Use the next 20 days to turn your full-stack experience into clear, practical AppSec answers: explain a risk, show where it can enter code or configuration, describe a mitigation, and say how you would verify the fix. The plan below combines OWASP guidance with hands-on practice and interview rehearsal. It is a focused preparation proposal, not a guarantee of readiness; tailor it to the job description, your stack, and the interview format.

How to study for an AppSec interview

For each vulnerability or design concern, practice the same five-part response:

  1. Name the issue and its boundaries. Explain what makes the behavior vulnerable and what assumptions affect the risk.
  2. Describe a realistic impact. Connect the weakness to data exposure, account compromise, service disruption, or another consequence relevant to the application.
  3. Locate the cause. Point to the route, data-access layer, authentication flow, rendering path, configuration, or dependency where it could arise in your stack.
  4. Propose a mitigation. Be specific about the code or design change, not just the tool that might detect the problem.
  5. Explain verification. Say how you would test the fix, including an appropriate negative case and any regression checks.

OWASP’s Application Security Curriculum connects awareness through the Top 10 with verification through the Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS) and broader assurance practices through the Software Assurance Maturity Model (SAMM). Use the Top 10 as an awareness map, not as a complete test plan. OWASP Application Security Curriculum

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Days Focus What to do Useful output
1–4 Core web risks Review the OWASP Top 10 and map relevant risks to routes, data access, authentication, rendering, configuration, and dependencies in your stack. Short explanations of key risks, each with a plausible impact and mitigation.
5–9 Secure implementation and code review Study developer-oriented controls and OWASP Proactive Controls. Practice reviewing small pieces of code for access control, input handling, safe data use, secure defaults, identity, and logging. A repeatable code-review explanation: finding, risk, fix, and verification.
10–14 Hands-on practice Work through relevant free, self-paced PortSwigger Web Security Academy labs or another authorized training environment. For each exercise, identify the root cause and explain how you would validate a remediation. A brief account of what failed, why, and how you would retest after a fix.
15–17 AppSec workflow and design Rehearse assessing an application, scanning it, reviewing dependencies, prioritizing findings, implementing fixes, and monitoring continuously. Practice explaining severity and trade-offs to engineering and product peers. A concise security workflow for a feature or application you know.
18–20 Interview rehearsal Use timed code-review and design prompts in your actual language and framework. Answer aloud using risk, exploitability, impact, mitigation, and verification. Clear, structured answers that connect security concepts to your development experience.

These topics draw on OWASP’s Secure Coding Practices Quick Reference Guide, DevSecOps guidance, and application workflow guidance. Treat this schedule as a practical synthesis, not a formal OWASP syllabus.

Choose practice that teaches both discovery and retesting

Reading builds vocabulary, but interview answers become more credible when you can connect a finding to its root cause and explain how a fix would be checked. Compare learning options by authority, hands-on depth, relevance to your stack, access or cost, and whether they help you practice remediation and retesting.

  1. Assess: Understand the application, data, trust boundaries, and relevant threats before choosing checks.
  2. Scan and review: Use suitable testing and code-review methods, while treating tool output as evidence to investigate rather than a complete security verdict.
  3. Review dependencies: Identify relevant dependency risks and determine whether an update or other mitigation is appropriate.
  4. Prioritize and fix: Explain severity in context, including exploitability, impact, and practical trade-offs; then propose a targeted fix.
  5. Monitor: Describe how the team would continue checking for regressions and newly introduced risks.

Keep the distinction between testing and tooling clear. OWASP’s Certified Secure Developer project puts it this way: “Writing secure code != testing the security of code with tools”. OWASP Certified Secure Developer project

Make the plan fit the role

The target employer, seniority, interview format, language, framework, and available study time can change what deserves the most attention. Start with the job description: identify named technologies and responsibilities, then use your own projects to build examples of secure design choices, review findings, fixes, and verification. If a role emphasizes design or team process, spend more rehearsal time on threat-aware decisions and prioritization; if it emphasizes implementation, work through code-review prompts in the relevant stack.
