ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure: you leave underground Speranza, search the surface for materials and objectives, then try to reach an extraction point and return with what you found. A successful extraction converts a risky topside trip into usable loot. Failing a run can cost the equipment you brought, but the game gives you a free-loadout and Scrappy-assisted way to start again.

Your long-term progress is broader than the contents of one backpack. Raider levels and skills, Workshop crafting, Trader quests, Cred, Raider Deck rewards and Codex discoveries develop your account over multiple runs. At level 20, you may also choose an Expedition, an optional reset that trades selected progression for Expedition rewards and bonuses.

What ARC Raiders is and how a run works

The official website describes ARC Raiders as a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a lethal future Earth threatened by mechanized ARC machines. Most of the game’s meaningful decisions happen in the contrast between Speranza, the underground home base, and the exposed surface known as topside.

Start in Speranza

Before deploying, you decide what equipment to take and what you are willing to risk. Speranza is where you prepare for a run and where successful extractions bring their haul. The game’s Workshop supports crafting, repairing and upgrading gear, so materials gathered in earlier trips can improve later ones.

Search topside

On the surface, you scavenge resources, pursue objectives and complete activities that award experience or other progression. Loot can be kept for crafting or sold for coin. The longer you remain, the more opportunities you have to find valuable materials and finish additional objectives.

Reach extraction and return

The immediate objective is not simply collecting items; it is surviving long enough to leave through an extraction point. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a universal operating rule for every extraction point, timing condition or special exception. Follow the current prompt and map information in your match rather than assuming all points behave identically.

Play alone or with a squad

The official FAQ supports solo play and teams of up to three. Matchmaking is described as prioritizing solo-versus-solo and team-versus-team encounters. That is a matchmaking preference, not a promise that every encounter will be perfectly mirrored.

The central decision: keep scavenging or extract now?

Every run asks the same risk-and-reward question: is another trip through the area worth the exposure it creates? Extra time can produce a better haul, more completed objectives and more experience. It also gives ARC machines and rival Raiders additional chances to find you.

Celia Lewis, a narrative designer at Embark Studios, summarized the launch-era design in Xbox Wire on September 22, 2025: “Scavenging for long periods can reap awesome rewards, but the longer a group stays topside, the more likely they will not only come across Arc, but other Raiders as well.” This explains the intended pressure, but it is not a guaranteed probability or a rule that every current match follows.

Choice Potential benefit What increases Practical signal
Stay topside More scavenged materials, additional objectives and more time to build a valuable haul Exposure to ARC machines and other Raiders; the equipment already carried is at risk if the run fails Continue when supplies, health and positioning support another objective and the expected value is worth the danger
Extract now Converts the current haul into resources you can use in Speranza Opportunity cost: you give up possible discoveries or objectives that were still available Leave when the backpack contains something important, your objective is complete, or the route is becoming unsafe

There is no source-backed numerical threshold that tells you when extraction becomes “safe.” Treat the decision as a judgment about the value of your current haul, your remaining supplies and the threats around you.

What happens when you fail to extract?

The official FAQ frames the goal as surviving with loot and directly addresses players who fail to extract and lose all their equipment. The supported baseline is straightforward: a failed run can cost the equipment you brought into it.

That statement should not be expanded into rules the cited FAQ does not document. The available material does not provide a complete item-by-item inventory policy, a universal rule for protected items, every downed-state interaction, teammate recovery behavior or the operation of every extraction point. Check current in-game text or an official patch note before relying on a particular exception.

How to restart after a loss

Losing a loadout does not leave your account permanently unusable. The FAQ identifies two recovery routes in Speranza:

  • Use the free loadout. It provides a no-cost way to enter another run after your equipment is gone.
  • Use Scrappy. Scrappy is an item-collecting companion that can help you gather enough resources to get moving again.

These options are a restart path, not a mechanism that preserves the equipment lost in the failed run. Plan your next deployment around what you can afford to risk rather than treating recovery as insurance.

How progression is divided across several systems

ARC Raiders does not put all advancement on one level bar. Each system answers a different question: what your Raider can do, what you can build, what objectives you can pursue and what information you have uncovered.

Raider level and skills

Topside activity awards experience points. XP raises your Raider level, and the official FAQ says each level awards skill points. You spend those points on abilities in playstyle areas that include mobility, stealth and carry capacity.

This creates a direct link between repeated runs and how your character handles risk. Mobility can affect how you move through danger, stealth can support a quieter approach, and carry capacity can increase the amount you can bring back. The sources do not establish exact values for individual skills, so evaluate the current skill descriptions in your game rather than relying on a fixed build guide.

Gear, materials and the Workshop

Scavenged materials have two broad uses. You can sell loot for coin, or use it in the Workshop to craft equipment. The player-facing game description also identifies repairing and upgrading gear as Workshop activities.

