Application performance management (APM) is the practice of using software, telemetry and operational processes to monitor, diagnose and improve an application’s performance, availability and user experience. Application performance monitoring is one part of APM—not the whole discipline.
What application performance management means
APM combines tools and day-to-day operational work to help teams understand how an application behaves and respond when it is slow, unreliable or failing. It is broader than a dashboard, a single measurement or a check that a server is online. IBM distinguishes monitoring from the wider management practice, while Microsoft’s Azure Well-Architected glossary describes APM in terms of monitoring performance, availability and user experience.
In practice, teams instrument an application and its supporting services, gather telemetry, examine the experience of users and requests, and use that evidence to find and address problems. Google Cloud describes APM as observing and managing application operational health with software and telemetry; AWS includes distributed tracing in its description of application monitoring.
What APM monitors
APM commonly brings together several kinds of evidence. Their value comes from looking at related signals together: a slow request, for example, may have a corresponding trace, error and set of log events. Product capabilities differ, so no single signal set should be assumed for every APM tool.

- Metrics: Numerical measures such as response time, throughput, error rate and resource use. They help reveal trends and changes in service behavior.
- Logs: Time-stamped records of application or system events, useful for reconstructing what happened during an incident.
- Traces: Records of a request’s journey through services and components. They can show where time is spent or where an error occurs in a distributed application.
- Errors and exceptions: Captured failures and diagnostic details that can help teams identify recurring issues or problems introduced by a change.
- User and infrastructure views: Measures of real user experience considered alongside servers, containers, databases and backend services.
These signal types complement one another. A metric can show that response times worsened; a trace may point to a slow dependency, while logs or error details provide context about what occurred.
How teams use APM to find and fix problems
APM helps connect a user-visible symptom to evidence about its likely cause. If a page or transaction is slow, a team can inspect the request’s trace to see which service consumed time and consult associated logs or errors. This can help application, operations, DevOps and reliability teams troubleshoot incidents, understand capacity needs and assess whether service expectations are being met.
- Instrument the application and relevant services. Collect information about the application’s behavior and the components a request depends on.
- Gather telemetry. Capture useful metrics, logs, traces and error data. The exact signals available depend on the implementation and tools.
- Relate the evidence to an affected request or experience. Correlating signals can narrow the investigation from “the service is slow” to a particular operation, component or dependency.
- Identify a likely bottleneck or failure. Use the combined evidence to guide diagnosis rather than treating one measurement as the whole explanation.
- Make a corrective change and evaluate it. Check whether the change improves the behavior that prompted the investigation and whether service expectations are being met.
APM can also support infrastructure planning and tracking service-level objectives, as AWS describes. It provides evidence for operational decisions; it does not by itself guarantee that a service will meet its targets.

APM versus application performance monitoring
The terms are closely related, but “management” has the wider scope. Application performance monitoring refers to observing application behavior and collecting information about performance. Application performance management includes that monitoring, plus using the information to diagnose issues and improve performance, availability and user experience. IBM explicitly describes monitoring as one component of holistic APM.
So, a monitoring view may reveal a rise in errors or latency; the broader management practice includes investigating why it happened, deciding what to change and checking the result.
APM and observability
APM and observability overlap, but the terms are not universally interchangeable. Microsoft describes observability as a practice for detecting issues, tracking performance trends and making operational decisions. Its telemetry can include logs, metrics, traces and events. APM focuses specifically on application performance, availability and user experience; APM instrumentation and telemetry can contribute to a broader observability practice.

Terminology varies across vendors and organizations. It is more useful to ask what an implementation lets a team observe and investigate than to assume that every product draws the APM–observability boundary in the same way.

Teams often use a combination of measures rather than relying on one indicator:
- Response time or latency: How long an application or transaction takes to respond.
- Throughput: How much work the application handles over time.
- Error rate: How frequently requests or operations fail.
- Resource utilization: How much of the available computing capacity is being used.
- Integrity and user experience: Whether transactions behave correctly and how the service performs from the user’s perspective.
Which measures matter most depends on the application and the service expectations the organization sets. A fast response that returns an error is not a good user outcome, so teams need to interpret performance measures alongside errors and correctness.

What to consider when evaluating APM tools
There is no evidence here for a universal best platform or a product ranking. For a specific organization, useful evaluation questions include:
- Technology fit: Does the tool support the languages, runtimes and application stack in use?
- Signal coverage: Can the team examine application behavior and user experience along with relevant infrastructure?
- Cross-signal diagnosis: Can metrics, traces, logs and error details be related to the same issue or transaction?
- Distributed-system visibility: Can a request be followed across services and dependencies?
These criteria focus evaluation on whether a tool supports the team’s actual diagnostic work rather than on a feature label alone. For examples of how platforms describe their capabilities, see Google Cloud’s APM documentation, AWS’s application performance monitoring overview, Elastic’s APM documentation and Oracle’s Application Performance Monitoring documentation.
