The Grappling Hook can help you climb toward an anchor, descend from it, or swing against it—but no reviewed source confirms that it cancels fall damage or makes any particular drop safe. Treat it as a way to influence your movement, not as a guaranteed emergency brake. Choose your anchor and route before committing to a descent, leave room to react, and practice on forgiving drops before you rely on the tool near a dangerous fall.

What the Grappling Hook does—and what is not confirmed

Embark Studios added the Grappling Hook and the Pendola Pass map in its Frozen Trail 2.0 update, announced October 8, 2026. A PC Gamer hands-on report published October 7 describes the hook as a simulated rope: once attached, the line can be used to climb toward the attachment point, descend from it, or swing against it. Those are useful movement options, but they do not establish a specific safe-fall technique.

The same PC Gamer preview report says the hook could be redeployed in midair without a cooldown or use limit in the version the reporter played. That is an observation from a preview session, not official technical documentation or a guarantee about every live-game version and situation. The official ARC Raiders site describes the game’s mechanics broadly, but the reviewed material does not give a Grappling Hook procedure for avoiding fall damage.

Most importantly, the reviewed sources do not specify a fall-damage threshold, an activation timing window, or a sequence that guarantees safety. They do not establish that attaching to a particular surface, descending on the line, swinging, or reattaching prevents damage on landing. Keep that distinction in mind: the hook may help you shape a route, but whether it reduces or prevents damage in a specific situation is not established here.

Plan around the anchor point

Think about the attachment point before you fire. The line’s reported movement options depend on where it attaches, so the point is the start of your route rather than a safety guarantee. Look for a visible point that appears to support the direction you want to travel, and consider where you will end up if the movement does not work as hoped.

For climbing toward a point

If your goal is to gain height or reach an elevated position, aim for a point that supports movement toward it. Before committing, check whether the route toward that point looks clear and whether arriving there leaves you with a usable next move. The hands-on report supports climbing toward an attachment; it does not identify which surfaces are compatible or promise that every apparent anchor will work. Avoid assuming a point is valid solely because it looks reachable.

For descending

For a descent, consider both the line and the space below it. A point that lets you move downward may help you control your route, but it does not by itself prove that the landing is safe. If you cannot see enough of the landing area to judge what follows, delay the drop or find a route with more room to assess it. Keep an alternative path in mind rather than treating the rope as a substitute for checking the ground.

For swinging

A swing can change your direction relative to the anchor, according to the preview account. Choose a point with the intended movement in mind, and leave room for the result to differ from your expectation. Do not count on a swing to stop you at a particular place or to remove damage from a fall; neither outcome is established by the reviewed reporting.

Use the hook to shape vertical movement, not to assume a safe landing

Climbing toward, descending from, and swinging against an attachment are distinct ways to use the same line. Decide which one you need before you act: are you trying to reach a higher point, make a controlled route downward, or move across space? This small planning step can keep a traversal attempt from turning into a last-second guess about what the line will do.

When moving downward, pay attention to what you can still see and what space you have to respond. If you have time and clearance, use the line to adjust your route rather than rushing toward the ground. If your view or room to maneuver is disappearing, do not assume a late input will rescue the attempt. The available sources do not say how much distance or time remains for a recovery, so there is no supported cutoff that can be recommended.

  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout

When moving across or upward, think through what happens after the immediate movement. A successful attachment is only one part of traversal: the next landing area, route, or position matters too. Because the sources do not document compatible surfaces, exact controls, or specific route outcomes, make decisions from what the current game actually shows you rather than treating any particular anchor or maneuver as a proven formula.

Keep a recovery option—but leave room to use it

PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 preview report describes midair redeployment without a cooldown or use limit in the session covered. That observation suggests the hook may offer another attempt while airborne in that preview build. It does not establish a reliable last-second save, and it does not say how much clearance or reaction time a player needs.

Use the possibility of redeployment as a reason to preserve options, not as permission to make a reckless drop. Keep enough space and time to notice what is happening and respond. If you are already close to the ground, have little room to adjust, or cannot tell whether another attachment is possible, do not count on redeployment to prevent damage. The report supplies no timing window or guaranteed recovery procedure.