That makes the contents of a run strategically important even when a particular item is not an upgrade you can equip immediately. Before selling a rare-looking material, check whether a current recipe, repair requirement or planned upgrade needs it. Conversely, selling surplus loot can fund the next deployment when your immediate bottleneck is equipment rather than crafting stock.

Trader quests, challenges and Cred

Trader quests provide another progression track alongside ordinary scavenging. Small topside challenges award Cred. Cred unlocks rewards on the Raider Deck, so completing short challenges can advance a reward path even when a run does not produce a major gear upgrade.

Quests and challenges also change how you value a route. A location or activity that is not the richest source of materials may still be worthwhile if it advances a Trader objective or a Raider Deck reward. Keep the active objective visible before you choose whether to stay for another task.

Codex discoveries

Exploration unlocks Codex entries covering ARC, Last Belt locations and people you encounter. Codex progress is an information and discovery record rather than a replacement for gear progression. If you enjoy learning the setting, investigate unfamiliar areas even when the immediate material return is modest.

Expeditions: the optional reset at level 20

The Expedition Project is not an automatic wipe that happens to every player. According to the official FAQ, it unlocks at Raider level 20 and lets you choose when to reset. The choice is consequential because several forms of progression are removed while specific account progress remains.

How to decide whether to depart

Choose an Expedition when the reset-listed progress has delivered most of the value you want and the new rewards or bonuses justify rebuilding. Departing earlier sacrifices level, skills, XP, stored items and crafting progress sooner. Waiting lets you continue using that progress, but delays any Expedition benefits.

The FAQ describes an eight-week Expedition cycle. That is general system information, not a guarantee that every cycle will follow the same calendar or rewards. Read the current Expedition screen before confirming, especially if a live announcement has changed the schedule.

What the Fifth Expedition announcement changes

A dated announcement for the Fifth Expedition provides current-cycle context. It describes the fifth Expedition window, an opt-in change related to quest resets, Expedition rewards and buffs, and a pause after the fifth Expedition until early 2027 while Embark works on major improvements. It also says earned consecutive buffs persist during that pause.

Those details are time-sensitive news, not permanent rules for all future Expeditions. If you are deciding whether to reset during or after that window, use the live announcement and the in-game Expedition panel to confirm the current availability and terms.

Current mode and version notes

The official ARC Raiders homepage lists a PvE Toggle Beta Test running October 13–20, 2026. The existence and dates of that test are established, but the available information does not specify its exact loot changes, matchmaking behavior or whether the mode will remain after the test. Do not assume a beta toggle changes the normal extraction economy unless the current game client says so.

More broadly, extraction rules, skill values, rewards and schedules can change in patches. Use the current interface for operational details and treat dated announcements as snapshots of that period.

A practical plan for your first runs

  1. Enter with a purpose. Pick one or two realistic goals: a Trader quest, a material needed in the Workshop, a Codex discovery or a small challenge.
  2. Risk equipment deliberately. Take what supports the goal, but remember that a failed extraction can cost the equipment brought into the run.
  3. Watch the value of the haul. Once you have an important material or have completed the main objective, reassess whether another detour is worth the additional exposure.
  4. Account for both threats. ARC machines are a shared environmental danger, while other Raiders may cooperate or compete for resources. Avoid assuming that a quiet area is permanently safe.
  5. Extract before the run becomes a recovery problem. The game does not provide a source-backed risk percentage or universal safe-time limit. Make the call from your supplies, route and nearby activity.
  6. Use Speranza efficiently afterward. Decide whether materials should be sold or reserved for crafting, repairing or upgrading; review Trader quests, challenges and Raider Deck rewards; then spend newly earned skill points.
  7. Recover pragmatically after a loss. Use the free loadout or Scrappy rather than waiting until you can recreate the exact equipment that was lost.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing a full backpack with a successful run. Loot only becomes useful to your broader progression after you return it to Speranza.
  • Assuming every loss rule has an exception. The documented baseline is equipment loss on a failed extraction; undocumented protections should be verified in the current client.
  • Treating an Expedition as a routine level-up. It is an opt-in reset with a defined list of losses and carryovers. Read both columns before confirming.
  • Ignoring non-gear progression. Cred, Raider Deck rewards, Codex entries and Trader objectives can advance even when a run is not focused on a weapon or armor upgrade.
  • Using old schedule information. The Fifth Expedition pause and the October 2026 PvE toggle are dated live-service details. Check current announcements for changes.

The short version

ARC Raiders rewards a disciplined extraction decision: stay topside long enough to make the trip worthwhile, but leave before the extra value is outweighed by ARC or Raider exposure. A failed run can remove the equipment you carried, with a free loadout and Scrappy available to restart. Your durable advancement comes from several tracks—level and skills, Workshop gear, Trader quests, Cred and Raider Deck rewards, and Codex discoveries. At level 20, an Expedition is an optional reset, not a forced wipe; it removes the progress listed by the FAQ while preserving cosmetics, purchases, currencies, Raider Deck progress, discoveries, maps and prior Expedition bonuses.
