The Grappling Hook is a rope-based traversal gadget added to ARC Raiders in the Frozen Trail 2.0 update on October 8, 2026. It is not the Snap Hook: the Grappling Hook lets you work around an anchored rope to climb, swing, or descend, while the Snap Hook is designed for a quick burst of movement. The reviewed official notes do not give the Grappling Hook a numeric range or list its default buttons. Check your current in-game bindings rather than relying on an unverified key or the Snap Hook’s 18 m range.
What the Grappling Hook does
Embark Studios introduced the Grappling Hook in the October 8, 2026 Frozen Trail 2.0 update. Its intended traversal uses include reaching difficult places, descending buildings, and swinging across gaps. A PC Gamer hands-on report by Morgan Park, published October 7 after a preview session, describes it as a simulated rope rather than a gadget that simply pulls the player in a straight line to an aimed point.
That distinction changes how to think about movement with it. The hook creates an anchor and a rope; the anchor can act as a pivot. In the preview, Park was able to climb toward the anchor, descend away from it, or swing against the rope. The item is therefore useful for changing elevation and moving around obstacles, not just for crossing a horizontal gap. A line that catches a surface does not necessarily place you neatly on top of that surface.

Park also reported being able to redeploy the hook while airborne, without a cooldown or use limit in that preview build. That is a hands-on observation, not a published guarantee about every live version. Game mechanics can change in updates, so treat exact behavior beyond the official traversal description as version-sensitive.

Grappling Hook controls: where to find your buttons
The reviewed sources do not verify the default PC keys or gamepad buttons for firing, reeling, or detaching the Grappling Hook. Embark’s Frozen Trail notes mention an updated default gamepad mapping, but do not enumerate the Grappling Hook inputs. The preview report describes how the rope behaves without naming specific controls. Guessing a key based on another gadget, platform, or player’s remapping could send you to the wrong control.
- Open the in-game controls or settings menu. Use the current menu on your platform; exact menu labels and locations may differ between PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
- Check the bindings for the Grappling Hook or its gadget actions. Look for the input that activates or fires the equipped item and any separate actions for changing rope movement or detaching. The reviewed sources do not establish which actions have separate bindings.
- Account for custom mappings. If you changed controls, check the active binding rather than assuming a factory default. On a controller, check the mapping for the profile currently in use.
- Test the controls somewhere you can recover from a miss. Confirm what each input does before relying on it to cross a gap or escape danger. The exact safest practice area is not specified in the reviewed sources.
The game’s official site lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Platform availability does not make a particular key or button universal: the active control profile and any remapping matter. The reliable answer to “what button is Grapple?” is the binding shown in your game, not an unverified list copied from another setup.
Grappling Hook range: is it 18 meters?
No verified numeric range for the Grappling Hook appears in the reviewed official update notes. Do not use 18 m as its range. That number belongs to the Snap Hook: Frozen Trail 2.0 reduced the Snap Hook’s range from 20 m to 18 m.
The same official patch changed other Snap Hook values: durability consumption increased from 2% to 4% per use, and power cost increased from 50 to 60. Those are Snap Hook figures too. They do not establish the Grappling Hook’s reach, durability use, or power cost. The available evidence does not give a Grappling Hook distance that can safely be turned into a meter-based aiming rule.

