and a ledge may require a manual grab rather than an automatic one.
Route examples that make the choice clearer
Imagine a tall apartment block with balconies on several sides. You may need to gain two floors, swing around a corner, and land on whichever roof edge is open. That is a Grappling Hook problem: the anchor is a pivot and the route can change as you climb. A Zipline would require two suitable endpoints and a cable that avoids every projecting balcony.
Now consider two visible rooftops separated by an open street. If the distance is within the community-listed 60 m limit and no beam, sign, roofline, or overhang crosses the cable’s path, a Zipline is the more deliberate choice. You are solving a known connection rather than improvising movement.
For an emergency exit from a high roof, the Hook offers the more direct concept because you can descend from an anchor without first establishing a lower endpoint. For a return route that you have already inspected, the Zipline’s fixed connection can be easier to reason about. Neither example proves a universal combat or speed advantage; they simply match each tool to its geometry.

- Identify the movement objective. Decide whether you need to climb, descend, swing, or reposition around a structure. If the route is simply point A to point B, check whether a Zipline would be cleaner.
- Select a defensible anchor. Prefer a surface with a clear line to the player and enough space around it for the rope to move. Avoid anchors hidden behind balconies, signs, or projecting floors.
- Fire and read the rope. Confirm that the hook has attached before committing your movement. If the rope catches on geometry, release or reposition rather than forcing the swing.
- Control the approach to the destination. Climb or descend as needed, and use the anchor as a pivot for a swing instead of aiming only at the final roof.
- Finish the landing manually. The preview reported reaching a top without grabbing the ledge, so keep a movement input ready for the final pull-up or landing.
- Chain only when the next anchor is clear. Midair redeployment was reported in the preview, but each additional hook still depends on valid geometry and a reliable attachment.
Placing a Zipline: a practical procedure
- Choose both endpoints first. Identify the surface where the line starts and the surface where it should finish. A useful endpoint is more important than a merely reachable one.
- Check the span, not just the endpoints. Trace the full line for balconies, roofs, beams, terrain, or other objects that could intersect it. Frozen Trail 2.0 specifically warns that an intersecting placed Zipline breaks.
- Confirm the distance. The community item page lists a 60 m range. Treat that as a current reference value and verify it in the client if the crossing is close to the limit.
- Place only after the route is clear. Once deployed, the Zipline represents a committed connection. Recheck that it leads to a surface you can actually use rather than an edge that leaves you exposed or stranded.
- Use the route for its intended crossing. Do not expect the Zipline to provide the Hook’s ability to change direction, orbit an anchor, or improvise a descent.
Access, crafting, and the Frozen Trail 2.0 changes
Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 update, posted October 8, 2026, added the Grappling Hook to the ARC Raiders item roster. The official Steam update post dated the same day also lists it as a new item. PC Gamer’s October 8 Nomadic Crafting guide lists both Grappling Hook and Zipline among items unlocked through Nomadic Crafting.

The exact Grappling Hook ingredients, carry cost, durability, cooldown, and travel speed are not established by the cited current materials. The same caution applies to Zipline team reuse, sound, visibility, and combat exposure. Do not substitute Snap Hook values for any of them.
Why Snap Hook comparisons cause confusion
Frozen Trail 2.0 discusses personal-mobility identity separately from the Grappling Hook and Zipline. Embark’s ARC Raiders Team wrote: “As we added more personal mobility items, it became clear we needed to begin differentiating them to a greater degree.” The notes then describe Snap Hook as a burst-mobility tool that closes distance or traverses a location with more commitment.
The following are official Snap Hook changes in Frozen Trail 2.0; they are not Grappling Hook specifications:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Snap Hook attribute | Previous value | Frozen Trail 2.0 value |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 20 m | 18 m |
| Durability consumed per use | 2% | 4% |
| Power cost | 50 | 60 |
These figures can help you identify which item a patch note is discussing, but they cannot answer the Grappling Hook-versus-Zipline decision. The new Hook’s reported rope behavior and the Zipline’s placed-route behavior are the relevant distinctions here.
What you should not assume about either tool
Current material does not establish a reliable head-to-head value for travel time, noise, visibility, team reuse, survivability, or combat exposure. No named population statistic, win rate, or controlled effectiveness study establishes that one item is generally superior. Treat claims about a guaranteed speed advantage, silent movement, automatic team access, or safer fights as unverified unless a current in-game test or authoritative update documents them.
Recipes, item stats, and collision behavior are also patch-sensitive. The community Zipline recipe and 60 m range are useful planning references, while official Frozen Trail 2.0 notes provide the authoritative intersection warning and Snap Hook changes. Recheck the live client after balance updates.
A simple carry decision
- Pick Grappling Hook: your route includes a climb, descent, swing, rooftop chain, or a likely change of direction.
- Pick Zipline: you can name two endpoints, inspect a clear span between them, and benefit from a committed connection.
- Reconsider the plan: the Hook’s likely anchor is surrounded by snagging geometry, or the Zipline’s cable would cross an overhang or other obstruction.
- Verify before relying on numbers: use the current client for recipes, range, durability, cooldown, and other values that are not documented here.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better to carry, the Grappling Hook or Zipline?
Neither is universally better. Carry the Grappling Hook for personal climbing, swinging, descent, or changing direction. Carry the Zipline when you can identify two useful endpoints and a clear line between them.
Is the Grappling Hook the same as the Snap Hook?
No. Frozen Trail 2.0 added the Grappling Hook and separately changed the Snap Hook. Snap Hook received an 18 m range, 4% durability consumption per use, and a 60 power cost; those figures must not be applied to the Grappling Hook.

Does the Grappling Hook have unlimited uses or no cooldown?
In Morgan Park’s October 7 preview, the Hook could be redeployed in midair without an observed cooldown or use limit. That is a preview observation, not a guaranteed live-build specification. Confirm the current client’s behavior.
How far can a Zipline reach?
The community-maintained item page lists a 60 m range. Because that value is not an official balance note and can change, verify it in-game when a route approaches the limit.
Why did my placed Zipline break?
Embark’s October 8 Frozen Trail 2.0 notes say a placed Zipline breaks when it intersects something. Check the entire cable path for buildings, balconies, beams, terrain, and other obstructions, not just the two endpoints.

Can the Grappling Hook attach to ARC?
The preview described interaction with flying ARC, but a large ARC that appeared intended to be non-climbable did not reliably accept the hook. Treat unusual or large targets as uncertain until the live game confirms attachment.
Which tool is better in a fight?
No reliable current comparison establishes a universal advantage in speed, noise, visibility, survivability, team reuse, or exposure. Choose based on the movement geometry you need, not on an assumed combat statistic.
Bottom line
The Grappling Hook is the flexible choice for movement around an anchor: climbing, descending, swinging, and adapting your direction. The Zipline is the planning choice for a clean connection between two endpoints, provided its full span is free of intersections. Frozen Trail 2.0 gives each item a distinct role; your best carry decision follows the route in front of you, not a universal ranking.
