Application server computing means running application logic on server-side software that manages the application and supplies services it needs to execute. The application server is software, not the physical computer; its capabilities depend on the platform and product.
What is an application server?
An application server hosts application code, manages its deployment and execution, and provides shared runtime capabilities. Depending on the technology, those capabilities can include handling HTTP requests, managing component lifecycles, dependency injection, security, transactions, REST support, and pooled access to databases or other resources.
There is no single cross-industry specification that defines every application server. Jakarta EE offers a standards-based example: a Jakarta EE server implements platform APIs, runs containers for application components, and provides platform services. The Jakarta EE tutorial describes the server as software that runs containers, deploys applications, and provides administration and other features.

Application server software versus the machine it runs on
The application server is a program that runs on a server computer or virtual machine. The machine supplies computing resources; the application server runs application code and coordinates access to runtime services. The terms are related, but they do not mean the same thing.

Do not confuse an application server’s container with an operating-system container such as a Docker or OCI container. In Jakarta EE, a container is part of the application runtime: it executes application components and mediates access to platform services. An operating-system container provides isolation at the operating-system level. A Jakarta EE application can run inside an operating-system container.

Not every server supports every service. Jakarta EE defines profiles with different sets of APIs, and implementations may support a particular profile and version rather than the entire platform. The Jakarta EE Platform 10 specification describes application-client, web, and enterprise-bean containers, while noting that a profile can support only a subset. Check the product’s documented profile and version against the application’s needs.

A web server is centered on handling web protocols and delivering content. An application server supplies an environment for running application logic and related services. The roles can overlap: a Jakarta EE application server may include a web container that runs web components, so the web-server and application-server functions do not always belong to separate products.

In a typical Jakarta EE request flow, a client sends an HTTP request to the web server. The servlet container prepares request and response objects and passes them to a web component, such as a servlet. That component can use application services, beans, or a database to produce a result. The server sends the response back through the container to the client. If you are selecting a runtime for an application, focus on its requirements rather than treating “application server” as one fixed feature set.

- Required platform services: Identify the APIs and runtime features the application uses, then confirm the implementation supports the required Jakarta EE profile and version, if applicable.
- Deployment and administration: Determine how the runtime deploys and manages application components. Jakarta EE requires provider tools for deployment and management, but does not prescribe their form; see the Platform 10 specification.
- Packaging and architecture: Check whether web handling is bundled with application execution, how runtime containers are exposed, and whether the application targets a managed server or an executable application package.
- Operational fit: Evaluate the specific product against your application’s runtime and operational requirements. The category name alone does not establish performance or suitability.
