Good application logs answer specific operational and security questions without collecting data the team does not need. Build them around useful events and consistent context, keep secrets and unsafe input out, then verify that records are collected, protected, reviewed, and disposed of according to policy.
What should application logs help you answer?
Start with the decisions an operator, responder, or investigator may need to make: What happened? Which service handled it? Who or what initiated it? What target was involved, and did the action succeed? Application code can often record identity, roles, permissions, and event context that infrastructure logs cannot see. That makes application logging useful for both operations and security, not just debugging. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet describes this application-level advantage.
Choose events deliberately. Log records that help explain behavior, investigate failures, or identify security-relevant activity; do not treat every request or available data point as something that must be retained. OWASP’s compact framework for deciding event context is when, where, who, and what.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- When: the event timestamp, with enough precision and consistent time handling for your systems.
- Where: the application, service, component, or environment that produced the record.
- Who: the relevant actor or system identity, when needed and appropriate to record.
- What: the action, affected target, and outcome.
Depending on the event, an interaction identifier can help connect related records. Define a purpose for each field: an identifier or address can still be sensitive, and its presence should be justified by the work the log must support.

Include security events on purpose
Do not assume security-relevant activity will be recoverable from generic debug messages. OWASP’s Developer Guide gives examples such as out-of-range submitted data, apparent tampering, and requests that violate server-side access-control rules. These are examples to adapt to your application’s risks, not a universal list. Record enough context to investigate the event while avoiding unnecessary copies of submitted content or secrets. See OWASP’s guidance on security logging and monitoring.
How should you structure application logs?
Use structured records with stable field names and consistent meanings across the application or service portfolio. A machine-readable record lets downstream tools handle fields separately—for example, to filter an event or redact a particular value—rather than treating the entire message as undifferentiated text. OpenTelemetry’s .NET guidance discusses these advantages for .NET; the exact implementation depends on your language and logging stack. Read the .NET Logs Best Practices.

Agree on a small shared vocabulary for common fields such as timestamp, service identity, event name, actor, target, outcome, and interaction identifier. Keep meanings stable: if a field means the initiating user in one service and the affected user in another, cross-service analysis becomes ambiguous. Add event-specific fields where they answer a real question, rather than expanding the schema indiscriminately.

Connect logs to traces where useful
Logs and traces serve different purposes, but correlation can help a responder move from an event record to the execution path behind it. OpenTelemetry identifies three useful correlation dimensions:

- Time: timestamps help locate records near the same event, subject to clock consistency and the available precision.
- Execution context: trace and span identifiers can associate a log record with the relevant request or operation.
- Resource context: service and other resource attributes identify the component that emitted the record.
These links help connect records to traces and participating components; they do not make a log a substitute for a trace. For new applications, OpenTelemetry describes using existing logging libraries with supported OpenTelemetry appenders or instrumentation, or using the Logs API for structured records. Choose the integration that fits the language and existing stack; there is no universally best implementation. OpenTelemetry’s logging documentation explains the correlation dimensions and integration options.
How do you avoid logging sensitive data or unsafe input?
Logs can expose personal information, credentials, system details, or business data. Exclude or mask sensitive fields as close as possible to the point where the application creates the record. OWASP specifically warns against recording passwords and unnecessary session identifiers. Do not put credentials, access tokens, or full personal records into illustrative examples or production logs.

Treat values supplied by clients or other external sources as untrusted. Validate or safely encode them for the log format so unexpected control characters cannot forge misleading records or disrupt parsing. Also ensure log viewers render untrusted values as data rather than interpreting them as executable content. OWASP’s security logging and monitoring guidance covers both sensitive information and unsafe input.
For fields such as user identifiers or IP addresses, decide whether they are needed for a defined operational or security purpose, who may access them, and how long they should remain available. A field is not harmless merely because it is structured.

How do you keep logging dependable and protected?
Logging is part of the application’s operating system, not a feature to configure once and forget. Confirm that records reach the expected collection and review systems, and establish a way to detect when logging stops. OWASP also calls for identifying tampering, unauthorized access, and deletion. Protect records in transit and at rest, restrict access to people and services with a legitimate need, and review those permissions.
Make relevant information available to monitoring and incident-response workflows. Decide which serious events warrant alerts and who is expected to act on them; an alert without an owner or response path is not an effective control. Periodically verify that collection, parsing, access restrictions, and alert routing still work after application or infrastructure changes.
How long should logs be retained?
Set retention according to the operational purpose and applicable legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements; there is no universal duration that fits every system. OWASP advises against destroying logs or copies before the required retention period and against keeping them beyond it. Document the applicable period for each log category, control copies as well as the primary store, and define how records are securely disposed of when retention ends. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet discusses retention and disposal.

Quick Recap
A practical review checklist
- Can each important operational or security event answer a clear question?
- Does the record carry the necessary time, source, actor, action, target, and outcome context?
- Are shared field names and meanings consistent across services?
- Can logs be connected to relevant traces and resource identities where useful?
- Are passwords, tokens, and unnecessary sensitive data excluded or masked?
- Are untrusted values handled so they cannot forge records or execute in viewers?
- Can the team detect missing logs, tampering, unauthorized access, or deletion?
- Are access, alerting, retention, and disposal responsibilities explicit?
