Use augmented reality (AR) when people need digital guidance alongside the real task in front of them. Use virtual reality (VR) when they need to practice, inspect, or experience a simulated environment. The right choice depends on the workflow—not on which technology sounds more advanced.
How AR, VR, and XR differ
AR adds digital information to a view of the physical environment, so a worker can follow instructions while looking at a real machine or site. VR places the user in a simulated environment, which can be useful for rehearsal, design review, or immersive experiences. Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term that includes AR, VR, and mixed reality (MR); Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority describes MR as enabling digital and physical objects to interact in real time (IMDA’s XR overview, updated 28 January 2026).
These are different ways to handle context, not automatic upgrades to a workflow. A phone, tablet, projection, or conventional screen may be a better fit than a headset; the reviewed evidence does not establish a universal winner among those options.
Which business tasks fit AR or VR?
| Task | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repairing or assembling equipment with step-by-step instructions | AR | The worker can keep the real equipment in view while using digital guidance. |
| Remote expert support for industrial work | AR | Guidance can support someone carrying out a task in the physical workspace. Gartner’s public summary describes task guidance and expert support among industrial-aligned AR uses. |
| Practicing a hazardous, rare, or complex procedure | VR candidate | A simulated environment can enable immersive practice. Measure whether it improves the specific training outcome; the examples do not establish that it will. |
| Reviewing a proposed design, site, or factory layout | VR candidate; compare with AR | VR may help people inspect a virtual design. AR may be more appropriate when the review needs to be anchored to a real site. |
| Collaboration | Depends on the work | Consider AR when people are collaborating while doing real-world tasks, and VR when they need a shared simulated space. |
| Marketing, sales, or product visualization | Test the audience and channel | VR can create an immersive customer environment. AR visualization may be worth comparing when customers need to see a product in their own space. |
Bitkom’s 2024 survey of German companies reported AR uses including training, design and planning, remote maintenance, and step-by-step instructions; VR uses included design and planning, training, collaboration, marketing, fairs, and sales. These reported categories help identify plausible starting points, not prove that a technology improves a particular company’s results.

What adoption figures say—and what they do not
In a representative telephone survey of 605 German companies with at least 20 employees, fielded during calendar weeks 2–8 of 2024, Bitkom found that 20% said they already used at least one AR or VR application. Another 36% said they planned or discussed VR use, and 29% said they planned or discussed AR use. These are Germany-specific survey responses from 2024, not global or current adoption rates (Bitkom’s survey results, published 29 May 2024).
Among companies using, planning, or discussing AR, 64% named training or education, 60% design or planning, 22% remote maintenance, and 19% step-by-step instructions. In the corresponding VR group, 74% named design or planning, 61% training or education, and 46% collaboration. The use-case percentages include companies considering or discussing a technology as well as those already using it; they are not success rates or market shares.

How to evaluate an AR or VR pilot
- Choose one workflow and its users. Start with a repeatable task, training challenge, design review, or customer experience—not an abstract goal to adopt XR.
- Set a baseline and a target measure. Depending on the task, track time to completion, error or rework rate, task success, knowledge retention, safety incidents, support calls, or customer conversion. These are possible measures, not outcomes established by the cited sources.
- Decide whether the real environment must remain visible. If people need to see and act on a physical task, investigate AR. If the central need is immersion or simulation, investigate VR. Compare non-headset options where they could meet the same need.
- Check what delivery requires. Assess devices, content creation, application integration, network and infrastructure, privacy, safety, employee participation, support, and total cost. Bitkom’s implementation guide announcement identifies use-case selection, hardware, content, data protection, costs, and success evaluation as topics (Bitkom’s guide announcement, 3 November 2023).
- Test in the real setting with representative users. Check comfort, fit, hygiene, battery runtime, visibility, accessibility, interruptions, device management, and how the workflow handles errors. There is no universal threshold for these checks in the reviewed sources.
- Scale only if the pilot supports the intended outcome. Resolve the practical and organizational barriers before expanding. The European Commission’s 2024 XR study discusses technical, business, legal, social, and ethical challenges across industrial ecosystems (European Commission study: “Zero-distance XR applications and services”, released 17 April 2024).
What to keep in mind about hardware and evidence
Hardware readiness depends on the use case. Gartner’s public abstract says enterprise AR headset adoption is concentrated in training and industrial efficiency, while expense and form factor remain challenges for general-purpose devices (Gartner’s public summary, 23 January 2024). This is a summary of Gartner’s report, not a model-by-model comparison or a purchasing recommendation.
Microsoft’s enterprise scenarios include VR training and simulation, as well as prototyping and manufacturing. That page is previous-version Windows Mixed Reality guidance last updated 16 March 2022, so its examples illustrate possible uses rather than current device availability or platform support (Microsoft Learn’s enterprise use-case guidance).

Bitkom’s survey provides a quantified view of reported interest and use in Germany; Gartner’s cited material is a public abstract, and the European Commission study addresses ecosystem-wide adoption barriers rather than comparing devices. None of these sources establishes a guaranteed return on investment, a universal adoption threshold, a best headset, or categorical superiority for AR or VR.
