ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure: you deploy, search for useful loot, survive ARC machines and other Raiders, and leave through an extraction point. The beginner rules are straightforward but easy to misunderstand: matchmaking reacts to your behavior over multiple rounds, one kill does not instantly move you into a high-pressure lobby, unsecured loot is at risk when you die, and a successful run usually comes from leaving early rather than squeezing every container dry.

This FAQ explains how the matchmaking signal works, what to protect in your Safe Pocket, how to plan an extraction, and what the temporary PvE matchmaking test means for players starting during its announced October 13–20, 2026 window.

What kind of game is ARC Raiders?

Each raid asks you to balance four competing priorities: objective progress, salvage, survival resources, and the risk of losing what you carry. You enter a map, investigate points of interest, gather materials or quest items, deal with ARC machines and possible Raider encounters, then extract. Extraction—not simply finding an item—is what turns a risky trip into a successful one.

That distinction matters for beginners. A backpack full of materials is still exposed if the raid ends in death before you leave. Conversely, a short run that secures one important quest item and extracts safely can be more valuable than a long run that adds cheap scrap but ends with a lost pack.

How does matchmaking work?

Embark describes the system as an attempt to match players with “a similar likelihood of succeeding in the round.” It uses a continuous playstyle signal rather than two fixed categories such as “friendly” and “aggressive.” Players whose recent behavior is similar are more likely to meet, but similarity is never a guarantee.

Your recent Raider-to-Raider behavior matters most

One of the strongest inputs is how you behave toward other Raiders across previous rounds. Repeatedly choosing to shoot, pursue, or avoid players can gradually influence the type of opponents you are likely to encounter. The change is progressive: the system does not flip your profile after one isolated incident.

What does not instantly change your matchmaking profile?

  • One shot or one kill: A single encounter does not immediately reclassify you or place you in a permanently more aggressive lobby.
  • Loadout price: Bringing expensive equipment does not determine the matchmaking profile described in the official notes.
  • The end-of-round survey: Your survey response is not listed as a driver of the Raider-to-Raider behavior signal.
  • Looting a downed player: Taking items from a knocked-out Raider does not itself change the profile.

These exclusions do not make a raid safe. They only explain what the matchmaking profile is not measuring according to the published description.

Does one kill put you in sweaty or PvP lobbies?

No. A single kill is not an instant switch. Your future matchmaking is influenced gradually by a pattern of behavior over multiple rounds. You can still meet highly capable or aggressive players in any round because the system offers a likelihood, not a guarantee, of similar behavior.

How are squads evaluated?

Each squad member contributes to the squad profile. The leader does not receive special weighting, so changing who hosts the group is not a way to force a different matchmaking result. A squad that mixes cautious and aggressive players can therefore produce a profile reflecting the group rather than only the person who starts the queue.

Is there a guaranteed peaceful or PvE-only lobby?

Under the normal matchmaking rules, no. Similar behavior is more likely to be grouped, but there is no permanent promise that a peaceful player will avoid other Raiders. Plan every standard deployment as though a player encounter is possible.

What loot do you lose when you die?

The practical rule is that anything not secured before extraction is at risk if the raid ends in death. Treat every unsecured item as temporary until you have successfully left. The danger applies even when you found the item for a legitimate objective; finding it does not complete the run by itself.

Use the Safe Pocket for high-consequence items

Put eligible quest items, Raider Hatch Keys, and expensive crafting materials in the Safe Pocket as soon as you obtain them. Doing this immediately avoids the common mistake of carrying a critical item through several optional fights or detours after the objective is already complete.

Check eligibility before relying on the pocket: not every item necessarily qualifies. The key habit is to secure an item at the first safe opportunity, then plan the rest of the raid around getting out rather than exposing it to additional danger.

Why a cheap loadout helps while learning

A low-cost loadout limits the consequences of failed experiments. It lets you learn routes, extraction timing, ARC threats, and inventory decisions without putting your most valuable equipment into every lesson. A Free Loadout reduces the cost of entering a run, but it does not convert a failed raid into a successful extraction; you still need to survive and leave with your objective.

How to extract safely as a beginner

Use this sequence for your first runs. It is designed to reduce the number of decisions you must make while carrying valuable items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify an active extraction before opening the first container. Knowing where you can leave prevents a full bag from turning into a last-minute search. Note a backup extraction as well, because the first route may become dangerous or impractical.
  2. Choose one nearby point of interest. Start with a manageable location instead of crossing the map for a marginally better container. Build a return route around cover and visible landmarks so you can retrace it under pressure.
  3. Keep roughly 30% of your inventory capacity open. Reserve space for useful salvage and avoid filling the pack with low-value items before reaching the objective. Weight and stamina pressure make the retreat harder, so empty capacity is part of your escape plan.
  4. Secure the objective as soon as you find it. Move eligible quest items, Raider Hatch Keys, and expensive crafting materials into the Safe Pocket immediately. Do not postpone this step while searching nearby rooms.
  5. Reassess the raid after the objective is complete. Once the required item or workshop material is secured, nearby containers are optional. Compare their possible value with the exposure created by staying longer.
  6. Leave before the route becomes a forced fight. If reinforcements, ARC activity, or another Raider blocks the obvious path, use the backup route or extract with what you already have. Being pinned while overloaded is a common way to turn a successful objective into a failed run.