In practical terms, make your first attempt from a place where a failed connection or an imperfect movement is not automatically catastrophic. Pay attention to whether the hook attaches, how your character moves relative to the point, and what you can still do as you descend. Treat those observations as learning about your current in-game situation, not as proof that the same maneuver will be safe from a higher or more hazardous fall.

Practice the timing before you need it

Because no source establishes a universal recovery window, practice where a mistake is tolerable rather than experimenting beside a potentially lethal drop. Start with a forgiving descent and focus on understanding the sequence: identify an intended point, try the movement, watch how your character responds, and note whether you have room for another action. Change one variable at a time, such as the direction of travel or how early you try to adjust, so you can tell what affected the result.

  1. Choose a low-consequence place to learn. Use a drop where an imperfect attempt will not put you immediately in a situation you cannot recover from. This is a cautious practice recommendation, not a claim about a specific safe location or damage threshold.
  2. Check the point and route before using the hook. Identify where you want to go and what you want the line to do—climb, descend, or swing. Do not assume every visible surface can serve as an anchor.
  3. Pay attention during the movement. Notice whether the line attaches and how your position changes. Avoid trying to learn the result only at the last moment before landing.
  4. Try adjustments while you still have room. If you want to explore midair redeployment, test it with clearance to react. The preview report does not specify the amount of time required or guarantee success.
  5. Repeat before trusting the maneuver. A single successful traversal does not establish a guaranteed fall-damage rule. If the game behaves differently after an update, reassess rather than relying on a remembered timing.

Stop increasing the risk if you cannot reliably recognize what the hook is doing or if the practice area leaves no margin for error. The goal is to learn the current movement behavior, not to prove that an unverified technique will work from a lethal height.

Check your current controls instead of guessing

The Frozen Trail 2.0 update notes mention updated default gamepad mapping, but the reviewed notes do not provide a Grappling Hook button sequence. A control instruction copied from another platform, a different mapping, or an older version may not match your setup. Check the current in-game settings and bindings for the device and configuration you are using before attempting a time-sensitive maneuver.

If an input does not produce the expected action, first confirm the binding in your settings rather than repeatedly pressing an assumed button during a fall. The available official update information does not identify a universal control path or key for the hook, so an exact button cannot be responsibly specified here. Use the game’s current labels and your configured controls.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the line as a fall-damage shield. The reporting supports traversal uses, not a verified damage-cancellation mechanic.
  • Waiting until impact to experiment. No reviewed source gives a last safe moment to activate or redeploy the hook. Learn its behavior before approaching a high-risk drop.
  • Assuming an anchor will work because it looks plausible. The sources do not list compatible surfaces. Confirm attachment behavior where failure has limited consequences.
  • Using redeployment as a guaranteed second chance. The no-cooldown, no-use-limit behavior comes from a preview-session report, and it does not establish a reliable recovery window in every situation.
  • Relying on guessed button prompts. Updated default gamepad mapping is noted in the official update, but the reviewed source does not spell out the hook’s controls. Check your own current bindings.

How to approach the Grappling Hook on Pendola Pass

Pendola Pass arrived in the same Frozen Trail 2.0 update as the Grappling Hook, so the two are part of the same update context. That does not mean the available sources identify a route on the map, a preferred anchor, or a special way to avoid damage there. No specific Pendola Pass traversal route is established in the reviewed material.

On any map, apply the same decision sequence: choose a visible point that fits your intended movement, check the space along the route and below it, and keep a fallback in mind. Treat unfamiliar terrain as a place to observe what the current game allows, not as a reason to assume that the hook will attach or that a descent will be harmless. If a route requires a maneuver you have not tested, take a less exposed path when practical.

Bottom line on traversal and fall damage

The Grappling Hook is a flexible traversal tool: a recent hands-on report describes climbing toward, descending from, and swinging against an attachment point, and reports midair redeployment without cooldown or use limit in the preview it covered. Use those behaviors to plan movement and preserve room to react. But there is no confirmed fall-damage threshold, timing window, or guaranteed hook maneuver in the reviewed sources. Until the live game’s behavior is verified for your situation, do not rely on the hook alone to make a dangerous fall safe.
