An application layer gateway (ALG) is a protocol-aware function, usually associated with a NAT device or firewall, that helps certain application traffic pass between networks. It recognizes information inside a protocol’s messages—such as an address or port—and may rewrite that information or coordinate the additional connection state the application needs.

What an application layer gateway means

In the common networking usage, an ALG is an application-specific translation agent that assists traffic crossing a network address translator (NAT). Basic NAT changes addresses in network-layer packets. Some applications also put address or port details inside their messages; changing only the packet headers may therefore leave the application with unusable connection information. An ALG understands selected protocol content and can handle those details alongside NAT.

The name is not used in only one narrow way. In NAT discussions, “ALG” usually means this protocol-specific helper. More broadly, an “application-level gateway” can mean a system that mediates or translates between application protocols. The intended meaning depends on context. RFC 2663 defines the NAT terminology, while RFC 3234 describes the wider range of gateway behavior.

What an ALG does on a NAT or firewall

An ALG examines traffic for a protocol it supports. If it finds application-layer information that must match the network’s translated addresses or connection state, it may rewrite that information and coordinate with NAT or the firewall. Some implementations can also arrange for related traffic to be admitted through dynamically selected ports. The exact behavior depends on the protocol and device implementation; not every ALG performs every operation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

FTP illustrates why this can be useful. Its control channel can identify the address and port for a separate data connection. An FTP ALG may adjust the control message for the translated network and coordinate the corresponding NAT mapping, allowing the data session to be established. RFC 2663 discusses this application-specific translation role.

Examples: FTP and VoIP

FTP

Because FTP can communicate information about a separate data flow over its control connection, a NAT device may need protocol-specific help to make both connections work across address realms. An FTP ALG can interpret that control information and coordinate the related translation.

SIP and H.323 for voice calls

Voice-over-IP signaling can include address and port information used to set up call media. NIST’s 2005 SP 800-58 describes VoIP ALGs parsing SIP or H.323 and configuring the address and ports needed for call traffic. Cisco also documents SIP ALG behavior that can include payload NAT and dynamic media-port pinholes; that is an example of an implementation, not a guarantee for every router, firewall, or deployment. Cisco’s SIP ALG guidance is specific to its documented products and software release.

How an ALG differs from a proxy

In the NAT terminology of RFC 2663, an ALG handles a supported application protocol as part of translation without requiring a special protocol between the application client and the gateway or changes to that client. A proxy, by contrast, communicates with proxy clients using a proxy-specific mechanism and relays data. The two can both sit between applications and destinations, but they are not interchangeable terms.

When an ALG helps—and why it can cause problems

An ALG can help when an application embeds connection details in its messages that ordinary NAT or firewall handling cannot reconcile. Its usefulness depends on the gateway recognizing and correctly processing the particular protocol. Protocol encoding can make that difficult or even impractical, as discussed in RFC 3235.

The same payload changes that restore connectivity can also conflict with a protocol’s own NAT-traversal method or with traffic the ALG does not correctly interpret. RFC 5382 recommends that NATs disable TCP-affecting ALGs by default, except FTP, because such ALGs can interfere with NAT-aware methods. This is a standards recommendation, not a universal setting instruction for every current router or network.

Should you enable or disable an ALG?

There is no reliable one-setting answer for every network. If a particular application fails across NAT, an ALG for that protocol may be relevant; if it is already using a NAT-traversal method, the ALG may instead interfere. Check the application vendor’s guidance and test the actual device, firmware, and network path. Standards describe general behavior and recommendations, not the correct configuration for every router model.

When comparing implementations for a troubleshooting or design decision, check which protocols are supported, what traffic the function can inspect or alter, how it interacts with NAT and firewall state, and whether it can be configured or disabled per protocol. Also consider whether the traffic’s encryption or NAT-traversal behavior limits what the ALG can interpret.