How should you manage a full backpack?

When capacity becomes tight, sort by purpose rather than by rarity alone. Keep objective items first, then the healing, shields, ammunition, and other supplies that preserve your ability to reach extraction. Drop low-value scrap before you begin a slow retreat if carrying it would reduce mobility or stamina.

The 30% reserve is a planning target, not a promise that every map or loadout will feel identical. Heavy gear, injuries, and a long route can make the same inventory more dangerous on one run than another. If you have no space for a likely objective item, leaving now may be safer than gambling on a distant container.

How to decide whether another container is worth opening

Use four checks before extending a run:

  • Objective value: Will the next area help finish a quest or provide a high-priority workshop material, or is it merely another chance at cheap scrap?
  • Survival margin: Do you have enough healing, shields, ammunition, and stamina to handle an unexpected fight and still reach extraction?
  • Mobility and weight: Can you move through the return route without becoming slow or exhausting your stamina?
  • Loss exposure: If you die in the next room, how much more will be at risk compared with extracting now?

Continue only when the expected objective value clearly outweighs the reduced survival margin. Otherwise, mark the run as successful and leave.

What should you do when another Raider appears?

Normal matchmaking never removes the possibility of player conflict. Decide your response using the same objective-and-extraction test as any other threat. If the encounter does not protect your objective or improve your route, avoiding it can be the better beginner choice. If you are shot at, prioritize cover, a disengagement path, and the nearest viable extraction rather than chasing a low-value fight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that winning an encounter makes the rest of the raid safe. A fight can consume ammunition, healing, shields, time, and stamina, while the noise or delay may attract further danger. If you down someone and take their items, that looting action does not itself alter your matchmaking profile, but it can still leave you overloaded and exposed.

What danger remains from ARC machines?

ARC machines are an independent source of pressure. Even a raid with no player contact can fail if you spend too long in a dangerous area, exhaust your resources, or reach extraction without a viable route. Plan around cover and landmarks, preserve enough stamina for the return, and treat machine activity as a reason to simplify the route rather than as an invitation to collect every nearby item.

What was the October 13–20, 2026 PvE matchmaking test?

The official announcement covered a temporary PvE matchmaking toggle for October 13–20, 2026. During the announced test window, player-to-player damage was removed, solo, duo, and trio players were mixed, and overall PvE loot value was reduced. ARC machines and the pressure to reach an extraction point remained, so the mode was not a risk-free scavenging session.

Because the window is date-bound, check the live in-game or official announcement after October 20 before assuming the toggle still exists or follows the same rules. Do not treat the test as evidence that standard matchmaking has permanent PvE-only queues. Outside an active test or other explicitly announced mode, plan for possible Raider encounters.

Beginner run plans for common situations

You find the quest item immediately

Secure it in the Safe Pocket, confirm the nearest active extraction, and leave unless you have a compelling reason to gather more. The value of a completed objective usually exceeds the value of optional scrap once the item is protected.

Your first extraction is blocked

Do not repeatedly challenge the same approach. Use the backup route identified at the start, move through cover and landmarks, and keep enough stamina for the final leg. If the alternative is also unsafe, abandon optional loot and prioritize survival.

Your pack is full before the objective is complete

Retain survival supplies and any objective-related items, then discard low-value scrap. A clear slot can be more useful than one additional common material because it lets you take the item that completes the run.

You are learning a new area

Use a cheap loadout, choose one nearby point of interest, and repeat the same covered return route until its landmarks are familiar. Add distance only after you can reliably identify an extraction and a backup under pressure.

Quick answers

  • Can matchmaking guarantee peaceful players? No. It groups similar behavior more often, but it never guarantees a peaceful lobby.
  • Does a kill instantly change my matchmaking? No. The profile shifts gradually from behavioral patterns across rounds.
  • What belongs in the Safe Pocket? Prioritize eligible quest items, Raider Hatch Keys, and expensive crafting materials.
  • How much inventory should remain open? About 30% is the beginner guide’s target for salvage and mobility.
  • Is PvE-only mode permanent? No. The announced no-player-damage toggle was a temporary October 13–20, 2026 test; verify the live rules after that window.
