Approach Mapper is an open-source tool designed to help when a programming, math, or other STEM problem leaves you unsure how to begin. Instead of leading with a finished answer, it surfaces clues, suggests a possible method, lays out a decision path, and offers questions and progressively revealed hints.
What Approach Mapper does
Rahulrr describes building the tool for a friend learning data structures and algorithms (DSA) and math. Its focus is the blank-page moment: you can see the problem, but not the first useful move. As Rahulrr puts it, “They get one thing: a way to start the STEM problem in front of them.”
You can provide a problem by pasting text, uploading a photo or .txt file, or pasting an image from the clipboard. The tool then aims to turn the prompt into a route for thinking rather than simply returning a solution.

- Clues in the problem statement: details that may matter to the solution.
- A suggested pattern or method: examples in the project description include hash maps, two pointers, and invariants.
- A decision-path mind map: a visual structure for considering possible approaches.
- Step-by-step questions: prompts intended to guide your own reasoning.
- A four-level hint ladder: clues revealed progressively, so you can request more help as needed.
The project also says it classifies a problem and declines input it does not recognize as STEM. That framing can help keep the tool focused, but it does not establish that every accepted prompt or generated interpretation will be correct.

How the app is configured
The README describes Approach Mapper as a model-agnostic, MIT-licensed app with a FastAPI backend and a single-page frontend. Its client talks to a chat API that follows the OpenAI-compatible format, with configuration supplied through environment variables. That means the application is not tied to one specific model provider.
For text-only problems, the configured model needs to handle text. For image input, it must also be vision-capable. The README describes using either a local model server or a hosted endpoint, with OpenRouter given as one example of a hosted option.

Local versus hosted use: privacy and practical trade-offs
Where the prompt and image go depends on the endpoint you configure—not on a universal privacy guarantee from Approach Mapper. With a suitable local model and local endpoint, the README says the material stays on your machine. With a hosted endpoint, submitted text and images are sent to that provider. Check the provider’s data-handling terms as well as your app configuration before submitting private coursework or other sensitive material.

Rahulrr says their local run of Gemma took 8–15 minutes per problem on their hardware, so they moved the same model to a cloud GPU instance. That account does not identify the GPU provider or establish how quickly another hosted setup will respond. It illustrates the trade-off: moving inference to a hosted service changes where data is processed and may change performance, but the project materials do not provide a controlled comparison.

What to check before relying on its guidance
Approach Mapper is best treated as a reasoning aid, not a verified tutor or guaranteed-correct solver. Its output is generated by the configured model, and the repository warns that the model can be wrong. Check suggested patterns against the actual constraints and test any proposed reasoning or code independently.
- Photos and handwriting: recognition can suffer when handwriting is difficult to read or image quality is poor.
- Model choice: smaller models may produce weaker maps; image-based prompts require a vision-capable model.
- Output formatting: the repository notes that structured JSON may require a retry.
- Continuity: the app has no history, account system, or multi-page memory, so do not expect it to remember earlier problems or sessions.
If a map seems off, first make the prompt or image clearer, then compare the suggested approach with the problem’s requirements. A generated hint can help you get unstuck, but it is not evidence that the resulting solution is valid.

Who it may suit
The tool’s central use case is a learner who wants help finding a first step without immediately being handed a finished answer. Its progressive hints and guiding questions are aimed at preserving some of the work of solving the problem. It may also appeal to someone who wants to run a model locally or configure a compatible hosted service, provided they are comfortable with setup and the privacy implications of that choice.
It is less suitable as a source of authoritative solutions, a persistent study record, or a substitute for checking the model’s reasoning. Its usefulness depends on the prompt, the configured model, and—in image cases—the quality of the input.