In practice, judge a potential Grappling Hook shot by whether the intended surface appears reachable and whether the resulting rope path and landing area are useful. That is a practical approach, not a substitute for a published range value or a guarantee that a particular surface will accept the hook. Embark’s official patch notes are the strongest source for the Snap Hook change; the preview coverage does not supply a numeric Grappling Hook range.
Grappling Hook vs. Snap Hook
These are distinct items with different movement roles, not two names for the same gadget. Embark said the new Grappling Hook gave the items separate identities rather than a “linear upgrade” path. The official update frames the Snap Hook as burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing a location. The Grappling Hook’s stated traversal roles are reaching hard-to-reach places, descending buildings, and swinging over gaps.
| Feature | Grappling Hook | Snap Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Movement style | Rope-based movement around an anchor; hands-on preview described climbing, swinging, and descending. | Burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing a location, according to Embark. |
| Verified range | Numeric range not stated in the reviewed official notes. | 18 m after the October 8, 2026 Frozen Trail 2.0 change; the previous figure was 20 m. |
| Other verified patch values | Not stated in the reviewed official notes. | Durability consumption changed from 2% to 4% per use, and power cost from 50 to 60, in Frozen Trail 2.0. |
| Best-supported distinction | Use its rope-and-anchor behavior for traversal that involves height, a swing, or a descent. | Think of it as the quick-movement gadget, rather than assuming its statistics describe the Grappling Hook. |
The table’s Snap Hook numbers are the values Embark published for its October 8 update, not Grappling Hook specifications. If you are checking an item’s current behavior after a later patch, use the current in-game description and current official notes.
How to approach a grapple without assuming it will land you safely
The following approach follows from the reported rope behavior and failure cases; it is cautious practical guidance, not an official attachment guide or a tested sequence guaranteed to work in every situation.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
- Choose an anchor and a destination separately. Decide where you want the rope to catch, then consider where your character will end up as the rope moves. A reachable anchor is not automatically a ledge you can stand on.
- Look at the rope’s likely path. A balcony or other protrusion between you and the anchor may interfere with the line. If the path appears likely to wrap around an obstacle, adjust your position or aim before committing.
- Plan for a ledge transition. Climbing the rope toward a roof edge may leave you hanging or climbing without grabbing the ledge. Allow room to change your approach rather than assuming that reaching the top of the rope completes a mantle.
- Leave yourself a fallback. When a missed grab or awkward swing would be dangerous, prefer a route where a failed attempt does not immediately mean a fall into a hazard or exposure to enemies.
- Reassess moving targets and surfaces. The preview report found that the player could slide off the large Emperor ARC. Do not assume that every large or moving ARC surface will hold the rope or the player reliably.
Common mistakes and what to try instead
Expecting the rope to pull you straight to the aim point
The Grappling Hook is described as a simulated rope with an anchor, not simply as a straight-line zip to a selected point. Aiming at a destination and expecting to arrive there automatically can produce an awkward swing or leave you short. Think about the anchor’s position and the movement the rope will allow, then choose a destination you can actually reach from that motion.
Climbing to a ledge and assuming the character will grab it
Park reported a preview failure in which the player climbed the rope without grabbing the ledge at the top. Treat reaching ledge height and completing a ledge grab as separate events. If the landing matters, aim for a usable surface and be prepared to adjust rather than relying on an automatic mantle.
Ignoring balconies or other protrusions
A rope can tangle around a protruding balcony, according to the hands-on report. Aiming through or close to projecting architecture can change the line’s path. Check for obstacles between you and the anchor; if one is in the way, reposition or select a clearer line instead of assuming the rope will pass cleanly.

Grappling to an ARC as if every surface were stable
The preview account reports sliding off the large Emperor ARC. That example is not an official compatibility list, and it does not prove that every ARC surface fails. It does show why size alone is not a reliable sign that a target will hold you. Avoid staking a critical escape on a moving enemy surface unless you have reason to trust that attachment in the current game version.

Using the Snap Hook’s number as the Grappling Hook’s specification
The official 18 m figure is easy to misread because both items are hooks. It applies to the Snap Hook after the Frozen Trail 2.0 patch, not the Grappling Hook. Keep the names and numbers paired whenever you compare the gadgets.
Following a control guide for a different platform or binding
Control instructions can become wrong when a player uses a different platform, an updated mapping, or custom controls. Because the reviewed sources do not confirm the Grappling Hook’s exact inputs, verify your current in-game binding before using it in a high-risk move.

What is verified, and what remains unknown
The official Frozen Trail 2.0 notes establish that the Grappling Hook was added on October 8, 2026 and clarify the separate role of the Snap Hook. Embark’s official Steam community post describes the Grappling Hook’s intended traversal uses. The October 7 PC Gamer preview supplies hands-on observations of rope behavior and several failure cases, but those observations came from a preview session. The October 9 Beebom guide supplies acquisition and crafting details from a secondary source.
- Established: the Grappling Hook is distinct from the Snap Hook, and its intended uses include reaching difficult places, descending buildings, and swinging across gaps.
- Observed in a preview: climbing, swinging, descending, midair redeployment, missed ledge grabs, a rope tangling around a balcony, and sliding off the Emperor ARC.
- Not verified in the reviewed sources: the Grappling Hook’s numeric range, default PC or controller button names, and a complete list of surfaces that accept or hold it.
- Reported by a secondary guide: the listed acquisition routes, blueprint unlocks, and crafting recipe.
That separation matters: a preview observation is useful for anticipating how a rope may behave, but it is not the same as a permanent specification. Likewise, the Snap Hook’s official numbers are precise but apply only to that item.
